The amstaff is the same as a APBT...only it has differnt conformation then the APBT due to the fact that the APBT can be registred with the uck but not the akc.

This amstaff was created when the AKC wanted to lose the APBT’s association with dogfighting. They changed the APBT registered name to the amstaff as far as the akc goes.

They are the same breed, they just came up with a new name because of what no_glory said. The AKC didn’t want pit bulls in their registry because they didn’t want to associate themselves with dog fighting, so they just came up with another name.

Basically, it’s completely stupid lol.

NO NO NO NO!!!!!! They are not the same breed, not even close. An american stafford shire terrior was one of the breeds used to creating the american pit bull terrior, but they are not the same breed. The stafford shire terrior is of different size, has a different jaw structure, has a different temperment....they are not the same!

And the american staffordshire terrior has been around much longer then the american pit bull terrior, obviously if they were used in creating the breed. So no, the AKC never changed any name, thats a bunch of bull hunky.

Wrong, the APBT came before the AmSTAFF

There are few breeds that have been long documented with the attributes of the American pit bull terrier. This breed has been document all the way back to the middle ages. during those times the pit bull or bandog was used as a hunting or gripping dog. they where not fought yet but they had originated as boar hunters as well as herding dogs..the pit bull was used more commonly during this time as a bulldog..hence where the bull came from in Pit bull...they would heard cattle for butchers gripping the bull by the nose until the butcher could get there to take over. During these times the pit bull was required to be human friendly as they needed to be in order to be controlled as working bull dogs. it was then that the sport of bull bating originated this is where many dogs are let loose on to a bull to kill it. The sport was soon outlawed.(thank god). As that was outlawed the idiots who still needed their fill of killing starting facing off their dogs(dog fighting). At the beginning these dog where still used for there original purpose of hunting and as cattle tamers( as i call them). About 90 years later the u.k.c was created..this is still the only reputable(sp) registry that a person can register their APBT with. The pit bull or bulldog was them renamed the American Pit Bull Terrier. The pit bull terrier was still being bred to be human friendly as even in the fighting ring this breed needed to be handled back then real dog fighting gentleman would cur or kill off any dog that could be a treat to humans as they did not want to run the chance of being bitten by their own dog during a fight. It was when the pit bull migrated to America that is was bred down from the large bull dog..while some strains are kept large (thus creating the American Bulldog) most bulls where sized down as it was becoming more popular as a show dog. Also as well as a few breeder as this time where breeding fighting lines (though still not as popular) these dogs traveled with the pioneers in the early 1900’s. eventually around 1886 dog fighting was starting to be looked down on more as more as this happed dog fighting was outlawed causing it to go under ground. From 1890-1948 the pit bull became a very popular breed and was only used by a small portion of the population as a fighting dog. the dog started to be valued more as a good natured family pet. There are many novels written during this time such as bulldog by max brad written in 1925 and the gas-house pup by R.g Kirk. The pit bull became popular as pets and a mascot. many people who wanted to represent their business or their team as strong would use the pit bull as a mascot. in the early part of the 20th century the pit bull was the perfect family dog as it was hardy and would easily accompany men on their daily walks. as the times changed and the world became more sophisticated (sp) man no longer wanted a dog that was a good natured side kick..they wanted a strong dog that was pure bred thus causing the pit bull to fade out of popularity and the dogs such as Doberman and setters to fade in. thus causing a new era of dog fighting as the pit bull was forgotten about dog fighting was once popular again. many stupid men where breeding to get a game bull dog not a house pet. Thus creating the few lines of pit bull that still exists today..these lines are registered to places that cater to dog fighters. These lines can be recognized as dogs who are nervous, small and hardly recognized as a pure breed at all. The pit bull was then still thankfully bred by a few u.k.c lines that wanted the perfect non-fighting bull dog. in 1980 the pit bull once again gained popularity only this time as a "fad" breed such as the Doberman once was and the American bull dog. During this time a rise was seen on pit bull attacks due to poor bred animals and poorly educated owners. The pit bull will most likely always be associated with the sport of dog fighting but as well as said thousands of times by well educated historians on the pit bull this dog has never been bred to be human aggressive...considering human aggression and animal aggression are two completely different things. The pit bull is still a working dog at heart but in the hands of the wrong people they are forced to participate in dog fights..thankfully a few people are still trying to save the breed and they are doing it well. While this bad rep can never be wiped clean it will hopefully someday be made a little better.

The u.k.c was also created in 1898 by C.Z Bennnett When he wanted to set up a stud book for the bulldog, which back then was what the APBT was called, he was the one who called them American Pit Bull terrier

The akc started registering the american pit bull terrier thirty seven years after the U.K.C when the a.k.c was petitioned by a few breeders of the American Pit Bull Terrier who wished to register their dogs yet avoid the the association of dog fighting the a.k.c opted to open thier stud books to the American Pit Bull Terrier for a time but also decided to change the name of the breed to remove the word pit. In 1936 the AKC recognized the Staffordshire terrier it was one of the first breeds to be accepted by two differnt registries under two differnt names. IN FACT one of the frist dogs to be dual registered was PETE THE PUP from that really old show my gang.

As for the conformation-

The APBT by the U.K.C

Head- Medium length, brick like in shape, skull flat and widest at the ears with predominate cheeks free of wrinkles.

Muzzle- Square Wise and Deep well pronounced jaws displaying strength jaw

A.K.C Amstaff -Head- Medium length, deep through broad skull very pronuced cheek muscles

Muzzle- Medium Length rounded upper side to fall Abruptly below eyes.

As for temperament of either breed there should be no difference as they should both show a ambitious and friendly disposition, neither shall show any human aggression and BOTH while in ring should show no animal aggression.

SO in short if you did not take the time to read the whole thing....the amstaff is the same as the american pit bull terrier and the american pit bull terrier came before the amstaff

Plus a bunch of research and information i’ve picked up in thousands of other places over the years.

You need to be able to comprehend what your reading.

More simply put Pit Bull is a term commonly used to describe several breeds of dog in the Molosser family that were historically used for dog fighting . The breeds most often placed in this category are the American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Two different breeds of dogs.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a cousin of the American Staffordshire Terrier. The UK changed the names so they would not be confused with the American breed.

These are two different breeds of dogs . They are closely related but are different breeds whether you are in the USA or the UK.

Its like a Ball Python and Burmese Python are both Pythons closely related but not at all the same .

Now if you can understand what I just typed then you will see they are two different breeds . As far as misspelling Terrier ,well that’s picking at straws and trying to change the subject. It does not matter we all know what she meant . It is petty and immature to try to change the subject and personally attach some one because they are not only right but disagree with you .

I never have been much of a speller, fortunatly, as a vet tech, spelling isn’t part of my job description. Thats why spell check was invented for microsoft works. I don’t have to spell perfect, especially when my paper still gets it’s point across. Jeesh, haven’t you ever been in school???? As a college first year we did three research papers, one on spaying/Neutering of pets, animal cells, and to select a breed of choice and research it to find every last thing you possibly can about them. My favorite was the animal cell, but the dog breed was titled: " The Almight Vicious Pit Fighters".........I don’t need your approval No_Glory, I know what a Pit Bull is, I know what breeds were used in creating the breed, I know their history, I know their psychology, I know what their proper build should be, I know what makes the breed so unique and powerful.....Like I told you people before, i take a very special interest in this paticular breed.

"The Almighty Vicious Pit Fighter", By the way I wouldn’t always trust wikipedia due to the fact that teenagers are the majority of researchers on that sight.
