 Hermit Crabs

Just got 2 Hermit Crabs for my daughters for Xmas. They (last 2 nights) have started digging/burrowing in their sand, is this an idication of something or are they just becoming more familiar and comfortable in their surroundings and becoming more active?

Hi,
I use to have hermit crabs. Make sure you get a humdifier to keep the humidity up they need humidity at 70 to 80 80 at the highest. temperature should be at 70 no higher than 78. Absolute humidity can be as low as 50%. Do not use kritter keepers they don’t hold humidity or heat.Your crabs are ether molting or just having fun. Probaly molting. Don’t dig them up or touch them when they are molting.

We have had our hermit crabs for a long time, we use pebbles in their tank.
They still dig holes for them to sleep in. It is probably normal for them to do that.

one of my hermit crabs has a chipped claw (smaller one) and one of his legs has a crack on it and it has been burying itself and making noise in the sand and I was wondering if its molting.

Hermit crabs burrow a lot just for fun, but it could be molting. Try the Hermit crab forum a couple of forums down, they’ll help you out more.

Yes the hermit crabs are just getting more comfortable. Plus they like to dig so it is dark when they sleep. Did you no they really do not like to be in light?

They’re nocturnal. Are you providing salt water to them? Not TABLE salt. Aquarium salt. Is there places for them to scuttle under? Do they have stuff to climb on? Are there any extra shells?
