 Hermit crab questions-new mama

I have just acquired a new hermit crab. Got it from one of those "tourist traps" in Fl. Need to pick up the necessary supplies for it in the next couple of days. It is in one of those small plastic carriers. I have a sponge for it and a shell and food. I let it exercise daily and wet it down also. Will it be ok until I get it a new home?

Also, how can you tell the males from the females? I am new at this. :}
