A Happy Ending to the Story...Unexpected Twist

So, no, we’re not ready for a dog quite yet, but we are picking up our new kitten, Caesar, up on Saturday. He’s mostly for my sister’s birthday, which is this Monday, July 7th, but my sister and I are sharing him. In the cat’s forum his name is a surprise, and I know some of you are in the cat’s forum, but he’s about 8 weeks old and we’re naming him...DAKOTA!!!! His mama, Candy, is the sweetest cat in the WORLD...she’s the only cat I’ve ever met who I trust to never bite me. She just jumps in your lap and purrs like a motor and you can hear her from across the room. She reminds me of the kids in foster homes who are the brightest and nicest and smartest but are chosen last because of their age. She just melted in my arms, and though she loves everyone, the shelter staff were surprised by how well she took to me, and I’m still working on my mom cuz I want her SOOOO much as well as Caesar (future "Dakota").
Here’s Caesar’s link: Caesar

Wow, they must spay/neuter at 1.5 pounds! Most vets won’t do it until 2.5

Anyway, he is adorable! Do you have another kitty at home? If not, I STRONGLY recommend getting two, or getting him and his mom. As someone who has worked in a rescue for several years, I have heard the "single cat syndrome" stories again and again about singly raised kittens. They need the companionship of their litter mates or another cat to teach them what is appropriate and what isn’t. They need something to bite, scratch, stalk, hunt, and pounce. If there isn’t another kitty, that’s all going to be focused on you in the middle of the night. That seems cute when he’s a baby, but as he starts to get older and hasn’t learned not to bite and becomes bossy and more aggressive, it’s not so cute anymore.

Just a thought, and perhaps a good tactic for winning your mom over to the idea of adopting both of them : )

Good luck Jeni!!

Thanks SOOOOOO much Dragongirl!! I can’t WAIT to tell my mom about "Single Cat Syndrome." The feeling of having Candy in my arms and in love with me was like no special feeling I’ve ever felt before!!
And no, the vets don’t spay/neuter until the cats are at least 3 lbs, and he’s only 1.5, so we’ve got a while to go. Of all the kittens (there’s about 15) he’s probably the 3rd or 4th smallest. I want to take Caesar, Candy, his sister Twizzler who is so fragile, his brother Cardigan and his sister who’s name I’m not sure of (It’s like Marigold or Marmalade or something like that with an M). Cardigan made me want to cry. I was the only person who played with him. Apparently everyone else passed him by, and he just sat by his lonesome, so sad. When I picked him up, he looked me in the eye and my heart melted. Everytime I set him down, he was just so determined to get back up on my lap. He is the 2nd smallest, and you can feel his ribs, and his meds made him very tired, but he had the strength, and he had it in his mind that he was going to get back in my arms, no matter what it took. So slowly but surely he climbed up my pants (and you have to take into consideration that I have very long legs--longer than the average 16 year old girl, and I’m 13) and into my arms and would fall asleep as I rocked him. I’m listening to I Gotta Go My Own Way by Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron and thinking about Cardigan and I want him even more than Candy I think. If I had my own house, I’d take Caesar, Candy, Marmalade, Cardigan, and Twizzler all in and spoil them like there’s no tomorrow!!

My mom is being so stupid! I told her about "One cat syndrome" and she said she doesn’t believe it, that she’ll use her own judgement, and that we should be lucky we’ve got ONE. And she said we’re not getting a scratching post/hideout, a bed, or toys. She said in about a week my aunt will be giving my sister a bed and a few toys for the cat for Jaci’s birthday.
I don’t care what my mom says, I have the money, and if she takes us to Petco, I will buy the things Dakota needs (including a carrier).

Jeni, perhaps she will change her mind when your kitten is attacking her all night long! Lol.

It’s a VERY real problem and the reason why every no kill rescue I’ve encountered requires dual adoptions. It always amuses me when someone who’s had a few cats in their life thinks they know everything and doesn’t listen to people running a shelter and dealing with hundreds every day, not just in the building but in foster homes and in adoptive homes. I can’t tell you the number of people who have called and been so grateful to us for making them get two so they could get a decent night’s sleep.

A boy in my grade who works at the shelter, too, told me if you don’t get two, you’ll end up with a paw in your mouth and the taste of fur every morning...he loves his cats Lily and Cosmo but they can be such butt holes!
