 New hybrid cricket species!

Well what started out as a simple experiment to raise better feeder insects has dramatically morphed, how add 3 male grasshoppers to a colony of 12 "feeder" crickets and the female after mating laying eggs which hatched into a cricket/grasshopper cross. These hybrids which I am calling Grakets for the time being until I can find a better name are a little larger than your average adult cricket, they have the grasshopper abdomen and legs, are without wings, the downfall they seem to be a tad aggressive actually chasing people when they manage to escape. Anybody have any of these little critters or am I the only one? I’ll post pictures later.

That’s impossible, crickets have 14 chromosomes while grasshoppers have 23, to cross these two species would be scientifically impossible, you probably just have baby grasshoppers that havn’t developed wings.

This is indeed highly possible.

I personally cross bread crickets in the 1970’s. I’m sure that you have heard of the Emu. The Emu is a sterile cross breed much like the donkey. It is the result of cross breeding the Mediterranean gilded chicken with the house cricket.

I was awarded the "better homes and gardens" man of the year award in 1935 due to my Emu breeding research. Unfortunately even to this day, the Emu still retains some observable characteristics from its cricket ancestry. For instance, Its short wings and long legs, which makes it somewhat unwieldy to domesticate.

Holy crap you must be almost 100!

It really isn’t that possible being that crickets have 22 chromosomes, and grasshoppers 24. And the emu is not sterile, nor is it a cross breed. It is its own species just like an ostrich is.

As for the crickets...Maybey they were being sarcastic too? Or mabey they just had some mutant crickets in there.

It’s far more likely that Torch is just a kid who wanted to goof us, like the people in the exotic animals forum who say they have tigers when they clearly don’t. And being that Torch hasn’t replied, that’s is confirmation enough.

It is true !! I have one of these amazing creatures in my possesion I caught it last night there are several grasshoppers and crickets in the area .this is the only hybrid i have found so far. I plan on taking it to the Arizona State University for obsevation and an answer to the question. can they mate?
