Both. I ahve Ws that I use for edu. classes tht only accept live, and I feed f/t and prekilled fro my cb or WCs that accept them for saftey reasons.

I feed f/t, and will start feeding live soon. The only frozen mice I can get around here are of horrid quality, but I take care of the feeders where I work..so..its a trade off. However, there is no way I am just throwing the mouse or rat in and leaving. Live feeding is fine IF you do it right.

Frozen thawed. My snakes have been brought up to take them from tiny babies - two of them I hatched and brought up myself - plus feeding live is frowned on in the UK (and safety reasons as above).

I feed both because I have a few snakes that go off feed occassionally and feeding a live pink seems to help get them interested in eating again.

I feed my baby corns frozen/thawed. My sub-adult corn was fed live all it’s life, but trying to give it f/t. It ate 2 live fuzzies when I first brought her home. It’s been about 2 or 3 weeks and still no success on feeding her frozen :/ And my Brazilian Rainbow Boa was raised on live pinkies, but now I have her and I got her to eat 1 f/t pinkie.... now to get her to fuzzies. She bites them, constricts them, and ignores them lol. But I prefer F/T over live because of less worrying on my part.

Live can never be fully safe. I ahd a rescue ball python once. It was rarley fed. And it would only accpet live. THE first mouse it had, it went in to fast, and when it bit, it left the mouses head exposed. THE mouse out of fear, bit a nice chunk out of the sanke. THE mouse was fully gutoladed, had plenty of water, and was supervised 100% btu the way the sanke bit it left it open to attack.

Jeica,
I feed only live to my RTB. The way I keep him (and me) safe is by doing and having the following: we feed in a large steralite container (NEVER in his cage) We always have gloves and a hook ready (in case the rat bites or something similar happens) We made sure our Vet knows that we feed live and have his emergency phone #, We also keep peroxide and triple antibiotic ointment on hand. If the rat seems overly aggressive we stun it (My fiance does it but basically he puts in a box and shakes it a few times to daze it so it is not so aggressive) and last but not least NEVER EVER LEAVE YOUR SNAKE ALONE! You should be watching him from the time he is in the feeding cage till the time you put him back into his regular cage. Also just for precautionary measure we always drop the rat/mouse in behind the snake b/c Sully strikes almost as soon as he sees it.

thank u water,
I’m printing this and taking it home so i can keep researching, cause I’m still not sure on what I’m going to feed. See my husband is really big on not babying kids or animals so he wanted to feed live, but I’m a girl after all so is in my nature to baby kids and animals so i still have to think about it. And that is why i started this poll so thank you guys 4 all the info..

TIs ont really babying. Prekilled is safer hands down, no questions asked. Live always has some sort of risk.

Reptilover is right about there always being a risk when feeding live. If you do decide to feed live........ I hide like a big baby I can’t stand to watch my fiance always feeds Sully. I even have a pet mouse.....so it is OK to be a girlie girl just hide like I do at feeding time ..... actually I usually go shopping

Hey i read somewhere can’t remember where now but anyways, that u can kill the mouse with dry ice, i guess putting the dry ice in the bucket and then placing the mouse in it does anyone know if this really works.

It does but I think it is even more cruel to do that then feed it alive. It just freezes the mouse/rat same as if you put them in a plastic bag and stuck it in the freezer it just happens faster.

Well, the thing about dry ice is that it is frozen carbon dioxide, which should put the mouse to sleep and slowly poison it to death.

I don’t know whether or not a mouse killed in this way would be safe to feed to your snake.

I would recommend consulting a vet or expert before using this method. I would definitely consult someone who has done it before. Dry ice can be very dangerous.

The best way to do ti with dry ice is. Take a large ziplock container, fill it halfway full of hot water. THen take a smaller container and punch a few holes in it. Put the mouse in the smaller container, put the top on it. THen put the dry cie in the water and close the other lid. Its baically a gas cahmber. TO kill mice I usually give them a nice hard wack and it kills them instantly. But you can always order frozen mice in bulk cheaper than buying live.

We did breed our own but my asthma went crazy now we buy them from a pet store (we go in about every day and they breed their own mice/rats) and they give us dicounts for buying there all the time.
Well to stun them we just put them in the card board box they come in and shake it really hard once or twice if you want to kill it you can just shake it more (but I would prefer to just snap its neck or something less painful for the animal) I have heard of people putting it in a pillow case or bag and hitting it on the wall but that would get kinda messy.

Yeah it seems to work the best to stun them. So you are going to keep feeding live then? Sully won’t eat F/T he was raised on live and has been bit like 3 times just tiny bits that some peroxide and antibiotic cream fixed. The first time we gave him a rat we stunned it and he just looked at it for a while like OK what am I supposed to do with this. Then he finally figured it out when it started twitching. Now he gets them live (not stunned) and he is one happy camper that hasn’t missed 1 meal since we got him!

If it will take pre-killed that is best. Sully won’t so we give him what he wants. The people on this site have and will damn me to hell for feeding live but oh well I take every precaution I can to see that my snake is not harmed. As for the mouse/rat I feel bad really I make sure it has some treats and is comfy if it isn’t eatin right away. I have a pet mouse and have had pet rats sometimes you just do what you have to even if others dont’ agree.

So what type of snake are you leaning toward? Oh wait lemme guess a corn snake right? I forgot which forum I was in for a sec!

THe pillow case isnt messey. I usually smack them against a brick or toss them on the floor. I recently fed hampsters and used the pillow case method, worked ffine no problems.

oooo very nice snake! I love my RTB and wouldn’t trade him for the world but my very 1st snake was an albino corn snake named Cornelius. My mom wouldn’t let my keep him when my ex-fiance and I broke up.
