 Keeping crickets questions?

I am going to go buy a couple dozen little crickets today and planned to house them int he Planet Frog" enclosure that our toad was gievn to us in. The conatiner IMO is inhumane for a toad, but should work OK for crickets... can I do that?

What should I put in there to keep them healthy until their time comes?

Nevermind on Pmanet frog, I forgot I had a large critter keeper. I lined it with papertowels, added in an egg carton, 2 small plastic dishes and hopefully will find some water gel. I hope this works.

You don’t need the water gel - you get a higher die off anyway. Use a piece of potato and/or carrot. Don’t use the paper towel, just another thing to get yucky.

Feed your crickets well!
Give them fresh veggies and fruits dusted with vitamins and some calcium too as you would do if you were feeding your animal!
Dried fish food once in a while, cat and or small dry dog food too are good source of protine too for the crickets!
Remember...what you feed your crickets...FEEDS your animal too, so FEED the crickets well!
You can also mist the cage a bit every day to give them water and YES you can leave fresh water gel in a small flat container too as you do the foods!
Also take out veggies and fruits daily and change to fresh!
I keep crickets in bark substrate in my basement in an old 30 gallon aquarium!
They have babies in NO time.....NO need to buy more after a few months then, you are GROWING your own!!!
Good luck!
Feed your baby well!

Misting them gives them a moist environment, which will begin to STINK - I guess that is not a problem if they are down in the basement, lol. Mine are in my living room, so that would be a problem.

If you feed them calcium, be sure to only do so a few days before feeding them to your pet. Feeding calcium can cause the exoskeleton to harden. Crx can’t moult and you will have a higher die off rate.

that is my cricket container. i used the bag in an emergency i normally use a mike’s hard lemonade box. hehe. i made it for like 10 bucks if that and have maybe 2 crickets die a week if any. i house up to 500 medium or 350 large at any time. i feed them cricket food, wellness cat food, a veggie blend of endive, dandelion greens, parsley, kale, mustard greens, watercress, etc. and they get water pillows. my crickets can grow and live in there until needed. i find crickets live longer when they have aeration and aren’t sitting on carcasses and smelling death.

YES mine ARE in the basement away from the rest of the house!
In a very TALL LARGE Glass hex aquarium!
I don’t mist all the time and they are in about 4 inches of wood bark substrait!
They also have their own dish of fresh water daily when I change their food and veggies!
Calcium should be given to them maybe 2 times weekly.........TRUE! (Again)
I was writing this fast so people who have NEVER raised them could get started!
They also have plants to crawl on and hide in too! (fake one) Easy to remove and clean!
Along with egg carton pieces and tissue paper rolls to crawl and hide in too! And some rocks!
I treat them as my other animals....WELL!
They are after all going to feed my babies soon!!! :)
My cage for them don’t stink! And it has a glass top too! (the back is screaned in for air circ!)
Just a uvb/uva long light on top!

Manderzratz your set up looks good. I am not sure why you have those climbing areas on the sides? when they get quite large, that might enable them to escape? Also, water pillow are totally unncessesary when you are giving fresh greens.

T.Lynn - why do you have the uv lighting for them? How long have you been keeping crx btw? I have been doing so for less than two years now, and never put lights on them, but I never keep them in the dark either. Most ppl comment on why my crx are so much larger than theirs and my die-off is almost nil.

to aerate the sides and i have mediums and larges in it now. they don’t escape and they’re always on the top of the sides. i love handling inverts and insects and all so i’m quite good at handling/catching them. i know the veggie juice can hydrate them but i like to give them the option.
