The first time I tried to breed crickets was about 6 months ago, it took about 2 weeks before they hatch.(Bought 30 adults crickets and let them breed for a week before I took out the egg’s container) The result was that it yield over a couple of hundreds pinhead, however after a few weeks I discovered the tank where I had rear the pinheads was cover in ants, the ants had killed and carried all the pinhead away. Next time I will take precaution by using talcum powder. Once the ants come in contact with the talcum powder, their feet cannot climb up and into the tank. The following diagram is the first breeding setup I used:
Left portion is the top view. The rectangular egg’s container is filled with the backyard garden soil and placed inside a round clear plastic container, the empty space between the egg and round container is filled with moist tissue paper. The right portion of this diagram is the side view, I put a lid on the round container to retain moist and heat. I poke holes on the lid so that air can circulate and prevent mold from growing. Heat is provided by a 60 Watt incandescence light bulb. I also wrap aluminum foil around the lamb to the round container for maximum heat efficiency, but for the diagram purpose, you can’t see that. Second breeding setup is easier in general. First time it failed to yield any pinhead because I didn’t uses any heating element to keep the egg’s substrate warm and also at time, the substrate was pretty dried up. I tried it again and just today after almost 3 weeks from observing the female crickets laying eggs to when pinheads starting to emerge. I started seeing pinheads starting to appear. This time I use a 60 Watt ceramic bulb and a thermostat to maintain the desire temperature . I’m excited to see all of them hatch in the next few day or so. Below is the second breeding technique I used:
Left portion is the top view. The rectangular egg’s container is filled coconut fiber substrate and placed inside a larger container. Right portion of this picture is the side view. I didn’t use a top lid nor aluminum foil because the thermostat combine with the ceramic bulb emit more heat and was perfect for warming the substrate. |

Quote: how far is your lamp away from the eggs?
Since I use a thermostat it automatically adjust to the pre set temperature so it doesn’t matter as far as height and adjustment. If you don’t have a thermostat then you’re just going to have to play around with the adjustment until the temperature become stable at what ever degree you want. Quote: do u have the light on constantly?
Yes but since I’m using a on/off thermostat, it will turn off once it reaches the right temperature and turn back on once the temperature fall a couple of degree. |
