Im just being responsible :) ok so i took my dog to the store with me so i didnt have to ride by myself. i got out left the car running with the ac on high and took a spare set of keys and locked her in the car. with it on. ok so i went into to cash my check and i was buying laundry detergent in the line and a cop comes on and says something and the name christoper was in it. i looked at her and didnt think anything of it. me and the cashier and the bagger was like she needs to speak up no one can hear her very well. so i walked out to the car and got in. was giving dezi kisses for being good. and this louc dummy knock comes on my window. it was the pig cop from inside. she says uh did you not hear me page the registered owned of a yellow suzuki. i was like uh no i heard you page someone but i was talking to the cashier and didnt hear the whole page. she said well you looked right at me and ignored me and kept on walking. i was like well i didnt hear you. thinking to myself me and no one else. so she was like you kow you can get a 91.00 ticket for running you car with no one in it. i was like uh no. i had the car on for the dog so she wouldnt burn up. i though i was doing a good thing(saying to myself) i was like i didnt know. im sorry.. wel if your car gets stolen and the keys are in it running your insuance wont pay for anything, i said well i dont really care its paid off anyway and i’m not worried. think to myself who the hell is going to try to steal a car whit a crazy dummy dog in it. for all of you who know about dezi :). i told the cop well i had the car on for the dig i didnt want her to be hot. she was like well you shouldnt have brought her it was a bad idea and its not my(the cop) responsibility if you bring your dog. i was like oh so sorry. then she said well now you know dont do it again. and marched off. i was like wtf she is supposed to be inside publix (store)watching for theives... all im doing is trying not to let dezi burn up. what i wanna know is how the hell she knew my car was running. as far as i know she was inside the store. i didnt see her outside. she obviously saw me outside before i went into the store. why wait for me to do all my stuff and then cause a scene when i left the store.
whatever i would have paid the ticket because its my dog she is more important to me than the stupid car :)

You were being responsible by letting the dog cool off. However, I would kind of have to agree with the cop and leave Dezi home. Some people would realize she’s a goofball, but many people would love to steal a suzuki with a dog inside that they could potentially sell. I’m not trying to start an argument or be mean, I just wanted to point out that that is a dangerous situation.

thieves dont steal vehicles with animals or children in them. the same reason, why theives dont brake into homes wen they kno there is a gaurd dog, or someone is home. u’d have to be pretty stupid,or out of it, to jack a car, with a dog in it.

I’m just being responsible :) It is actually illegal to let your car run without a dog inside . People will some times warm up their cars in the winter by turning the heater on then go back inside till it warms up. You can get a ticket because it does tempt . people to steal the car .I think it is very irresponsible to leave a dog in the car with it running . The dog could knock the gear shift and actually wreck the car . The car could stall out and then the dog would over heat . Lots of things could happen. Sounds like you have a problem with authority figures and the laws . Laws are made to protect people and property. Also sounds like you are lucky to get off with just a warning .

If you would a turned the car off the cop probably would a fined u for animal abuse...

I’m just being responsible :) Would you leave a baby or small child in a running car too ? If not ,then why would you take a chance with your dog ? I love my animals just like children so I agree that it is dangerous and irresponsible to leave either alone in a car ,under any circumstances . Evidently so does most of the people in the USA or we would not have such laws .

I’m just being responsible :) first, kids in a car and dogs are completly different matter. one, kids can get kidnapped. a dog wont. also i see all summer, and even winter people leaving their dogs in locked cars without heat,or air conditioning. now thats IRRESPONSABLE! also people walk around with their little dogs in pureses, and dont walk them, throw them outside in really hot weather, omg, i could go on forever about wat people do to their dogs, and even not wanting to hurt them, just not paying attention, their harming their dogs.
dogs like cr rides, and like to hang with their owners,do it responbly, and there isnt a problem. i meen whats the dog gunna do,turn the ac off,and drive away. i dont think so plus ur dog is a natural car alarm.lol

I’m just being responsible :) you know I dont want to start anything but I hafta say for once I actually agree whole heartedly with skullkeeper on this one.... and people DO and WILL steal a car with a dog in it... unless its literally trying to kill you they will still try.... same thing with kids (not that any of us would leave kids unattended im sure) because with dogs and kids as sad as it is there is always a market for them... someone some where will buy the dog or the kid.... and there have been cases of people leaving their dogs in cars and the dog knocking the gear and having the car roll backwards into traffic or other cars... so I would consider myself lucky not to get a ticket or loose my car... IMO that is irresponsible and given the fact you can drive im sure your big enough of a person to deal with a lonely trip to a store... again im not trying to start anything just wanted to voice my opinion on this

I’m just being responsible :) I leave my dog in the car with it running all the time. I don’t see a problem with it as long as you have the AC on. Of course i’m not worried about someone stealing my dog or my car when shes in it since she is a HUGE german shepherd that is trained in personal protection. Anyone stupid enough to try to mess with a personal protection dog (and my baby) deserves to get ripped apart by my dog and punched in the face by me.
I never new leaving your car running was against the law. I always leave my car running and never got introuble for it. Weird....

Now, I’m not trying to start anything here either, but just because you CAN leave your dog in an unlocked car doesn’t mean you SHOULD. Yeah, Erica, your dog may be trained, but that doesn’t mean it’s responsible, because it’s not. Even if you have insurance, like one of the other posters said, your dog could knock the gear shift, or what it there’s that one in a million person your dog doesn’t attack? And I know it’s scary, but the potential robber could knock a dog out in a heatbeat (I know it’s scary). There will always be dishonest and mean people in the world, and I will do whatever it takes to stay away from that. If something happens, I honestly can’t feel sorry for you.
I’m not being the mean person here, but honestly it offended me a little when the OP said "I new I could count on you guys." Don’t be mad at us, you posted it, so by posting it you’re saying you’re open to comments, and if I can prevent something, I’m not afraid to speak my mind.

I’m just being responsible :) I think you took my post wrong . I meant that you should not leave a dog in a car while it is running. Now if its cool enough like in the fall or early spring and you crack a couple of windows ,lock the doors , then I think its fine to leave them in the car for short periods . Just never in hot weather or extreme cold .

I’m just being responsible :) Jeni,
I am guessing you are really young. I see nothing wrong with keeping a dog in a car. My car is a stick shift and in order to move the shift you have to turn the shift handle first which the dog is incapable of doing. My dog was a k-9 police officer for 3 years until he got hurt by jumping off a 8ft wall. My dog still does protection training. This dog will not just sit their while the car is being broke into or stolen. This is her JOB to protect her property and owner. You obviously don’t understand what a protection dog does. There is no "one in a million" this dog will bite if she feels her property or owner is in danger.
I don’t think it is that simple to knock out a 95lb German shepherd dog. Not even a drunk guy with a gun was brave enough to shoot her (when we were on call for the police department). She took him down in less than two seconds. It says right on my car (a sticker) " k-9 police dog" with a picture of my dog on the side. NO ONE is stupid enough to end my car when she is in there. I guarantee nothing will happen. Please little girl do a little research before saying things. I am not trying to be mean, Just telling you what she was trained to do for a few years so she will do her job. There is no doubt in my mind that she will do her job.
Have a nice day,
Erica.

I’m just being responsible :) Nothing wrong with leaving the dog in the car with it running, unless you dog is smart enough to push the brake pedal then put it in drive nothing can happen. All newer cars have a shift interlock so that the brake pedal has to be depressed to shift in to gear, that would be one tallented dog to pull that off!It it does it can probably drive too so no worries!
If you have a crazy dog that runs around the car like a nut it may be a bad idea, but otherwise It’s pretty safe.Been doing it for years.

Im just being responsible :) ok em-jay, obviously you haven’t watched the news lately or read the paper lately. people don’t care if you have an animal or children in the car, some people will just kill whoever is in the car, or dump it on the side of the road. the first message ticks me off first of all because my husband is a cop. so by the way, there may be other cops on this forum. think next time before you say any derogatory names like pig. my husband is on the narcotics division, but has done patrol in his time also. i do think it was irresponsible to leave your dog in a running car, boy what a temptation. the cop is right in the sense of your insurance won’t pay for it because that was your fault. i know i’m guilty of running my car in the winter in the morning for about 10 minutes before i drive to work, but i never leave my animals in there. people where i live get arrested immediately if they leave a child or a pet in a vehicle, running or not. there’s too many perverts or thieves in this world to be that irresponsible. just yesterday my nephews 14 year old friend molested my 3 year old niece!!!! so needless to say i’m still a little on the edge about being responsible!!!! there’s no room for error in this world with your pets or children.
sorry for sounding rude...not trying to argue or anything...just saying don’t bash cops(think of where the world would be without them). and never say it’s okay to leave a child unattended.

I don’t think it’s irresponsible to leave a dog in a car, unless it’s extremely hot and humid outside.
You should never leave a car running in a random parking lot. It’s dangerous and unsafe. I’m quite shocked to hear that you left your dog inside while it was running! That’s an accident waiting to happen! I would never recommend it again!
You should be thankful that their are police officers who actually do their jobs.
Also, I wanted to ask. Are you at all capable of using periods and puncuations?

Im just being responsible :) Are you serious? Do you really need me to explain it to you?
As Skullkeeper already stated, the dog could somehow manage to shift the vehicle’s gear. It seems unlikely, but it’s possible. I had a friend who was driving with her cat, Simon. She didn’t keep Simon in a kennel, so he was running loose. He managed to put her car into reverse as she was driving down the freeway. She didn’t get into an accident, luckily. So, it can happen, especially when you’re dealing with a big, clumbsy dog.
Any one who owns a vehicle should know it’s dangerous to leave a running car in a random parking lot. Any one who does this is asking for someone to steal their vehicle. Seriously. If you were to leave a car running at Walmart, Fry’s, Safe Way, Fred Meyer’s, or Albertson’s for an extended period of time, you’d probably get it stolen.
I can give you more examples if you need them.

What if you have a gate so it is confined away from the drivers compartment?
If It’s done safely It’s not bad.

its never safe if you cannot see your animal or reach them quickly while able to see them. people are mean and uncaring and dont care if there is an animal in the car if they want to steal it. the world is not a trustable place, and if you do something like leave an animal unattended in a parking lot, with the car either on or off, you are extremely naive.
