Well, technically mealworms don’t breed, they are just larvae....

However if you keep mealworms alive in some oatmeal, or oatbran, or such, they will eventually mature into beetles. Keep enough of them together and they will breed, and lay eggs, which will hatch into more mealworms....

It’s really simpler to just buy mealworms unless they are hard to find in your area for some reason.. most tackle shops or ’bait stores’ carry mealworms year round in my area....

It takes awhile, but it is soooo simple it is worth it for me!

I got a three-drawer plastic thing from WalMart, filled the drawers up with oatmeal and bran flakes. You can also get chicken mash from the feed store, it’s supposed to be good. Then I bought a tub of mealies, and put them in the top drawer. I put in fresh potato slices (skin side down) and carrot slices in there every few days for moisture.

After a few weeks, they start to turn into pupae. I put these in the second drawer, as the mealies can be canabalistic. After two weeks, the pupae turn into beetles which I put in the third drawer. Make sure to crack the third drawer open a bit, as the beetles need air circulation - don’t worry, they won’t escape!

Now comes the wait. It will take several months for you to start seeing baby mealies at the bottom. At this point, put the adult beetles into a different drawer and start again.

Tips: keep all stages seperated, they are canabalistic. Put fresh potato and carrot slices in all stages for moisture, but potatoes must be skin side down to avoid mold.

Hope this helps! Takes a while, but is no trouble. Also, my cwd’s will eat all stages, so it is great for me!
