I personally love cricket keepers. I don’t put anything in the bottom (they are usually there for only a week or so) I put a piece of potato in for food, however I am now feeding them cricket food to supplement them properly.

Well all depending on the amount of crickets you will be keeping. I use nothing on the bottom of my rubbermaid tank and it works good and easy to clean.

When I started, i also needed very few crickets.

I used a small critter keeper which is like the cricket keepers without the built in tubing. i used no substrate because it is easier to tell the condition of the container, and makes it much easier to clean. I used toilet paper cardboard rolls for cricket hides, often rubber banding them together to prevent rolling around. I used tropical fish flakes as cricket food and flukers calcium enhanced water gel for hydration.

This worked great for me and my crickets thrived.

I tried both oatmeal and ’cream of wheat’ at one point to see if i could use what i already had on hand, but i found that i lost several crickets in those batches, so i returned to the fish flakes.

I now breed my own crickets in large rubber maid tubs also with no substrate. So you could say my cricket keeping setup has gotten more complex.

general rule to keep in mind is 100 crickets per 10 gallons. So if you have less than that a smaller container should be fine. What I use in the bottom of mine is paper towels.. makes for an easy clean up. We use sterilite containers 58 qt. from Wal-Mart, but then again, we breed crickets and usually have a lot on hand. The only time that you will need soil or sand is if you are planning to breed.
