UGH THIS MAKES ME SO MAD...HELP!!

hi i’m cory and i’m new to this site.
Today I was at the mall and I walked into an asian food market. The animals kept in their were in terrible condition. There were different species of crabs being thrown around with tongs, one of the bins spilt and all the crabs smashed onto the ground. Their are loose limbs everywhere. It makes me sick seeing the poor little things trying to defend themselves. A lot of them were to injured to even try. I only had spare change on me so I bought as many as I can afford, which was sadly only two. Theyre atlantic blue crabs, both female...has anyone had any experiance with them who can help me? I’ve been doing research to keep them alive and help them. Theyre in better condition then when they were at the store. I’m going to buy food and all the nessesities they need first thing in the morning. If anyone has some advice please help these poor things!

well they are in that kind of condition because they are there to be eaten. so that’s why they were in that condition

My only crab experience is with fiddler crabs, so if they’re anything alike they need brackish water, some land to come out on, and for food they can eat fish, algae pellets, shrimp pellets, bloodworms, brine shrimp, and stuff like that. I personally don’t feed live food to my crabs so I stick to the shrimp and algae pellets. As for tank size I have no idea, how big are the crabs?
When I move out I plan on getting a really big tank to save some lobsters from the supermarket. I know people eat them, but at least I can save some of them and give them a nice life.

I could never stand killing or watching an animal be killed... not my way at all... if someone saw a human dying or being kille you instinct is to help right? Well animals to me well... I think humans are animals in a way and we got to stick up for one another and I do for animals

actually it has been proven that crustaceans do not feel heat and die quite peacefully this way, actually better than killing them any other way.

Where did you hear that, I honestly don’t believe it and I need to see some proof.

That species of crab needs saltwater, not brackish

look it up, we learned it in my marine biology class while watching a jacques cousteau type video.

"Peter Fraser, a marine biologist at the University of Aberdeen was interviewed by the UK Guardian on the Norwegian report and was on the record as saying "crabs and lobsters have only about 100,000 neurons, compared with 100bn in people and other vertebrates. While this allows them to react to threatening stimuli, he said there is no evidence they feel pain.""

"Eric H. Chudler, Director of Education and Outreach for the University of Washington Engineered Biomaterials has written "... the part of the brain responsible for the conscious perception and emotional significance of pain, the cerebral cortex, is absent in the lobster. Therefore, in my opinion, it is very unlikely that lobsters experience pain in the same way as humans.""

hmmm, well unless lobsters learn to talk I guess we can never know, just because there isn’t evidence doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist. I appreciate you putting the information on the post though, it’s something to at least think about.

i agree, but also because there is no true evidence, it could go either way, but i personally believe there arent any pain receptors. there have been studies where (yes this may seem cruel) they took off a limb or cut the lobster, it carried on without any evidence it was in pain. also last year we did an observation lab in marine bio with blue crabs and they actually fought in the bags we got them in (thank the lord for bait shops) and the one for my group was actually missing one of his big claws. when we touched him with a pair of tongs he grabbed onto the tongs with his only claw. it was neat because he wouldnt let go no matter what we did, so we got to study his anatomy and such much better and truely hands on.

now just hold it right there. there’s nothing wrong with eating animals but crabs are apart of nature, and you have to RESPECT nature!
