 Can corn snakes drink milk??

I have heard that corn snakes(rat snakes) can drink milk and that it is a treat for them. Is is safe, I would guess it would be healthy since milk has calcium and vit.d which it two things reptiles need.

it is obvious... i know i might get a complaint "why are u comparing this to the wild" but w.e ill say wat i have to. they are wild animals...made for the wild and their bodies are programmed to live and survive in the wild. in the wild snakes dont find a puddle of milk....they find water
i forgot who said this before but it is true they can not digest dairy.
and no its not good just because it has a lot of calcium. snakes get all the calcium they need in their food. they get...meat and bone wich contains a lot of calcium...and other nutritions

They cannot digest dairy
Milk is a food source fro mammles, reptiels are born fending for themselves(in most cases) or are soon after. Feeding on whole foods form the get go. Milk is fed by mothers to supplement their babies growth and development. Reptile babies are born form the get go just as well armed as adults, eveything fully mature (next to the reproductive system) not needing any more noursihment then adults.
bottom line is THEY CANNOT DIGEST DAIRY DO NOT TRY IT

That was a very immature response Draco. Iím not a herpetologist but I have common sense. If you want go ahead use milk for your animal, I wasnít trying to force you not to. I was simply informing you about it and did not care for your response. Donít post questions if you plan to act like this.

ok, i just dont see why so many people, even my teacher, say snakes love milk and that they like it as a treat. This whole thing started when we read this sherlock holmes story about a guy who killed his daughter with a snake( a swamp adder) and used milk to train it,which the snake loved in the story, and the person who wrote the story based it on true facts and stories from scottland.

Draco...everyone on here says no and I agree. What other people are telling you this? Everyone on here seems to disagree with all those so called people. If you donít believe everyone on here, then go do some research on the net or the library. That way, you could be informed by your ownself...and you could learn something new. :)

Milk is VERY nutritious for sankes. Makes them grow SUPER big. Give it a try. All my snakes loved it!

I would assume you mean cows milk?

Most MAMMAL cannot process cows milk, including most people. It stimulates mucus build up in the digestive tract, and contains a substance that is basically glue. The only thing that can break down the milk protines are baby cows, and a very, very small percentage of people. You snake cannot digest these protines, and the milk will do nothing but clog up his digestive system and give him a major stomach ache.

And can you imagine what the feces would smell like?

Well I think theres a higher percentage of people who can digest milk. Its jsut people who canít create the lactase enzyme get sick from milk. I lack this enzyme so I get sick from cow milk. As for the smell yeah it would probably be terrible.

just been to a website call 4to40. I put in your question and a herp had some info on it. It is only a myth that snakes milk. People have turned up at the zoo where he works with milk for his snakes, it ended up in the rest of the staffs coffee. He said for a snake to drink milk would be like a tiger drinking orange juice.

I agree that snakes donít drink milk, but I know the story you are thinking of - "The Speckled Band" - isnít that right? Itís his stepdaughter he kills so that she canít inherit his money for her upcoming marriage. Fantastic story. Itís true he lures the snake back through the ventilator from her room into his using a low whistle and milk, but Arthur Conan Doyle, the author, evidently knew nothing about snakes! The author was a country doctor in Scotland in the 19th century and an amateur detective, making his stories up about characters he met, but they werenít based on truth - they were invented.
