 Dog dies due to cop

I saw this on the news a while back and thought you guys would like to talk about it, being that you’re all dog-activists in one way or another. And this story is very uncool.

Click on the video link to see the clip. It’s recorded from the police officer’s car when he pulled the guy over.

Link

The jist of it, if you don’t have volume or generally don’t like videos, is that a guy was speeding to the vet to save his dog from choking. A cop pulled him over and, while the guy panicked and plead for help for 20 minutes, the dog died. Instead of helping, the cop detained him during this time and said, "It’s just a dumb dog, you can get another one."

The dog was a puppy.

And the cop is being sent to more classes on better dealing with emotional situations such as this.

Most people say that the cop handled the situation very wrong and they demanded justice of some variety or another. Others are saying that the cop was just doing his job and that the people shouldn’t have been speeding in the first place. What are your views on the incident?

how insensitive. of course you would speed, i wonder if the policeman would’ve delayed the man if it was a person he was rushing to save. animals are members of the family too. the dumb dog comment really got my back up! he should be sacked

I can expect that the cop pulled the guy over, but 20 minutes? Now that’s ridiculous. You would think that the cop could’ve just followed the guy to the vet to 1. get him through traffic (a police escort) and 2. to make sure that’s where he was going. I can bet you 100% that if that cop had had a dog (I’m betting he doesn’t), it would’ve been a different story. People need to realize that animals are pretty much the basis for our life and give us everything; food, clothing (unfortunately), research prospects, etc. and what to we give them back? notta. That disgusts me, the cop should’ve received more of a punishment than that, he took a valuable life!!!!

I watched it on CNN. That’s so sad . I hope the cop gets disciplined but I doubt it . But I also saw where a local cop saved a puppy from a house fire and resuscitated it .

its sad. but alot of people have that same view "its JUST a dog". obviuosly i dont think that way. my dog is my life, id let sumthing bad happen to me, before i let her get hurt.

another issue with cop killing a dog, is in bc, cops, raided a house they assumed was dealing drugs. the day they raided it, there were multiple cars parked in their parking lot and on the street. wen they raided the house, a rottwieler, came running at them, barking. he was shot and killed. after they killed the dog, the owners, and children came running back ino the house, to find their dog shot.the owners, were in the backyard, giving their kids a birthday party wen the raid started. it turned out all the people coming in and out of the house, was becuz of the childrens birthday party.

Okay everyone has said their opinion from a persons standpoint asa victim the guy is a perp Im stating mine has someone who has been in Law enforcement, let me start off by saying the dog is 3 years old...Not Quite a ’puppy’ but still young second they have people take First aid for humans and they offer first aid for animals, handy skill to have this case in point....

Now the Officer that handled the guy DID follow protocol, and yes he was a bit of a jerk (they are in texas) He said that he would at least let the couple slide for evading..when you see lights and sirens the guy either should have pulleed over immediately or kept driving because he was already screwed at least if he continued to drive he could have made it to the vet even if the officer was ticked off...

Now the guy was driving 100mph and weaving through traffic for those that dont know In Texas on the interstates its typically only 60-65 the guy commited a felony driving over 30mph (technically 20 over is felony) over the speed limit... he was on a cell phone which was irresponsible at a high rate of traffic either have it on speaker phone or hand the phone to your gf but high speed plus cell phone does NOT look promising. and had the cop not pulled them over and they wrecked he would have been held responsible for the accident..Peoples lives are more important then a dogs, had the guy been somewhat rational instead of jumping around screaming and spoke the cop wouldnt have assumed him on drugs and it would have gone a lot quicker, the cop did his job searched the vehicle verified the story and addressed the guy, he made sure they were unarmed and there were no drugs (which are run out of mexico and across the states as well as immigrants) he then got on his radio and informed dispatch about the incident that they were rushing their dog....

The Officer was following protocol, I would have handled it a bit different but with someone flipping out like that guy was doing he could have been a threat the Cop was securing the situation before he proceeded with the ticket...his ’manners’ sucked and I wouldnt have said "its just a dog" Im not that heartless but the cop had a point the guy shouldnt have been going 100mph for an 8mile trip....and IF the guy was on the phone with his vet at the time the vet could have instructed heimlich or CPR

I Love Dogs I love mine I am a BIG animal lover but
Evasion
Reckless Driving
risking the lives of other motorists
excessive speeding (Just so you know even an emergency vehicle with someone dying in the back by law is ONLY allowed 10 miles over the speed limit to and from a call WITH lights flashing and this guy was going 40 over close to)why should a civilian be allowed to break the law when an ambulance or firetruck cannot??
endangering the life of the cop....

the guy displayed symptoms of drug induced or alcohal induced High... the Cop was serving and protecting had the guy ONLY been going 10-15 over....and had been rational no squealing and waving his arms the cop would have likely not been as brash... I dont agree with the ticket being waived but due to politics the Chief has to issue some form of punishment on the Officer which I feel is wrong. and while most say "Poor dog" and "Poor people" you dont see the potential rammifications of th situation had the man wrecked..Im sorry my life nor anyone elses is less important then an animal... I wont swerve to hit (I will slow and try to stop) I wont speed to get my pets to the vet I will go 10 over or so but thats the extent, I abide the law and dont endanger myself or others even for a beloved family pet.. the interview with the couple was unfair to the cop as well the people still failed to see where THEY were wrong it takes two to argue sure but the man was in the wrong

I agree the guy should have had a living human in the car to warrant going that fast and even then could have gotten a police escort and slowed the speed down... Im sorry but the driver was in the wrong 100% and think on this, had the guy gone the speed limit.. by the time the cop finished writing the ticket...he would have been at the vet clinic.....did anyone take that into consideration? what you dont realize is what state of mind would you have been in if you as the cop had to chase someone 100mph down an interstate worried for other drivers not knowing what the issue was (ie emergancy were they evading did they rob a bank was someone hurt?) did you not think the cop didnt have adrenaline??

If it had been me....I would have drove them to the vet myself..then I would have arrested the guy, and I am sure most of you will think me cruel and heartless (At least I would have gotten the dog there) but the man broke several laws and Im sorry the Man should be punished the whole speeding was the cause for the dog dying not the officer delaying them I stand with the officer on this one, do I feel bad the dog died?? yes, my condolences..but do I feel bad for the couple?? No I think they got off easy....If I were the cop when the guy asked me what the hell my problem was I would NOT have waived the evasion...Again I would escort them and as soonas they were there arrested him, 12-24 in a cell would have situated that "what the h*ll is your problem"

just goes to show do the speed limit...had they done that the dog would have lived or if they hadnt done excessive speeding would likely not have been pulled over... I know some of you are going to disagree but this is from the otherside of the fence....

could the cop use more tact?? yes...but the guy shouldnt have been doing what he was doing....

This is cruel... The policeman said " If there was a child in there, then I would understand, but a god ****** dog?!" Well, I don’t know about some other people, but I treat my dogs like my babies. I knew them since I was a kid. Poor dog. Died choking on a side of a road. It makes me very mad and sad.

Actually he said "If your driving like that you best have an actual child in the vehicle dying and not a D*mn dog" regardless you fail to see where the driver is wrong dog dying or not thats no reason to risk your own life and the lives of others.. I still stand by my point if the guy had been going the speedlimit he would have gotten to the vet the dog would not have died and this would not be an issue....

this goes to show take a pet first aid course... if your pets are family and THAT important then a few hours out of your day to learn CPR heimlich and first aid for your dog should not be anything at all right? I mean if you would be willing to jeopardize your life and others for the sake of your pet.. then what is a few Hours out of your life so that similar instances cannot be repeated?

sure he lacked a lil tact but the officer was in the right on this one for pulling the guy over and questioning while trying to calm the guy down

Actually I have seen a video taken from a dash cam where this elderly man was extremely speeding. The cop pulled him over and told him he needed to slow down and even made him get out of the car. The elderly man got out and pleaded with the cop to escort him to the hospital because his wife was have a HEART-ATTACK! The cop told him he couldn’t do that. He said the gentleman should have called an ambulance. Then the op proceeded to run the mans registration and license, write the man a ticket and tell him he better do the speed limit or he would go to jail. All the while the man was pleading and begging the op to help him. Needless to say the wife died, the gentleman sued the cop, and the cop was released from the force due to "unrelated events".

I do think the cop was right in attempting to do his job, HOWEVER he could have aided in escorting the man to the vet with his dog and then wrote whatever citations there. I have heard of officers doing this and actually had one escort me home to write me a ticket so I could get my son off the bus in time. He ended up giving me a warning and told me to watch my time more carefully and he was right of course. In this instance though, the cop could have had a heart though. He could have followed him in and ran the license, wrote whatever citations, etc...

that’s what pisses me off about cops. my husband is a cop and it’s because of ones like that that give them a bad name. if it had been my husband that pulled him over he would have personally escorted the guy to the vet!!!! that’s generally what they do in emergency situations where people are speeding. they drive in front of them with their lights on to safely escort that person to wherever they are going. that’s what should’ve been done.
