... fecal matter does not have nutritional value to a dog, it is bad for them and it is a habit that needs to be broken. Dogs that do this do it for several reasons ... 1) they picked up the habit from their mother when they were with their litter 2) they were taken away from their mother too soon to learn not to do it 3) the food they are eating has poor nutritional value and basically comes out smelling the same way it did when it came in so the dog eats it again ... etc. etc. The reasons are numerous, but the result is the same. It is something that dogs should not do and they need to be stopped from doing it. One of the easiest things to do is feed your dog pineapple. It makes it taste horrific (as if it did not already) and will often discourage it. Another thing you could do is change the food they are on to a more nutritionally sound one and feed it to them in portions as opposed to one big bowl. Some dogs wolf their food down so quickly that they hardly taste any of it and that could encourage eating feces.

it’s really nothing to worry about. sometimes they eat so fast it comes out almost the same as it goes in. if you want them to stop I hear if you put a little pineapple juice on their food, it will make their poop less appetizing.

that was a really ignorant comment to make that it’s nothing to worry about. sorry to offend you but i’m a vet tech and my vet says it will cause stomach infections. it is not good for them at all. they make cheap medicines to fix that problem. contact your vet. it can cause more health problems than you think. if it is the case where it’s coming out almost the same it went in then there’s a problem as well. if the dog is eating too fast, that’s not good. especially in big dogs as it can cause bloat...which is deadly. if the dog is eating it for the nutrients then it means you are feeding a crappy dog food. make sure that the food isn’t some cheap stuff you buy from walmart because the protein in those foods are mostly plant protein. dogs can’t digest plant protein so then you see like the big elephant piles in the backyard. this problem is called cophrophagia. as long as your dog is only eating its own poop, it is VERY easy to fix. and also make sure that if you catch the dog doing it, discourage the dog from the behavior. it is no healthier for a dog to eat poop than it is for us.
