Hey "Clawedfrogzrule" I have a question about...Clawed frogs! I have been thinking about getting two clawed frog-lets. My mom had one in her fish tank when i was younger, and suddenly i have acquired an interest for them, there also pretty funny/cute! Any way i was going to order just the frog-lets from a website called "GROW-A-FROG" And i just had a few questions..
I would like to know about the frog-lets care, and the right starting tank size, their only about one inch long, or so i was told. But the big question for me is that i hear using mechanical filters can cause them long term stress, is this true, i would be using a "fluval 2 plus" A medium-sized submersible filter. Also do you use gravel because i have red that they can/will in-jest it and of course...die. If you could help me out that would be great!

Hey "Clawedfrogzrule" I have a question about...Clawed frogs! Well, I’m not up to speed on xenopus care anymore, but I did have two for a good 8 years from grow-a-frog. I’m surprised that place is still around! I remember at least at one point I did have gravel in with my frogs, and yes they did ingest it. Most they spit back out but I remember one or more passing through their system, so to speak. I could see the little lump through their back. It was a worrying experience. I wouldn’t recommend gravel. I would say filtration is a must, but you might not want submersible filtration. I kept them when I first got them in the little tank that came with the kit thing, and boy did that cloud fast. For your other questions, someone more experienced should be able to help you out.
Cheers,
Nick

I find them quite amusing. They grow on you. I especially liked it when they called at night. :)
Cheers,

Hey "Clawedfrogzrule" I have a question about...Clawed frogs! Hi, in my tank I do have gravel, but I use a fine gravel so that if she does injest it, it can pass right through, but my particular frog spits out whatever she gets in her mouth that isn’t food anyway, so I don’t really worry about her. Besides that you could try large river rocks which would also work well in their tank. I know gravel is looked down upon, but I don’t see much way around it since these frogs like a place to hide and most plants need the gravel to stay in place. As for tank size I would say a ten gallon should work for one or two, you could start with a smaller tank if you want, but just know that they can grow to about the size of your hand in some cases, so you would need to upgrade to at least a ten gallon eventually. For the filter I use a whisper internal power filter, it attatches to the side of the tank and creates a sort of water fall. As for the problems associated with filter vibrations and frogs, when mine was a froglet I did keep her in an unfiltered critter keeper for about a year and then upgraded to the filtered tank later, so while they’re young it might be best to keep them in still water. I just used to clean the tank once a week and she was fine.
One more thing to note is that these guys can live for at least 10+ years when properly taken care of, and some have made it to the 20s, so they are a long term commitment. They are really cool and make great beginner frogs and are fairly easy to take care of. I’ve had mine for 6 years now and she is just so great.
Good luck, and if/when you get them be sure to check out the frog forum on here :)

Hey "Clawedfrogzrule" I have a question about...Clawed frogs! I’ll add something I didn’t think of earlier. Be sure your tanks are secure! I was always having trouble with escapes. I chased one around my living room for a few hours once. Another time one jumped into the filter... just make sure you lid the tank, and cover as much of the filter hole as you can. My best solution was to not fill the tank completely, but just enough to run the filter. This didn’t give them enough to jump out. Good luck!

Hey "Clawedfrogzrule" I have a question about...Clawed frogs! Are they fast growers? How long does it take for them to reach sexual maturity? What did you feed yours then she was a froglet?
Thanks

Hey "Clawedfrogzrule" I have a question about...Clawed frogs! They reach sexual maturity at about a year old, they grow pretty steadily I guess, not really that quick or slow, after about a year or two she reached her mark at about 4 1/2-5 inches. They’re a little hard to measure since they don’t want to sit still when you want them to, but I think that’s about her size the last time I measured.
If by froglet you mean it has all of it’s legs and the tail, they don’t eat anything, once they lose the tail you can feed small frog/tadpole pellets and bloodworms. They’re kind of hard to feed when they’re that young because they’re so tiny, but once they get bigger you have more options of what can fit in their mouths.

Hey "Clawedfrogzrule" I have a question about...Clawed frogs! No the froglet is a week or so past metamorphosis. So no filter huh? I have been e-mailing the crap out of the site asking lots a questions, but they don’t like to give very specific answers, go figure. But they told me to use a small sponge filter of some sort, but controll the air flow so there are limited bubbles being produced in the water. They have one on their website and its a little sponge filer but its ten dollars plus ten more dollars for shipping. I hope i can find one like it at my little ghetto pet store...

Hey "Clawedfrogzrule" I have a question about...Clawed frogs! Sorry I haven’t been on here for a couple of days, the filter sounds okay, and if that’s what they’ve been using than it should be fine. I saw this post on the frog forum just before about the playsand, no you can’t use it. The larger stones really are better, like the river rocks.

Hey "Clawedfrogzrule" I have a question about...Clawed frogs! That’s another problem, I hear that the feed on the bottom, and when food sinks there is a lot of spaces for the food to sink thorough where they cant get it. The site said where I’m ordering from, they sand if fine/better then gravel because it provides a place for helpful place bacteria to grow, and it simulate their natural habitat....

Hey "Clawedfrogzrule" I have a question about...Clawed frogs! Sand is so easy to swallow, I see where you’re coming from though. Honestly, it always seems like everyone has a different opinion with these guys and their substrate, and they all seem to work out...Whatever you feel more comfortable with is what you should do, I know there are a lot of debates going on with this and and each side has a plus and minus, so I’d say to just try it and see if works for you.
Good luck, I hope you get the little guy(s) soon, I’m sure they’ll enjoy whatever home you give them :)

Hey "Clawedfrogzrule" I have a question about...Clawed frogs! I will probably go with sand because it’s more natural looking, and it is thier natural substrate in the habitat...

Hey "Clawedfrogzrule" I have a question about...Clawed frogs! I just ordered them tonight, I’m very excited. I requested a male and a female froglet, hopefully they will be able to tell. Sorry but i cant post on the Internet My computer has a virus that we cant seem to get rid of. But I’m sure they will be very cute.
Actually i forgot to mention more up above the form but, i was confused because these were the African clawed frogs, and they are not allowed in Oregon. but when i was asking questions the did not say, but when i finally asked why, the said that their spices of Xenopus Laevis’s are not the same, they have been somehow genetically engineered to be different some how but I’m not sure how they are different...

Hey "Clawedfrogzrule" I have a question about...Clawed frogs! I don’t think you can tell the difference of a froglet, but maybe the company knows how?
And as for the genetic engineering, I’ve never heard of it and personally I believe that if it’s a member of the same species it would probably be the same, but I’d need more information like what exactly they changed about it. I know in Calif. the frogs are banned because they got into the wild and started eating everything, and I would guess it would be the same in your case...but as long as nobody knows I guess there’s no harm no foul as far as I’m concerned. Just make sure they don’t get out of the tank and into the waterways and you should be fine.lol.

Hey "Clawedfrogzrule" I have a question about...Clawed frogs! YES!!! They came on Thursday night, sorry i did not respond sooner. Their so cute! Their only about one inch long, and there getting along fine. And their eating well, their really fat too, like almost as big around they are long, lol i guess I’m feeding them to much!. The little kit they came in is supper small only a half gallon, so when the get a little bigger I’ll find a bigger home for them. The kit has sand and that’s easy to do a water change. but i Have a Question
How do you do a throew water change with sand, because the one they are in now i just have to dump all the water out and it’s as clean as can be. But in oh lets say a ten gallon, i can use a spyhopn to clean it or it will suck out all the sand. So can i do A water change with sand (other then replacing it) I mean if i kept the sphyon about 3 inches from the sane the should not disturb it, but the sand has to be cleaned as well because a lot of dookie will be in there...

Hey "Clawedfrogzrule" I have a question about...Clawed frogs! I’m glad you finally got them, they’re really cute aren’t they!
As for sand, I’ve honestly never had it for anything, even in my fish tanks, so I have no idea how you would clean it. There’s actually a fish forum on here though, and a couple of members on there use sand, so you’d probably have more luck asking them how they clean it.
Congratulations and good luck!

Hey "Clawedfrogzrule" I have a question about...Clawed frogs!
Yea they are WAY cute!!! And really fat, so I’m glad I’m feeding them well! I will defiantly look into the fish forum. I think my favorite thing about them is how they eat, they take their little hands and shove everything in there big ’o mouths, oh it’s great fin to watch! I cant wait until they get big! But do they eventually learn to eat off the top I’m having trouble, because when their at the surface they get scared and swim away. I hope they get use to me... Thank you for all of your helpful information, if i ever have another question I’m sure you will be the first to ask

Hey "Clawedfrogzrule" I have a question about...Clawed frogs! It takes a little while to get used to you, but after about 6 years mine finally just lets me watch her float at the top without swimming away. They also get bold enough to chase and try to grab your fingers while you’re dropping in the food...which can be pretty scary when you’re not expecting it.lol.
I’m glad to answer any questions, and you should definately be sure to check out the frog forum too, there are tons of experienced owners who can also help out and share input.
