Dog sleeping on pillow, Is this a sign of dominance? Please help?!

hey, my daughter has a young rescued jack Russel terrier cross, she is the only person the dog trusts fully, I have researched jack Russel’s, and although she is a cross she shows alot of their trates. She sleeps in my daughters room as she will not sleep any where else, we have tried to stop this, but the dog seems to have some kind of separation anxiety, i believe this is because she was beaten as a pup, and for some reason my daughter is seen as some kind of saviour or protector of her. My question right now is that i have noticed the dog sleeping on my daughters pillow, while their sleeping, is this because she wants to be higher up as a sign of dominance or maybe she’s protecting my daughter, i could really do with some answers because i don’t want it to esculate in to some thing worse Please help?!

It depends. Some dogs sleep on their owners pillows because it’s comfortable. What is her behavior like when not in your daughter’s bedroom?

You may have a dominance issue with your dog if:

- He resists obeying commands that he knows well.

- He won’t move out of your way when required.

- He nudges your hand, takes you’re arm in his mouth or insists on being petted or played with (in other words, ordering you to obey him).

- He defends his food bowl, toys or other objects from you.

- He growls or bares his teeth at you under any circumstances.

- He won’t let anyone (you, the vet, the groomer) give him medication or handle him.

- He gets up on furniture without permission and won’t get down.

- He snaps at you.

Also, you shouldn’t have given in. You shouldn’t just leave her possible seperation anxiety unattended.

xxxShoc+Collarxxx, this isn’t rocket science. ;D

Dogs have preferences, like humans. Some dogs like sleeping at the foot of the bed. Some like sleeping on top of their owners. And some even like sleeping on their owner’s pillows. It’s not that difficult to understand. My cat sleeps on my pillow, but I don’t go around wondering why she does it. I don’t have to because I know. She feels comfortable and secure there. Some dogs just like sleeping on pillows. It’s not that difficult to understand.

xxxShoc+Collarxxx, I was just playing with you. I’m a very sarcastic person. I can’t help it.

Mmm k? That reminds me of that teacher from South Park. XD

Also, I haven’t been throwing out insults. I also don’t intend to, as fighting with you is pointless. Oh, and I’m not mad. I’m actually quite happy at the moment.

I’ve had lots of dogs who slept on the pillow and it had nothing to do with dominance. They just wanted to be under the covers. So if they wanted to get air, then putting their head on the pillow next to me was the way to go.

Terriers tend to pick one person to protect and be loyal to. Obviously your dog has chosen your daughter. I wouldn’t worry unless the dog is so protective of her, that he snaps at you or tries to keep you from getting near your daughter in any way. If that happens get to a trainer/behaviorist immediately!

Good luck- sounds like your girl has a best friend. And (hope I get this right) Cymru am Byth!
