 Why is it...

Well in some cases its because of the way they were raised.... like the top pic the dog appears to have had its ears altered and it may be more muscular due to being trained like that in some cases they hang tires or heavy chains around the dogs neck to strengthen the muscles.... but the bottom pic looks to be of an 100% natural dog... but I suppose some of it could be genetics....

 Why is it...

Those two APBTs are from different families and therefore have different genes that give different muscle masses. It’s possible that the first photo is an American Staffordshire Terrier also who has the ears cropped.

Responsible owners do NOT hang chains or weights of any kind from the neck. Only irresponsible owners would abuse their dog in that manner.

American Pitbull Terriers are a fantastic breed as well as the AST. They do require a lot though so please research and talk to experienced owners prior to getting one. Also be sure to check the shelters around your area to see if there are any that need a good home.

 Why is it...

The American Pit Bull Terrier doesn’t have very specific breed standards. If I’m not mistaken, the AKC no longer recognizes the breed (they changed the name to the American Staffordshire Terrier), but it is certainly still one of the most popular breeds of dog in the country.

Different breeders breed them to look differently. You can breed only APBT dogs and just select the stockier, more muscular dogs to breed and end up with a line of dogs that all look like the shorter, muscular one in the first picture, or you can stick to the dog’s normal standards and breed selectively to end up with a line of dogs that all look like the dog in the second photo. Another difference is that the first dog has his ears cropped and the second dog does not. I do not believe in ear cropping and think it’s a pointless and ridiculous thing to do now (it originally was done to prevent a hunting or fighting dog’s ears from being caught on bushes/brush or being damaged while hunting, etc.).

If you want a pit bull, make sure to do a LOT and I mean a LOT of research. This is an extremely intelligent, active breed and the training, exercise, and careful socialization needed are not to be taken lightly. These dogs were originally bred to fight. They make wonderful pets -- but you have to be willing to do the work involved to end up with the dog you want.

Watch the movie "The American Pit Bull", you can probably rent it any any video store. It’s a really great movie that basically goes into the history of the dog and how it has evolved into what it is today. It shows how much training should be involved in owning a dog of this breed and how important it is to work hard with these dogs and give them lots of positive training and socialization as much as possible.

The worst thing you can do is just assume that pit bulls are like any other dog and get one just for fun or because you feel sorry for them. You won’t be doing a shelter dog any favors by adopting him if you don’t fully understand how much work it will be to properly care for him. They are extremely smart, fun, wonderful dogs, and would be an excellent choice for a new pet, but go into it with your eyes open and be ready and willing to learn as much as possible.

Sign up for obedience classes! No matter how old your new pet is or how well he is already trained, obedience classes are a good, fun, constructive way for your dog to learn and be social in a positive way. The worst thing you can do to a pit is leave him tied up or left in a house or yard all day long.

That said, don’t let anyone turn you off to the breed. It’s one of my top favorite breeds and I love pits a TON, but I also will not be getting one of my own until I have a house with a fenced yard, a lot of time to devote, and my toy poodle has passed away : (
