 Bad news :(

ok, so about a month ago, i adopted a 16 month old rottweiller, not knowing his true history. foolish i know. i was told that he had gotten out once while a maintenance guy was there, and the humane society listed him as a pda, for a 6 month period, which could be wiped if he didn’t reoffend. i was told that the husband was never home and didn’t have time to train him properly, and the wife was extremely pregnant. well i have had this dog, and started his training, and tried to get him listed into my name. i went to the humane society again today, this time armed with a letter from the lady who gave him to me, only to find out that she lied about the pda thing. apparently this dog has a violent history going back to oct ’07. he is known by animal control officers by name, and has attacked them, a lady and child, and other animals in the past. since i have had him, he has attacked and bit my husband and myself when being disciplined. so today i had to make the appoint with the vet.... he goes in monday morning... i did call the former owner and offer him back, only to be told that she was afraid of him too.... wish i had been smart and gotten the real info on him before i adopted him, cause i wouldn’t have....

what a shame, i’m terribly sorry for you and the poor dog. this is what haapens when uneducated people get dogs unfortunatly (not you), it leaves them with all sorts of problems. do you think maybe the dog has been abused? dogs usually only bite in defence. maybe because of his past he lashed out at you when you tried to discipline him. at least he’ll be going to a better place :(

When you say "disciplined him" do you mean you hit him ? It is asham if he is going to be put down . He is still a young dog and could probably make a good pet if professionally trained and for the right person. If you could get professional help you might end up with an excellent dog . If you do not want to try to keep him would you at least consider calling a rescue organization ? I would be glad to help you find the right place for him as well as I am sure others here would too.

Please, please, please cancel the appointment. I really hope I’m not too late!! I seriously think (KNOW) there’s some good somewhere in that dog, and he doesn’t deserve to be put down. That dog is still very young and needs to experience love like all of us. I would check out Skullkeeper’s links, or maybe you can put up with it for a while and write to Victoria Stillwell. If you haven’t heard, It’s Me Or The Dog is coming to the US and she has trained even the most aggressive dogs no one had any hope for. I’m sure she would happy to help a shelter dog in need of a new leash on life!!!!
Good luck,
luv from

 Bad news :(

absolutely not did i hit him, i am talking about telling him no, and telling him to sit. i dont believe in hitting a dog, kids, or anything else. i even called an agression training place in portland or that my vet reccomended. everyone i talked to, said they couldn’t help me, because of his history. i fully believe he was abused, but cant prove it. i have never seen an animal respond to the simple words like no biting, or no chewing, like this one did. the really sad thing is, he was starting to respond to simple commands, like down. i believe there was good in him too, cause i saw it, but unfortunately, after him attacking the neighbors over the weekend, i wan’t given an option. i will have a court date for it too. not sure when yet, have to wait for the info from the prosecuter, and my landlord may even evict me over it.... he was my shadow. there is no doubt in my mind that he loved me, and i love him. i have children and do daycare as well, and all the kids liked him. i will now be monitored for awhile, but may lose my license over it too... i have a great dislike for people who abuse animals and children. i have fostered kids, and have several rescues in my household, including my oldest rott, toby. i am sad and heartbroken over his loss, i waited so long to get him, cause his former owner kept putting me off. i had made arrangements with the vet to get him neutered and to fix his eyes. he had a bad case of cherry eye, that had happened over a year ago. the day after i got him, i took him to the vet and got him some meds and eye drops to help soothe his eyes. he was almost blind in his right eye due to severe cornea damage. i really feel like i let him down....

This is so sad . The eye problems were probably a huge factor in the way he responded to things . Dogs respond to fear . If he had trouble seeing and was frightened then he responded the only way e knew how . Did you call the rescue organizations I listed ?

I love all dogs especially large dogs but I do not think it’s a good idea to have a day care center with several large dogs . You are taking a chance that one of the kids could get injured . I would defiantly have any dog in another area away from the children . You can not watch both kids and dogs every second of the day .

i called several rescues in wa and or. i even talked to an agressive dog trainer in or who told me his group could not help me. i was willing to drive back and forth between seattle and portland for the training if they would have helped me train him. my other 3 dogs are very well trained, and love the kids. they would not hurt them. i only have 2 kids at a time. one is a 2 year old, and the other is a 9 year old. toby, my oldest rott, will let the 2 year old fall asleep on him. even though i have a fenced yard, there is a kennel too. i just have to fix the latch that king broke. the kennel takes up about 1/3 of my yard, which is about 1/3 of an acre. i take the kids and dogs out seperately. the dogs go out to the kennel, then the kids come out, or just the kids, or just the dogs. this is wa and most of the time, it is raining, so no one spends much time outside, except for a couple months in the summer... the kids are here about 5 hours a day, so the majority of my day is devoted to my babies, who go for walks, love to play fetch, go for car rides, and snuggling on the floor or my bed. half the time, i end up on the floor, cause they kick me out of the bed...
