A lot of times, dogs don’t care if you’re going "ah ah ah". It’s just a simple noise. It doesn’t hurt your dog. And, even if it scares your dog, he’ll probably start to whine again when you leave the room. I’ve had friends who’ve had dogs that never shut up. Even when they yell at them, they’ll continue to bark. You can always take the long route. You can let your dog bark and whine non- stop without disturbing him, eventually hoping he’ll learn that it won’t get him any where. This way is very slow and difficult though. You can also try spraying him with water. Many dogs don’t like having water sprayed on them. This will require you to get up constantly to spray your dog though. |

As far as whining goes, he’s doing it for attention. If every time he whines you go over to him to let him out or pet him or feed him or whatever, he is getting exactly what he wants and has trained you to give him attention when he whines. You need to teach him that you will ignore him when he whines. So, next time he does it, squirt him with a water bottle, give a command ("quiet"), in a deep, low throated voice, and ignore him. Works charms, doesn’t scare your dog to death. When he is quiet for a good period of time, give him a treat! |

Instead of sticking a shock collar on him that will, undoubtedly, go off every single time he goes in his crate (when he starts whining), making him HATE going in his crate, try making him love it. |

I’ve personally tried all kinds of shock collars before. I don’t really know how to describe the feeling they give off. It’s not painful, but it doesn’t feel good. I kind of like the sensation you feel when they shock you. It’s incredible. :D |

If your cat is sick or ill, keep it in a room away from the other pets with its own litterbox and food. This will keep the sick cat from infecting the others (if the problem is a cold) and the sick cat wont be bothered. Should the dog whine while the crate is in your bedroom, ignore the dog and pay no attention to it (ie, get earplugs). The complaining should go away in time. The best way to train a dog not to bark, if barking should become an issue in the future outside of the crate, is to simply hold the dog’s mouth closed with one hand and say "Stop barking" or a similar command. Keep doing it, even if you have to do it repeatedly, and the dog will first bark when you’re not in the area, then stop altogether. Stopping cat chasing is similar. When the dog looks at the cats or starts to chase them, correct the dog by first grabbing its collar, then force it into a sitting or submissive position. Give the dog a treat (or leave it alone) when it sits there and either pays attention to you or to nothing at all. If the dog runs towards the cats, practice the come command and offer a treat (or vegi) or toy as a reward every time it does. Soon, with some extreme repetitive work, the dog should come to understand that the cats are not something you believe is chaseable. If you use a toy, the dog will understand that it can chase toys, but not cats. The trick is, regardless of the age or size of the dog, that you have to do it every single time the dog is out of order. If you let up or only do it half the time, the dog will get mixed messages. |

I’ve been torn about feeding him in the cage but I think I’m going to start doing that just because he gets distracted easily and will stop eating and i don’t think he’s getting enough food. Well, let me rephrase that, he doesn’t get enough of HIS food. He likes eating my other dogs food as well as the catt food so I think I’m going to switch him over to that brand of food soon, gradually of course. I put the crate in my room when I have an off day so I can be in charge of bringing him in and out of the crate for potty, playtime etc. Otherwise it’s in the living room so the rest of the house doesn’t have to go to my bedroom everytime they get him out. He is possibly one of the smartest puppies I have ever seen. He responds well to all the training I’ve given him, he understands when I don’t want him to do something and when I’m happy that he did something. I just couldn’t figure out how to stop him from crying other than ignoring his cries. But I have to admit there is one thing I’ve let him "train" me to do. If he wants to be held, then very similar to a child he’ll run in front of me, sit in front of my and once I stop he puts his paws up in the "hold me" stance lol. I can’t help but let myself be trained it’s so cute and I’m prepared to deal with the spoiled puppy always wanting up. At first I thought it was funny when he would chase the one cat simply because my cats are always large and in charge and usually instill the fear of god into my dogs. Then it quickly became annoying when the cats became a bit more skittish. So no more kitty chasing for Bowser. I think I’m gonna end this message before I continue rambling. I’m gonna try the happy cage place thing. He already has toys in there, i don’t want to put a bed in there until he’s completely potty trained. Thanks for the advice anyone have anymore for me? |
