Spay/Neuter trip to Mexico! (pic HEAVY)

I took a trip in May with a group of people from several rescues and spay/neuter clinics to spay and neuter dogs and cats in Mexico. Pretty crazy, thought I’d share some pics. WARNING: there is one graphic (surgery) photo, but I tried to avoid posting them because some people may have a bit of a weak stomach : )

If you didn’t notice, I’m back on RZ!

those poor pups...all covered in fleas? Is all y’all do was spay and neuter pets or did you take care of other medical stuff?

people who keep animals there at least are trying for their pets so that good and it’s good to have people willing to assist them and their furry friends

Looks like it was a success ... What part of Mexico did you go again I forgot what you told me ? ... I was in Tabasco for a week after there floods for animal rescue but there government knew how to handle a disaster better then ares I guess. So there really wasn’t a need for trappers. We did a few emergency rescues for a lot of injured ones while I was there. People where back in there homes after a week not like New Orleans. I have pics from when I was there if you want me to send them to you... Keep up the good work, proud of you Anna :)

Well, we were a bit short on supplies because we didn’t have the right permits to get drugs across the border, but we did give every single animal a Rabies vaccine and flea treatment. There was one with a broken foot that got a cast, a few with mange that we referred to the local vet, etc. but we weren’t set up like a vet clinic to treat them. The most important thing initially is to make sure there are fewer of them.

There was also one dog whose dew claws were curled back around into his feet, so those got surgically removed while he was neutered, there was one dog who had seizures that was referred to the local vet after surgery, etc.

Every dog there also has this weird blood parasite that makes surgeries awful because they bleed so much. A few of them were very scary there was so much blood loss. Luckily we had fluids to give them.

We also had those tiny puppies (too young to be fixed) and their mom who all got flea treatment and mom got vaccinated. So we did our best with basic medical attention with what we had, next time we will be better prepared. The most important things we did were just to explain to the owners that there was a problem in the first place. See this rope around your dog’s neck? Loosen it so it doesn’t cut into his flesh. See this can of food? Give it to your dog every day.

In a country where people struggle to feed their own children, there just aren’t enough resources and education to take care of animals. We are also trying to find a vet who can spay and neuter raccoons because they are an invasive species and they eat the sea turtle eggs which decreases the sea turtle population.

Anyway...

Haha Craig EVERY country would have dealt with a flood better. Katrina was ridiculous. I was SO sad that I couldn’t go with Pasado’s (very close to where I live) to help in New Orleans because I wasn’t old enough : ( But I do know a lot of people who went (a bunch of the people in the video if you saw it on their website) and it was insane.

What a great thing you did. I hope you’re very proud of yourself and what you guys accomplished. Not many people would be able and/or willing to do some of the things it sounds like you did. Well done!

Thanks! It was exhausting, lol. 12-14 hour days and blistering hot. No air conditioning and we couldn’t use fans because we didn’t want to blow dust into the incisions.

Anyway, it was a good thing to do. I hope I can go back next year : )

hey when it comes to helping animals every little kindness helps :)

I felt bad for those puppies at first i though they just had like dirty water on them then i say closer and o those poor guys had to be highly anemic. That poor jack Russel and pitty where terribly thin...man im sorry to say but if i could not feed my family i would for sure not take on pets..but at least there are people out there who can help

I know that it’s a difficult thing to understand, but where would the dogs go if no one in Mexico had them and gave them the best they had? They don’t have shelters and rich people to give sanctuary to all the dogs. The dogs would be living on the streets with no food or shelter. If the US didn’t take advantage of Mexican labor and get cheap crops from their impoverished farmers, they would be a bit better off.

But then, what American wants to pay twice as much for a banana? Many of Mexico’s problems are actually stemming from the US. Our love of dogs (even though millions are euthanized each year) only seems to extend to our own.

true.

lol i love all dogs though..ask my mom she get mad cuz i try to take in the millions of dogs people dump off up in the woods by our house..it’s sad that people think it’s ok to drop their pets off in the wild and hope they survive..with no animal control here it’s impossible to help them all.
