 Help with puppy please

I may have accidentally spoiled my little monster too much. He hates it when I put him in his cage and am out of his sight. This makes going to bed a long process because he’ll cry and cry and cry for about 5 or ten minutes. Does anyone know of a way I can discourage this behavior? He also likes to chase the cats and one of my kitties isn’t feeling well so I’m quick to stop him on that, but earlier I put him in his cage so I could look at Jasmine (not one that isn’t feeling well, but that’s why I was checking her) who wasn’t being very willing anyway, but he started howling when I put him in his cage then! I’m not sure what I can do other than ignore it. He stops eventually I’d just like this to stop sooner rather than later. I’ll post more pictures of him and some of all my kitties either tomorrow or tuesday.

The fastest and easiest way to get your dog’s behavior to stop is by placing an electric collar on him that shocks him when ever he barks or whine.

A lot of times, dogs don’t care if you’re going "ah ah ah". It’s just a simple noise. It doesn’t hurt your dog. And, even if it scares your dog, he’ll probably start to whine again when you leave the room. I’ve had friends who’ve had dogs that never shut up. Even when they yell at them, they’ll continue to bark.

You can always take the long route. You can let your dog bark and whine non- stop without disturbing him, eventually hoping he’ll learn that it won’t get him any where. This way is very slow and difficult though.

You can also try spraying him with water. Many dogs don’t like having water sprayed on them. This will require you to get up constantly to spray your dog though.

Hey, if I’m not mistaken, this guy has a TINY little puppy (like 8 weeks old it looked like from the other post?). I wouldn’t suggest using a shock collar ever, but especially not on an 8 week old puppy.

As far as whining goes, he’s doing it for attention. If every time he whines you go over to him to let him out or pet him or feed him or whatever, he is getting exactly what he wants and has trained you to give him attention when he whines. You need to teach him that you will ignore him when he whines.

So, next time he does it, squirt him with a water bottle, give a command ("quiet"), in a deep, low throated voice, and ignore him. Works charms, doesn’t scare your dog to death.

When he is quiet for a good period of time, give him a treat!

Oh, one more thing. You should make his crate the GREATEST place in the world. Instead of only putting him in it to sleep or when he needs to be out of the way, work on making it a place that he really wants to go. Put a nice comfortable bed in there. His favorite toys. Feed him only in his crate (just put the food in the back and have him walk in to eat without shutting the door). Any time he enters his crate, give him a single command ("crate", "kennel up", "in", etc.) so he starts to associate it with the word. Play with him in his crate, give him treats in his crate, pet him, make it really fun and exciting when he goes it. Just leave it out on the floor as his bed (don’t give him a separate bed) and he’ll get used to it.

Instead of sticking a shock collar on him that will, undoubtedly, go off every single time he goes in his crate (when he starts whining), making him HATE going in his crate, try making him love it.

Well, if the dog is truly that young, then a shock collar should not be used. Also, shock collars aren’t cruel or any thing. My family’s used shock collars for a very long time. We mainly use them when we go hunting. We do this with dogs who some times try to wander off. It works very well.
I’ve personally tried all kinds of shock collars before. I don’t really know how to describe the feeling they give off. It’s not painful, but it doesn’t feel good. I kind of like the sensation you feel when they shock you. It’s incredible. :D

If the dog is a puppy, howling is absolutely natural. The best way to go about fixing this is to put the crate in your bedroom. After the first few nights of the dog in the crate, start putting a blanket over it to promote seclusion. Every time you put the dog in the crate, state a word (puppy house, for example) and give the dog a treat, such as a baby carrot. This will make the crate a positive experience.

If your cat is sick or ill, keep it in a room away from the other pets with its own litterbox and food. This will keep the sick cat from infecting the others (if the problem is a cold) and the sick cat wont be bothered.

Should the dog whine while the crate is in your bedroom, ignore the dog and pay no attention to it (ie, get earplugs). The complaining should go away in time.

The best way to train a dog not to bark, if barking should become an issue in the future outside of the crate, is to simply hold the dog’s mouth closed with one hand and say "Stop barking" or a similar command. Keep doing it, even if you have to do it repeatedly, and the dog will first bark when you’re not in the area, then stop altogether.

Stopping cat chasing is similar. When the dog looks at the cats or starts to chase them, correct the dog by first grabbing its collar, then force it into a sitting or submissive position. Give the dog a treat (or leave it alone) when it sits there and either pays attention to you or to nothing at all. If the dog runs towards the cats, practice the come command and offer a treat (or vegi) or toy as a reward every time it does. Soon, with some extreme repetitive work, the dog should come to understand that the cats are not something you believe is chaseable. If you use a toy, the dog will understand that it can chase toys, but not cats.

The trick is, regardless of the age or size of the dog, that you have to do it every single time the dog is out of order. If you let up or only do it half the time, the dog will get mixed messages.

He’s almost 3 and a half months old, as far as the cat chasing what I’ve been doing is when he’ goes to chase the cat or look like he’s gonna chase the cat I’ll grab him almost by the scruff but not quite pull the scruff and growl no at him. I’ve only had to do this a couple times and he stops at the moment. IE he’ll leave the cat alone while they’re in the room together but if any other cat goes by a couple hours later he’ll still get that "ooh I wonder if that thing will play with me too?" look. At which point I repeat. I’ve only started doing this today but so far it’s worked out very well. As far as the barking he only does it when I put him in his cage. If he’s distracted ad I leave the room then he’s fine going into his cage and he gets rewarded for going in. I can tell him go in your cage and point into it and he’ll go, he just doesn’t like staying in there when I’m around.

I’ve been torn about feeding him in the cage but I think I’m going to start doing that just because he gets distracted easily and will stop eating and i don’t think he’s getting enough food. Well, let me rephrase that, he doesn’t get enough of HIS food. He likes eating my other dogs food as well as the catt food so I think I’m going to switch him over to that brand of food soon, gradually of course.

I put the crate in my room when I have an off day so I can be in charge of bringing him in and out of the crate for potty, playtime etc. Otherwise it’s in the living room so the rest of the house doesn’t have to go to my bedroom everytime they get him out.

He is possibly one of the smartest puppies I have ever seen. He responds well to all the training I’ve given him, he understands when I don’t want him to do something and when I’m happy that he did something. I just couldn’t figure out how to stop him from crying other than ignoring his cries. But I have to admit there is one thing I’ve let him "train" me to do. If he wants to be held, then very similar to a child he’ll run in front of me, sit in front of my and once I stop he puts his paws up in the "hold me" stance lol. I can’t help but let myself be trained it’s so cute and I’m prepared to deal with the spoiled puppy always wanting up. At first I thought it was funny when he would chase the one cat simply because my cats are always large and in charge and usually instill the fear of god into my dogs. Then it quickly became annoying when the cats became a bit more skittish. So no more kitty chasing for Bowser. I think I’m gonna end this message before I continue rambling.

I’m gonna try the happy cage place thing. He already has toys in there, i don’t want to put a bed in there until he’s completely potty trained. Thanks for the advice anyone have anymore for me?
