Do you think its worth it?

Hello I wanted to enter my dog in the FFA obidience competition next april. But my parents said it wouldnt be worth it becuse we have to get a lot of things before I can take her. (training collar, some vacinations, crate, ect) I have enough money to get the items but my parents say my dog wouldnt like it and it wouldnt be worth it to take her. What do you guys think? Would a dog be unhappy if entered in a compitition?

well if you are planning on entering her in more, you have to start somewhere.
Some dogs are perfectly fine, for others it takes some more time.
Maybe practice with your dog first and see how she responds.
I wouldn’t make any final answers until you know that she will be comfortable and behave.

I wasnt planning on entering her into more. How would I practice with her to see if she likes it?

If she’s going to retire after one show, I don’t see the point.
I personally think dogs lead happier lives as companion best friends, but that is for the dog to judge, so if the dog’s happy, go for it. It’s all about the two of yours’ happiness.

It depends on the dog and on you. You will need to start training her now and getting her use to a crate , the noises and other dogs being close to her . It could be a lot of hard work for both of you but you may really enjoy it . It depends on how much you want to do this . If your parents see you working with your dog and that your dedicated to doing this they will probably change their minds . Find out exactly what the test will be , get the crate and start training now . You should have a crate anyways in case you would need it in the future for traveling or emergencies .
If you don’t try you will always wonder if it was some thing you would enjoy . Like the other poster stated , you have to start some where . In the very least you would have spent quality time with your dog and maybe thought her some new tricks .

Yes I have been training her since last year. She already knows pretty much everything. I will have to work on the crate. Although it is one show there is a point in it. If I enter this show and win or even possibly get into the top ten, It could really look good on a resume or college application. Also I only have this one chance for as far as I know I can only do this through my animal management class. I can schedule her as a play date in my class and see how well she does in the noise and around the other dogs. Thanks everyone for you input. If lucky does OK around the other dogs I’m going to try and do the obedience contest.

The way I see it is its a good start to see if you at least would like it...and give your dog a shot. Most people get this idea showing is fun and then they try it once and realize there is too much effort and work involved. My Sister and I are like that, I have been showing horses since I was 5-6 years old I showed once and loved it and the dicipline and found it worth it (Paid for a LOT of education) where as my sister tried one show and never did it again... dogs are the same way it costs to enter you have to take proper dieting exercise and the training time into consideration... I use the whole equine thing (Its helped a lot) to get into Equestrian teams for college scholarships and more.. they offer college scholarships with a lot of different shows Ive shown FFA and 4-H growing up.. I personally hink its worth it and support your decision but it isnt for us to decide if its worth it, its for you to decide I dont think how one time to see what you think is a waste...you can always advance..you may like it or you may not but if your dog seems to take to it i dont see why you wouldnt try to enter her in more....good luck with whatever choice you pick
