 Help training a dachshund

hi! i’ve had jake for over a year now. he’s turning 2 in august. he’s been great. i’ve got no problems with him most of the time. i got used to his nasty behavior which is very rare. maybe it’s my fault that he has become very destructive whenever i leave him home alone. but i just can’t bring him everywhere i go. i’d rather him stay home than in a cage at the petshop.

also, jake sleeps next to me when my boyfriend isn’t here. but my boyfriend just isn’t used to him yet. he sees jake only during the weekends. weekends, jake get the couch. they’ve known each other for a long time now. my bf has never had a dog. and bf is a cat person!!!

we have been trying so hard to train him not to chew and rip things apart whenever he’s home alone.or whenever he likes it cause he does it sometimes even when we had just left him for a couple of hours. not only when the boyfriend is here, sometimes he does it weekdays too!!!

i just don’t understand why he does it. he gets enough attention. jake is sneaky too so i don’t really catch him when he is doing something bad.

help!!!

First of all, as hard as it is, get Jake his own bed and have him sleep on it OUTSIDE your room, even when your boyfriend isn’t over. Jake has to learn that you’re in charge, and what you say goes, so never break down and let him do something he knows he shouldn’t or that you don’t want him to. But don’t just close the door; leave the door open and put a gate in between the hallway (which should also be gated off so there’s nowhere for him to run into another room) so he can see you for comfort. When you’re gone, move the gates in to another room where there’s nothing he can chew that’s yours, and keep him in there. Supply him with several toys like ropes, small rubber tires, rubber Kongs or treat-stuffed balls, etc. to keep him from chewing. Hey may be chewing out of frustration and boredom, so just keep him busy. Never buy a toy shaped like another object (ex. chews designed like slippers, people, etc.) because he may become confused and chew the real thing.
Good luck!!!!

Avoid rope toys!!!!!!!!!!!! Even the ones sold for dogs. Seen too many horror stories. If your dog chews it up and swallows the strings you can end up with very expensive surgery to repair the intestines, or worse. One of our techs had to have her dog put down during surgery when the piece of rope toy was so wrapped in the sphincter it couldn’t be removed.
Stuffing a kong with food and hiding a couple for her to find may help with the separation anxiety, along with other inedible toys and chewies.
I’ve seen some amusing ex-rays of dog’s bellies with everything from nuts and bolts, kitchen sponges, socks, kid’s toys etc... And the owners really love examining their dog’s poop for a few days to make sure these things pass! ;) Just be careful that what you give her can’t be torn apart and swallowed.

most of his toys are the squeaky rubber ones and plastic bottles. not sure if they are safe though. but i think he just bites them.

Dachshunds are......stubborn.

They were bred to be independent and self serving. Not an easily trained dog but can be trained.

Just keep at it or call Victoria from "It’s me or the dog" lol. She should help. :)
