Need help deciding breed.... hello :D I am looking to get a dog (or two) well a puppy really :D and yes I am planning to adopt from a shelter if possible... but I need help deciding on a good breed.... so keeping in mind I am aware some of these things just depend on the dog and money is not a factor (like for food or the actual dog itself)....
1. Must have short hair (like great dane short preferably)
2. Must be cocker spaniel size or smaller
3. Not yappy
4. Must get along with children... the dog wouldnt actually come incontact with very many children but I do have a very young son to consider in all this (under a year, will prolly be close by the time I actually get the dog)
5. Must be able to get along with other dogs... my mom has a great dane and my dad has a queensland heeler mix (which I dont expect much from her... queenslands are known for not getting along well with others lol... specially this one)... while the small dog wont be in the same area as the dane I dont want one thats going to see it and pee on the carpet lol... and my grandparents have a mini pin whom this dog will be ineracting with regularly... shes only about 1yr so shes very very hyper.....
6. must be able to keep up with mini pin but also be calm (think lap dog) and not running circles around me at home lol
everything else is pretty well negotiable but im not sure what breeds would be best for me... If you had these limits what kind of dog would you get?
thanks in advance

I think that you should definitely get a min pin as well. After all, they are the "King of Toys!" They are known for being gentle with children, yet energetic, intelligent and inquisitive. Sounds great for you! What is your living situation? (apartment, condo, house with ample yard, etc.).
Keep in mind, though, that most of the dogs will be mixed breeds at the shelter. Just go and see which ones you like best. You won’t choose the dog, the dog will choose you; that’s when you’ll know!
Congrats, good luck, and kudos to you for adopting!

Need help deciding breed.... What about a Beagle type? Low maintenance coat, good size (not too big, not too small), energetic enough to keep up with a min pin and your son, great family dog, friendly, great with kids and other animals, not yappy (maybe a howl :)), loyal, trainable, sturdy and incredibly cute. Though they can be very high energy dogs, with an acre of land and that you seem to have a very active life, it sounds like it would have lots of outlets for all that energy as opposed to being left alone all day and chewing up your house or engaging in other destructive behavior out of boredom.
Of course those are generalizations about the breed and there are variations among individuals.
Kudos for making such a well thought out decision. You’re considering what will fit with your life style, requirements, maintenance, activity etc... So many people fall in love with the cute little puppy and never think of what it will grow up to be and end up bringing it to a shelter when it’s grown and out of control. :( I’m sure whatever you choose will be a perfect match.
Lol.......after reading my list I want to go out and get a Beagle!

Need help deciding breed.... I agree with Turtlemom. A Beagle would make a wonderful companion for you.
You could also go with a corgi or an Italian Greyhound.

Need help deciding breed.... The best thing to do is go into the shelter with your list and talk to an employee there to see whats available . They want you to match up with the right dog for you and your family too. There is usually an adoption process that you go through where they will ask you or have you fill out papers on many of the things that you mentioned .They may have some insight as to what the dog has been through in the past and if it will get along with other dogs and children . I would not come home with a dog the first day especially if you wind up getting an older dog . Take the kids in and spend some time with the dog and see how it responds to you .The breed is not so important as the temperament and train ability of the dog. Each person will be attracted to different types of dogs plus a mixed breed can be just as cute and makes just as nice of a pet as one certain breed . I don’t see how anyone can tell you exactly what breed of dog is right for you . Take your time and look around . Remember this dog will be a part of your family for many years so don’t rush it .
A beagle may be right for you and may not . There are apartments here in Ohio that will not let you have a beagle simply because they tend to bark and howl a lot .Some small breed dogs are yappy and not so good with small children . Each dog is different . Go in ,look around and if you find some thing go back and play with the dog for awhile .Ask about its back ground . Then introduce it slowly to your Dane . Many times a shelter will also take the dog back if for some reason it does not work out .

Need help deciding breed.... I have done some looking at the local shelters and all they really have right now are senior dogs or larger dogs like pit mixes (I cant have an "agressive breed" according to the insurance on the house) but I will definately keep looking it will be at least a few months before I get the dog...
A beagle does sound like a good idea :) I will have to look more into them... I have thought about corgis but they shed too much they dont really have short hair :/.... never did think of an italian greyhound tho lol....

Need help deciding breed.... You might either go to the library or do a search on the dogs breeds your interested in to see if they will fit your life style .Corgis and Jack Russel Terriers are nice size short haired dogs but they need a lot of exercise . Terriers tend to be yappy though . A Boston Terrier is a little larger but not to big . They are not truly a terrier and make good family dogs . A miniature Schnauzer does not usually bark much and I believe that they are hypoallergenic . You might check your local classified adds .Just take your time .Good luck.

Need help deciding breed.... I must say, Corgi’s are an excellent breed to look into, but they need work. They need something to keep them occupied or they can be little terrorists. Beagles make great pets as well.

This may sound a little crazy, but since you’re son will be a little over a year when you get the dog (I think that’s what you said), let him go to the shelter and sit him on the floor and let him gently pat a dog on the back, making sure he doesn’t pull. Obviously you’d have to ask which dogs did better which children, if your humane society conducts temperament tests (ours doesn’t, but small town dogs seem to be lovable, clumsy, gentle giants). He should be part of the decision. At one year old he’s able to distinguish one dog from another. He probably can’t tell you with words, but he’ll probably cry or be afraid of some dogs, and warm up to others. Has he been around dogs regularly?

Need help deciding breed.... Yes he has been around dogs... he has played (well in his own way) with my grandparents mini pin and has been face toface with my moms dane (she was on the other side of the fence to prevent jumping...) and my dads dog whom he is terrified of... but im not sure why... she is the sweetest dog and has never barked around him or anything :( .... but I want something small for sure and none of the shelters around here really have a place I could set him on the floor to meet a dog... its all either outside or in the kennels... which theres no way im going to put my son down in there lol.... I have no idea if they do temperment tests but I do know that they know which dogs are good with other dogs/cats/children etc... so im guessing they do to an extent....
the only corgis I have ever met didnt have really short hair... its was really thick and I would say med... so I definately wont be going with a corgi.... and our local shelter doesnt currently have any small dogs but they might closer to when i really want to get one :D so i will keep looking... we seem to be having a great dane mix boom around here O.o which is weird cause I rarely ever see any danes lol....

Need help deciding breed.... Where are you located? I’d recommend a poodle, but they don’t have those at shelters very often lol. They are energetic but know when to relax, they get along with everyone, they love people, they’re smart and want to be trained, they don’t shed (but do require grooming), and they are generally pretty healthy dogs with few genetic health issues.
Anyway, they do often have poodle mixes or rescued "designer dogs" in shelters because people buy them as puppies from pet stores, backyard breeders, and puppy mills and dump them when they discover that even though cockapoos make cute puppies, they are a lot of work! I’d never buy a designer dog, but I would certainly recommend adopting one from a rescue or shelter.
My other favorite dog is a Bull Mastiff, but I think that’s larger than you wanted to go : )
A beagle sounds like a good fit for you. Just keep in mind how intelligent they are and how much time you’ll need to spend keeping one entertained. And make sure you have a really secure fence lol.

Need help deciding breed.... i reccomend either a beagle or a JRT. quite similar dogs, jrt’s s get the edge in energetics, but that’s not necessarily a good thing. both can make a lot of noise, ie. will bark at passerby’s, beagles with the bellow/howl and jrt’s with a yappy bark...they cant help it, small vocal chords, haha...both need lots of exercise, but despite the big rumor, jacks can be couch potatoes with the right schedule. the biggest difference is that a beagle may be calmer around your young son...be sure that whatever you choose you child proof the puppy, meaning do everything a child may do to it, pull ears, grab tail...nothing to hurt the dog, but you want the dog to know that when these things happen its ok. hope i helped...and didnt just repeat what someone else said.

Need help deciding breed.... yeah I definately dont want a JRT they are not lap dogs at all... well most of them... O.o waaaay too much hyper there lol.... as for the beagle howling that wont be too big an issue nor will barking at strangers.. my dads dog is the same way she barks and people she dont know and howls at sirens and sometimes for no aparent reason lol... so I can deal with that... and no offence to poodle lovers out there I actually think that poodle are very unatractive... they creep me out... unless they are standard poodles which are HUGE lol but those are funny looking too....

Need help deciding breed.... p.s. his back right leg sticks out funny (you can see it in the photo) because he was hit by a car last December and had surgery to repair four fractures in his pelvis (3 others healed on their own) and now he has a big plate and 6 screws holding him together. We like to say he is held together with duct tape : D

Need help deciding breed.... Please consider adoption. Even if you want a pure bred dog, don’t say No yet. 25% of shelter dogs are pure bred. These dogs will otherwise be euthanized. So give them a second chance at a wonderful life.
These are California dogs on the petfinder website. They need new homes, so maybe one of them is the right dog for you. Give them a chance. They will love you for life.
