 New to Cricket Keeping

This week I decided to get a small critter keeper to put the crickets in (it was the same size as a cricketkeeper, but half the price and has the same general use). I have 3 lizards, two use to eat mealworms, one I bought the crickets for and simply bought a few every other day to dump in and watch the devourthon. Recently my other two geckos have decided they, too, want only crickets. And unlike with my arboreal geckos, I can’t just leave crix in the tank with my leopard gecko. So that’s my reason behind getting into crickets more.

In the cricket keeper I put 30 large crickets, the egg carton stuff they came with, a toiletpaper tube to take them out with, oats, cricket vitamins, lettus, and baby carrots. Fed a few and the next day I found two dead crickets. I assumed that they were crushed under the babycarrots cause I sorta rolled the cage a little too hard when I pulled it out. Shrugged it off, pulled hte dead crickets out, and resumed.

Day after this they completely devoured hte lettus and most of the carrots. And the cat knocked the critter keeper over so a few others had died. Relocated the keeper and threw in a piece of apple to keep them hydrated.

Funny enough, the apple was the most deadly thing I could’ve done to the crickets. Even in pieces, it rolled around and crushed crickets. It also went bad really fast. My lesson? No more apples.

Yesterday I fed the last 2 crickets to the lizards and dumped 10 to 15 dead crickets out. This saying, I lost more dimes out of this than I should have.

For the future: no more apples, no more egg carton pieces, if I use babycarrots, I gotta cut them up better.

Now my questions to you guys:

Should I purchase anything (hopefully cheap) or keep something in there for the crickets that’s basically essential.

I have issues with hydration. Are there any other vegitables I could try. Could a very shallow cap of water work?

Lastly, should I try small crickets? I heard that they don’t die as fast. But how long does it usually take for them to grow into big crickets?

Hi Kelli!

You’re definitely gonna need a bigger cage for your crix than a critter keeper. those things have HORRIBLE ventilation and horrible ventilation=dead crix.

I use a 31 gal Rubbermaid container with the middle part of the top cut out and aluminum screening duct taped over the hole. I use cricket quencher for water. Even a shallow water dish will drown crix. They’re REALLY stupid. You can also use cotton soaked in water or potatoes & carrots. To stop the rolling just put them in a small dish of some sort.

You’re gonna need some egg carton in the cage for them to hide under. And the toilet paper rolls work good too.

And once again, crickets need some type of protein for example Fish Flakes. lol Mine get fish flakes and plain oatmeal.

If you wanna breed, your gonna need the larger crix. The smaller crix only last longer because their younger. But don’t expect you crickets to live very long. Their life span is about 2 or 3 months at the most.

To breed all you gotta add to the tank is some sort of dish about 1 inch deep full of Bed-A-Beast or similar product (which I’m sure you have) and keep it moist. You are going to need more than 30 crix to start a colony. Try at lest 60-100.

Good Luck! I hope I answered all your questions.

I know..I am thinking about starting a colony. My beardie is eating 30+ crix a day.

I feed my crix-powdered milk, oats, rabbits pellets, cat food, dog food, calcium pellets, flukers orange cube cricket food which provide food, water and vitamins all in one..plus fresh veggies and fruit..oh and fish flakes.

I too house my crix in a 31 gallon rubbermaid container. With egg crates and TP rollls.

You can also buy a sponge and wet it and put it in the crix cage. They cant drown in a sponge...lol.(?)

good luck ;)

The problem with a sponge is that sometimes the crickets will eat it. Then it’s kinda like your feeding sponge to your herps! ha

"What do you feed you lizard?"
"sponge. how ’bout you"
"uhhh..."

This critter keeper is well ventilated (many many slits on the lid). I don’t want to breed the suckers, just stash them somewhere for a week or so until they’re fed off and I can stash some more!

I’ll try putting the food in a dish. Swab, of course! Genius!

Where can I get this quencher stuff and what is it?

My money is real tight right now, that’s why I’m not going to try breeding crickets. I have to pay off loads of vetbills for my cats’ eye surgery and it’s taking alot out of me.

yeah it can happen..But I have never had any problems with them eating the sponge.

I bought the flukers orange cube stuff at petsmart for 8$.If your gonna feed the crix that you wont need water.

Well, a bigger problem with a sponge is when it becomes a petri dish for mold and bacteria. How old is your beardie? 30 appropriate sized crickets isn’t very much for a beardie.

Cricket quencer is just water in jell form. I’ts by Flukers and kinda looks like blue jello all mixed around. I got mine at Petsmart for around $4.

Good Luck with your crix! and I hope you kitty is ok.

The kitty will go to the vet tomorrow to see if her eye can be saved. Man, kitty stress is everywhere around here. My sis said over the phone that I should put the cat down... But becuase of one non-lethal eye? That’s like putting a dog down because it looses its leg. It’s not like she’ll be perminantly disfigured or suffer in the future from it.

Anyway, I’ll drop by Petsmart later today for a handful of small crickets (I sincerely hope they don’t escape through the ventilation slots) and some of that 4 dollar quencher stuff. I’m not getting the 8 dollar stuff because I already have cricket vitamins and enough oats, vegis, and fruit to choke a horse. Crap... I was going to ask a question somewhere around here... Oh yeah! So, silly question and all, but will the crix be ok in the smaller, ventilated container for the 7- days til they’re fed off? Or am I going to loose more crix than I buy in the longrun this method?

I’m not sure. I guess it would be alright if it had good ventalation and you fed them off every week.

Good luck with the Kitty. If you don’t mind my asking, what happened to her?

Still don’t know if I should get large or small crix. I’ve always gotten large ones in the past. Mainly cause they’re easier to catch. Feel my turmoil and thought.

The kitty got an eye infection (presumably from a chemical or allergic reaction to a chemical). Fact, I made a thread about this in the cat forum and noone really gave a damn... That happens to alot of my question threads for some reason. After a week of eyedrops, the infection cleared up in one eye, but she got an ulser in her other one. Took her to the vet again, who did immediate surgery to save the eye. Tomorrow they’ll remove the eyelid stitch to determine wether or not the eye is savible.

Poor Kitty. I hope she can keep the eye!

The crix size just depends on what you want to feed. You will prolly want the big ones if you feed off every week. I think all you lizards are big enough to eat the big crix, right?

Oh yes, all of my lizards are full grown. I just keep hearing that the adults crix die up considerably fast compaired to the little ones. And I’m not sure if my visciously bloodthirsty appleslice is what did in the half of crickets I bought last time.

There, I bought some cricket quencher and 12 cricket (along with a new tetra fish, but let’s keep that conversation for another time). I put a small cap of quencher gel and a small cat of Sandfire SuperFoods Cricket Diet. Should I still include a third cap of oats and junk?

Wanted to give an update. Ever since I got the cricket quencher (and have been giving it to my crix and superworms), the deathtoll has gone down drastically (half became 1 or 2). Been only keeping a dousin crix in their keeper at a time, but will be trying 24 next week. So it’s all good.

Not a fair update unless you tell us about kitty! How is she doing? I have 2 and I am just plain an animal lover. 2 cats, 2 dogs (retired greyhounds), 2 geckos (new to us).

Fortunately we have never had any bad kitty problems.

Glad to hear your crickets are doing better. I’m starting to work on a new batch.

=P I’m surprised you wanted an update about the kitty. People in the cat forum are too interested in pics than helping me out. XD Or wanting updates. I wonder if I have bad karma there.

I took Mueshi to the vet last Friday and was told that Mueshi gets to keep her eye. The massive ulser is half the size it was, there’s white (healing) around it, and it’s looking good. The vet also apologized for over dreading the fact of the eye prob. Through the week I’ve been giving her the same 4 medications (2 eyedrops every 4 hours, a ’by mouth’ antibiotic twice a day, and the painkiller if she needs it. She’s still eating fine, crapping fine, and acting like herself. And also through the week I’ve seen alot more white around the ulser, so that’s a good thing.

=P I always have cat problems. I adopt unwanted cats from rescue shelters and they have their own issues. Well, only Mueshi and Teddy really have the issues. Mueshi was abused as a kitten and had bed-wetting, anxiety probs. But I’ve owned her for 6 years with no other issues, so this eye thing is remarkebly new. Teddy is my emaciated, 13 year old cat with breathing and walking issues. I adopted him 2 years ago with an agreement to give him a peaceful last few months/years of life. Puff is just a pain in the backside Alpha cat who’s mother was thrown out of a car before she was born. And Morris, my newest adoption, is just a frisky 1.5 year old kitten who likes breaking things to tell me all about it.

I lost a few crickets in the week. But it happened between the container running out of cricket quencher and putting in more.

Good to hear your kitty is doing good! I love cats.

Crickets will die, it happens. Don’t worry if a few die off here and there.

That cricket quencher saved my meal worm colony! It’s good stuff.

BTW, my Goldie, CJ, has been very bright for over a month now! I don’t know what I’m doing but he is very happy. He’s a very light/bright yellowish color. Just thought I’d tell you here since you don’t appear very much on the Goldie forum anymore. (That new guy is getting on my nerves, too.)
