The only reason why they smell is probably you didn’t maintain the cage, you alway want to clean out the cage maybe once a month and empty out the left over vegetable the next day, if the vegetable began to get moldy or dry up.

And also alway keep the cage dry and the only source of water is a wet sponge or cotton ball for the crix to drink. The cage tend to grow fungus and get moldy if the cage is wet and that may contribute to the bad smell.

I don’t mind the noise, sounds like we are camping lol! Mine never smell, but they used to. The trick is to keep the enclosure very dry and ventilated. I never use cotton balls or anything, just fresh veggies. I have a very low die-off rate, but remove the bodies when that happens. I also remove all the excess old veggies at least every other day. I also clean it out about once a month.
