Here’s my Lab, Dudley.

The breeds are pretty similar. I’ll break it down for you. Remember, I am generalizing. There are exceptions to every rule.

Labs are more laid back and mellow than Goldens. Labs are a bit more independant and a little less clingy than Goldens. Labs can be conditioned to play when you are ready. Goldens play when they are ready. Goldens are more prone to separation anxiety. Labs are sturdier, healthier and less prone to cancer than Goldens.

All in all, they are both great dogs; very eager to please and great for beginners. Do not buy one from a pet shop or a back yard breeder. Go to some dog shows and find a few that you like. Work with the breeders and go that route. If you are looking for a breeder, let me know. I am friends with one of the best breeders in the US. She will be able to steer you in the right direction.

Thank you for the quick reply--he is beautiful (well, handsome, lol)!! We will actually be adopting from the humane society this summer, and we’re most interested in those two breeds, but we’re trying to keep our options wide open--we’re just researching right now. Our dog just passed a month ago and we’re not quite ready for another dog yet, but we will definitely be trying to find one later this year.
Thanks,
-Peaches and Jeni

You have already herd the pros so here are some cons:

Both breeds have a tendency to become obese(as do all dogs but these 2 in particular) and this can shorten life expectancy.

Both breeds shed.....a LOT.

Both breeds LOVE water(maybe not a con) so they get the wet dog smell sometimes.

Goldens can become overheated sometimes(depending on where you live).

Thats all i can think of.

:)

i got some more cons..

labs can become terrutoryal very ealy.

goldens are known to be really nice, there for people well pet your dog with out cautoin, ( once this happened and champ got a little mad and snapped)

both can get over heated,

they get bored easley.

and also goldens aren t the breed that has a tendecny to be obese, it s just labs

I like some little dogs, it depends on the breed for me. If you get big dogs that grow REALLY fast (like Drake did) sometimes they have alot of problems. Drake just had a horrible seizure Wednesday, and has alot of joint problems and stomach problems and such.

i don’t really like little dogs. they just don’t appeal to me because i like dog who can go out and run and swim and rough house...small dogs are just not my type. lol the smallest dog i would consider is a corgi but thats cuz they are big dogs in a small body their cute!

We’re not the big, breed-biased family who says that purebreds are better than mixed, so we’ll probably end up with a good, old fashioned hardy mixed breed, but if we find a healthy, rowdy, affectionate Golden, we’ll surely jump at the chance.
Thanks for all the pics and advice; keep ’em comin!!

When we breed Kacey (years and years ago) we put her with my friends really dark red male. Kacey ended up with 8 puppies, one died at the vet and she killed two of them (stupid vet took them away from her after they were born and she freaked out). We ended up with 5..4 males and a female. Two of the males were dark red like the dad (darker then the pic above) and each had a patch of white somewhere on their body. Then the other two males were a whitish gold, didn’t look anything like Kacey or the dad. Sadie is the only one that even looks close to her mom, we mix them up all the time!
