 Absolutly devestated...

So. Joey girl passed away today. We think she had a heart attack. I don’t know what happened; we were walking around the block and it was like her back leg went out from under her. I thought she tripped on something but couldn’t get up. She looked up at me with those eyes and I was FREAKING! Then she started shaking and was still. This all happened in 15 seconds. I don’t know how but I ran half a block to the back of our house SCREAMING for my husband to come. He ran out and tried to give her CPR, move her tongue from her throat but it was useless. I’m so heartbroken and... I don’t know. I don’t want to do a poor me but I have to say in less than I year, I lost my father to cancer (10 days after he was diagnosed), I lost my 4 1/2 year old rabbit who was my little girl, and now Joey. Wow... What an empty EMPTY feeling.

Thanks guys. We really appreciate it. I don’t blame my husband, there was nothing he could do. The neighbors asked if she ate something that was poisiness- it couldn’t have been in the second she went down because she was a very big girl. I did just read on-line that large breeds are predisposed for this heart disease which has no signs until sudden death. But it doesn’t make us feel any better. Thanks again.

So sorry to hear this. One thing to consider is having a necropsy done on the dog just to see what caused it.

Oh Poohgirl, don’t worry. She was almost 9, so for a large breed, she was doing great! No problem with the question.

Oh Wendy, I was thinking about you all day yesterday and how you’d be as heartbroken as us. It all happened so fast and I think we’re in complete shock. I came down the stairs this morning and there was no big lovey face waiting for me. It’s going to be very hard. And poor Bella; she’s been quiet and just snuggly. It will take time but we’ll be okay. I’m glad she didn’t suffer; my biggest fear was that she’d have hip problems and wouldn’t be able to walk. Thanks for your sympathy. I’m sad. :0(

Thanks Poohgirl and Ghastly. Oh Ghastly, I know you’re going through the roughest time just like us. I feel you and hope it gets easier. It will take time of course. Joey was a Great Prynees. I had a terrible week when my rabbit died also... It’s VERY hard. Oh I hate cancer. It’s the worst disease EVER! Thanks girls.

I sat there in shock, my mouth was wide open. I re-read, and re-read, and re-read your post like 6 times. I couldn’t believe it!! Two days ago Joey was happy, bouncy, and you have pictures of her and little Bella... and I was like, whoa, is this a joke? But yes, you will DEFINITELY be in my prayers.
I’m sorry to say that the cause could have very possibly been bloat. Next to hip dysplaysia, bloat is one of the most common defects of large breed dogs. Just in case you don’t know what it is, if a large breed dog drinks large quantities of water before a walk(s), air can be trapped in the stomach, and then the stomach twists, which is proven to be fatal
I am sooooo sorry again. I almost cried right then and there! Rest In Peace Joey girl
She taught me a lot about her breed. More than I expected

I’m glad you learned about Joey and the breed because it’s a wonderful one! They are very loyal, gentle, and just amazing. My neighbor back in Oregon has always had them. He just got a new one (from a rescue in WA) because his old boy, Gus, passed away from cancer. I know, it’s crazy to have her in my face one moment and then gone; vanished. I’m SO glad I took my camera out that day. I filmed her and Bella playing; I had told my husband I would be SO SAD if we didn’t have any videos of her before she passed away. It was just last week... Weird when you start thinking things like that before it happens. I guess mother’s intuition...? My mom and I are crying enough for everyone; please don’t cry. Joey’s having a blast and is running and eating whatever she wants with all the other lovies up there with her. I didn’t know about bloat; seems large breeds have a lot of predisposed things... Huh? Sucky deal.

Bloat is more associated with deep chested breeds, such as danes, shepherds, dobies, and even small deep chested breeds such as min pins, bostons, chis, etc. It is not limited to large breed dogs. Another thing to realize is bloat can happen to ANY dog, deep chested dogs just have it happen a lot more.

I know almost everyone on this site knows how it feels to lose a loved one. So sorry about your cat. She knew how much you loved her also. They probaly put her done so quickly so she wasn’t in any pain. They’re both together watching us.

randi....i keep thinking about her...i told my husband last night..he was shocked also...from the first pic he saw of her he liked her alot also....the only thing that keeps me from bawling is that she passed quickly!!...and u are right..at least no bad hip problems to cause her pain daily...thats my only consoltation...(listen to me...geez..like it was my dog!!....lol)..but i remember the pain of my cocker dog dying....it was bad!...and i thought i’d never get another dog again..i was honestly afraid to feel that pain again...and i still am now....but all we can do is love our doggies alot while we have them, so we know they had a good life(like joey did)...after i heard, i went and gave my dogs big hugs and kisses... and when i get my great pyr.,.... i’m gonna name him/her..Joey,....(if u dont mind?)
do u think it was bloat or heart?...i am so scared of bloat with my dogs....i wish i knew concrete ways to prevent it.....i dont think there is a way though..and its frustrating!!..well..best wishes...wendy.....p.s...i figured out how to send pics on e-mail...(i think)...if u want to see daisy and hammie...(let me know)...i cant figure out how to get them on this dumb site!!

A surgery called Gastroplexy will prevent the twisting of the stomach (but not the bloating), which is actually what kills the dogs. I had this procedure done on my Bouvier when she was getting spayed. Thankfully, since I work there, I got a HUGE discount, otherwise, I am not sure I could afford it. The vet i work for charges $300 on top of the spay, anesthesia, surgery pack, etc. So it is an expensive investment, but it is such a relief not to have to worry about waiting so long after exercise before she can eat, etc. It was the best "investment" i ever made.

yeah herp i have heard of that sugery....if i had known about it when i got daisy spayed..i would of gotten it done!!!.....noone even asked me!!....(and..up here anyways...thay say its not too much more on top of the spay..the saint rescue said like 50-100$ more).....but for my male...it will probably be ALOT more...cause its only a neuter....but i’m gonna ask and see, when i get him fixed.....are there any other ways to help prevent it?....i wet her food..and let it swell before feeding..thinking it will have less of a chance to swell in the stomach?.....bloat is a scary thing!..thanks, wendy

Wow HerpsinIN, I never knew about twisting in the stomachs or ANYTHING. WOW! What an eye opener. Thanks for the story! So glad you got it done and it didn’t bankrupt you :0)

Reddcatt, I’m sorry about your cocker. I always loved those! I heard they pee in the house a lot... True? Of COURSE you can use Joey’s name! She would LOVE IT! We always called her Jo-Jo or Jo-Jo-B. It’s a good name! And my mom called her Josepine. She just looked at her like, grandma what are you talking about. Funny girl! YES! I am dying to see pictures of Daisy and Hammie! My little oink oink! My e-mail address is: .com Yes, I’ve been extra snuggly with everyone in the house today. Am really working with Bella and getting her not to bite. I know she’s taking this hard but she’s only 5 months old, so I hope she won’t take it TOO hard. You know? Can’t wait for those pictures! Thank you and your hubby for the extra Joey loving! She loved the attention she got! She knew she was gorgeous! :0)

Twisted Stomachs

Yeah when you feed your dog you must wait 1 hour
Or more after it has finished eating before you take it on
It’s evening walk or evan play in the yard
As with the stomach digesting the food
And running around don’t work well together
The stomach gets twisted and tie’s in a knot shape
Hense the name Twisted Stomach
First signs are that they are slower don’t stretch there
Legs too far and they gett all bloaty around the stomach area
Evan in long hair dogs you can see it
If your dog/anyone’s dog gets a twisted stomach
It must be taken to the vets STRAIGHT AWAY
Nothing lke ill just finish it’s walk or let me have a drink first
Seriously if the dog get it
Jump in the car and drive as fast but not breaking the speed limit
To the vet practise say it’s an emergency saying the dog has got a twisted stomach you will
Get seen to straight away
Or evan phone them on your way there on a mobile headset

I would seriously be scared if that happened to any of my dogs
Let alone a friends or strangers

Ghastly, thanks for the info. Good thing we run in the am and then eat... I was thinking of asking if that was bad but it seems like it’s the best option...

Erica, thank you for the BEAUTIFUL tribute to Joey! It’s was amazing and my cheeks are still wet. I posted it on my Space to show everyone! That was SO sweet of you! So sorry about your recent losses I imagine it is SO hard to have foster animals and then have to give them up. How do you do it? What breed is the 123 pounder? Thanks again!

Reddcatt, I sent you a message. It wouldn’t let me put my whole e-mail address is, hope you understand it! We are doing okay thank you. We went to visit my mother-in-law and took Bella. She had fun running around with the chickens and cruising in the car. The town is small so she didn’t need her leash, since most people walk or ride a bike, so she was happy! Good to keep her mind off the emptier house... Thanks for checking on us. How are all your little ones? And the hubby of course?
