The Precise and Practical Guide to Breeding the Black Cricket, by Ladybird :)

Here it is folks! I’ve made this guide to all you people who want to breed the black cricket Gryllus bimaculatus
The guide can be adapted for the other cricket species, by changing a few things. I’ll only put that information in if there is a high demand for it.

Please tell me what you think!

I read that before but i think most people on here have the other type of crickets. Well either way it’s a really good guide because i think it pretty much works for all types.

Great job ;) i really like it and find it very useful, i really like ur idea for the water dispenser

Thanks! Yes it will work for the other types of crickets too, the only difference being space requirement and amount of eggs etc... but the setup will work for brown crickets anyway!

If people want more info on the other species I’ll add it, but the basic setup and how to breed them is basically the same. Just development times and number of eggs is all that’s different really!

Most of it looks good to me; I was going to suggest the plastic bins, but I saw you added it. Ventilation is definitely necessary so you might want to cut a square out of the lid and hot glue in a piece of screen. That or poke holes in the top with a hot screwdriver. Drills don’t work so well I found, lol.

I have issues with the paper towels tho, especially moist ones. I have found that moisture and humidity causes them to STINK! I keep the bottom of the tubs dry and clean! I don’t even see the need for the water dish - just another wet paper towel and potential for leaks. I prefer to give fresh chopped up veggies, like carrots, potatoes, brocolli and celery for moisture. I have been doing this for years, and have a verrrry low mortality rate.

I never give fruit either - tends to attract gnats or fruitflies. You can also use bran flakes and baby cereal which is fortified with vitamins.

Other than that, you have done an excellent job!
