 A Not-So-Happy Update; Heart Murmur

So, everything had been going very well. Peaches was being active, acting mostly normally, and very energetic and playful like she’s been for the past 13 years (on April 16th, she’s turning 13). Other than a little coughing, she’d been great.
Well, yesterday we got out an hour early from school at 2:00 to kick off Spring Break. I was planning on meeting my boyfriend at the local community center right after school, so unfortunately I was in a rush. I got off the bus, ran to my house, put some food and water in Peaches’ bowls, and hooked her up to her leash and we took off. Since I was in a rush, we ran hard and fast. She was fine, until the end of our run. She started hacking for a second, and then SHE JUST COLLAPSED! I tried picking her up, but she immediately went limp and started whining like she was dillusional. I ran screaming in the house "mom, mom, Peaches is hurt!!!!!" and my mom rushed outside. Her head was turned back, limp, in an awkward position and she stopped breathing for a sec.
We put her in the van with a little water and rushed her to the vet. After a 10 minute wait, they went to see her. She was twitching, panting EXTREMELY heavily, and having little muscle convulsions. After she calmed down, my vet ran a few tests, and the results were’nt good. Apparently, she’d dropped half a pound since just a few months ago, her heartbeat was increasing, and the verdict was this: She has a Grade 3 to 4 Heart Murmur. (6 being worst). She’s not on antibiotics yet, but she is required to rest A LOT. Anotherwards, she won’t be able to run anymore. We’re keeping her inside to monitor her energy levels, and to reduce heat stroke, and all she gets to go outside to do is to go to the bathroom, get some fresh air, and a one-a-day walk. This is SO hard for me to see her like this. She’s been my running buddy for years, and suddenly she’s practically on bed rest. It’s making her miserable! I took her outside today, and she was fighting the leash to get free and sprint. Sh eventually settled down, but wasn’t happy about it. My vet says that her lungs could potentially fill with fluids in a few months if we’re not careful. He says it’s not life-threatening right now and probably won’t be, but if she needs it we’re looking at regular antibiotics. He also says that if she gets to worked up, she could pass out again.
This is the first time in her life she’s needed to be taken to the vet for anything sudden other than a regular scheduled check-up. She’s my BEST FRIEND IN THE WHOLE ENTIRE WORLD!!! We’re basically Siamese twins. Almost.
Well, just had to update you guys. She’s a fighter. I know she’ll pull through.

Ah hunny i feel for you
You and Peaches are like inseprable
You always speak of the fun you have
I understand how you feel with Heart Murmur i myself have one
Sometime’s it is a small hole in the heart which can be there since birth
And other time’s it is a different heart beat
For example. The common heart beat goes ’’Da Dum, Da Dum, Da Dum’’
A murmured heart beat goes ’’Da. . . Dum, . . . Da Dum, . . Da . . . . . Dum’’ etc.
Just seriously becareful on how long she is out for a walk for
I can struggle with a 5min run
But in dogs im not sure how long it would take before you would call an end to the walk
When she does go out for a walk
Or evan playing ball in the back yard watch how she acts
As she may pass out to exaustion as the heart isn’t able to keep up
I remember in gym class i fell off a climbing apparatice and hit the wooden floor at the bottom
As the school had decided that they wouldn’t pay attention to it
And of course without enough oxygen getting pumped around the body you pass out
So just be careful on how you play ok?
I don’t mean to seem as if to freak you out im just giving pointers
Plus she will breath 10 times faster so don’t worry about that
You need to speak just give me a message my message center is always open ^^
Take care
Give Peaches a hug from me

Thank you all SO much, especially Ghastly. I know you guys are always here for me. You know, I was thinking, Repticzone is like a family...like my home away from home.
Well she’s doing well (we decided she’d be okay with some access to her outdoor kennel; she can’t exasperate herself out there).
We’re going very slow for now

Thank you guys so much for the support...she’s doing well so far. A little coughing, and we’re just going on walks in the backyard for now, but we’ll take it easy and she’ll do good. The vet says we can try a short run, but stop and go inside if she starts having problems, but I don’t want to take that chance, because she’s been coughing just on walks.
Also, I have an off-topic question. There’s a rabbit colony that lives in my backyard. When Peaches was younger, she’d chase the bunnies, but now she just sniffs their trails and...eats their droppings! Is that normal?
Thanks for all your help, you all mean so much
-Jeni
p.s. Here’s a poem/song lyrics I wrote:
You’re with me through the good and bad
You dry my tears when I am sad
You’re always there for me
But we both know we can’t forever be
You make me laugh, you make me smile
I wish you could stay a while
Longer
When we were young
You still are at heart
We’d run through the grass
The sun in my hair
The light in your face
Your radiance shone on even the
Darkest days
But days were never dark
With you around
We’re everywhere together
You never leave my mind
Every kiss
Every smile
Ever grin you flash
Stays with me
Through eternity
You’re sitting here
As I write this poem
Smiling and giving me
That look
That tells me
You’re listening
But I don’t need the reassurance
You always are
I wish we could go back
To the days from afar
Where we’d laugh and frolic along
Never thinking
About the future
Well now, maybe the time has come
Boy, I sure hope not
My HEART is in a knot
I just don’t know how to tell you
But you’re already listening
So I’ll say it now
The best I can
I LOVE YOU PEACHES
You’re my best friend in the entire world
And I’ll never leave your side
I promise
We’ll be together through infinity
I promise
I’ll love you forever
I promise
I’ll cherish you always
So please just understand
I LOVE YOU
To the best friend in the whole entire world
Love from me to you.
-Jeni

Thats horrid. I know you prolly don’t want this to really come back up seeing how you know, things turned out....

im just horrified because that sounds kinda like something my dog does and once the vet heard her cough and they were like ’I dont like the sound of that cough’ we kinda blew it off because she does that alot... All I know is that she is about 9 years at the youngest (rescue dog, unknown age) and it has been the best 7 years ever and i love her so much. it will be like someones stabbing me in the heart when she dies. and then my best friend has my dogs name so i will never be able to say her name without thoughts of my beloved dog.

do you know if there are any ways to prevent heart murmers? im just afraid my dog my be on risk for them... the vet did say somthing about her heart when she mentioned the coughing... well, i am very very sorry and i hope things turn out better for you; im off to google...
