 I’m sooo bad!!

okay, so i have 3 dogs now. i have gunner, 3 years old, germ shep mix. i have megan, 5 years old, pit mix, and now i have nina, a 4 month old chihuahua. my two big dogs that i have are trained, especially gunner. i have had gunner since 6 weeks old and he knows all the tricks in the book, he will even heel off leash. megan i got when she was two years old and her tricks are secluded to sit, lay, and roll over. she also knows how to heel as well. but then there’s nina.....THE SPOILED ONE!!! i got nina when she was six weeks old and she has been the only ’pure bred’ dog that i’ve ever actually purchased. she is four months old now and doesn’t even know how to walk on a leash!!! i’m such a bad mommy! i’m also a dog trainer, which makes this even more ironic. i know that small dogs tend to get spoiled more than big dogs in the sense of not being trained, or having rules and boundaries. i’ve watched the dog whisperer enough to know that the problem with most small dogs is that the owners don’t give them discipline like big dogs. well...she gets disciplined...just not trained. lol!! i know how bad it is. i have walked her on a leash a few times before, but it of course didn’t go very well. i’m starting to think maybe i’m slacking with her because it’s almost like a relief. i train dogs all the time. i’m a vet tech so i have to deal with bad dogs on a daily basis. i have clients call me and ask my advice on a weekly basis. i know all the rules, you don’t treat a small dog any different than a big dog. trust me i know all the rules, i’m just not following them. of course she gets all of her medical care. she has finally been crate trained, and is somewhat house trained now as long as you take her outside enough during the day. i stress soooo much over training dogs; my dogs, my clients dogs, the dogs at work... that it’s such a relief to not have to work on training a dog. i know it’s horrible and i should at least start working on the command sit with her, but it’s like i’m almost rebelling. kind of selfish i know. i stay stressed over my dogs behavior soooo much, it’s such a calming sensation to not have to worry about proper training. of course i use the excuse to my friends that "oh, she’s such a small baby, and she’s soo spoiled" but i really know that i need to be working with her.

just wondering, how many of you have dogs that are spoiled. not spoiled in the sense that the dog has luxuries like treats and toys, but in the sense like the dog isn’t really trained and you never worked on training with the dog? i know i’m a bad mommy for not doing it. don’t get me wrong...i have worked with her a lot on aggression. she tried to eat me at six weeks old the first time i tried to clean her ears out. i now can bathe her, cut her nails, clean her ears, or do anything to her that i couldn’t do before. i’m just talking about simple commands like sit, and walking on a leash.

No never had a spoilt dog apart from them owning more toys than the local chain pet store never spoilt to me a dog is a dog regardless of its breed/size they all get treated the same and i dont take no poo from any dog it needs to be well disaplined and behaved before i like it and if not well it gets a whole load of training cause i do not like difmgs running riot, bouncing around, constantly at your feet when you move as if they are about to miss something let alone food orientation and just ill behaved manners in general

Lol you are falling to the mummy cuddling stage with this little dog it is going to be in your purse/handbag next lol am just kidding :)

lol!!! no, i’m definitely not hitting the purse/handbag phase for sure. i don’t believe in all that crap. okay, i guess let me define my version of spoiled. i NEVER mean basic discipline when i say that. i have worked with her since she was 6 weeks old on discipline. she was somewhat aggressive when it came to cleaning her ears, and handling her in certain ways. i worked hard on that and she lets me do anything to her now. i have walked her on a leash a couple of times, but it’s really my fault because when i take my dogs for a walk, i’m usually in an exercise mode and i know i wouldn’t get anything done with her, so just my other dogs get to go. i have managed to crate train her, house train her (after 4 months!), and make her mind. she knows what "no" means.
basically, every dog i’ve had knows how to do tricks. i’m always teaching them how to roll over, heel off leash, speak, etc. she doesn’t know any of that. also, she’s allowed on the couch where as the other dogs are only allowed in the bed. the only real thing that i know i need to work on with her is sit, stay, and how to properly walk on a leash. i’m such a bad mommy. i have to say she gets in trouble more than the others do, but she’s still learning also.

okay, i’ve convinced myself, i’m going to start the leash training tomorrow. it aggrivates me SOO bad when clients bring their dogs to me at work and the dog has no clue what a leash is or how to walk on one and i don’t want to be one of those people. i do believe in a dog walking on a leash no matter how small it is. and i mean heeling on a leash. none of that walking in front of me crap, lol!

i think my problem is i work with so many dogs on a daily basis (mine included) that when i got her it was like i just rebelled. it was like i just said, oh well, i don’t care. but i know that’s not the right attitude.

Haha i am glad you are not grabbing your handbag/purse and teaching him/her to stay in it :)

Ah no its my bad i thought you meant you never done basic training with her i was surprised you of all people but now i no i read it wrong :)
As you say she is getting into more trouble than your other dogs but she is still a baby and well you will no yourself babys need constant telling off until they learn not to do it soperhaps she is still in this "lets try and push my luck as much as possible" stage
I have never had a dog which does not know what a leash is that would really annoy me i think same as watching Dog whisperer and they are scared of a leash that would aggravate me apart from people leashes are dogs best friend too they mean walkies haha
Im sure you will be fine just remeber she is still a baby still learning some breeds and dogs are slower than others and some aresuper speedy learners

you’re right. i have found that smaller breeds learn slower than larger breeds. i’m sure there are exceptions, but that’s what i’ve seen. well you’ll be glad that i took her on her first walk...like i said i was going to, lol! i have this cute pink retractable leash for her. (i know...that’s almost as bad as the handbag). i am all about the dog whisperer. i mean my other dogs will heel off leash. i can’t quite teach her how to heel until she gets used to a leash though. so there was a lot of dragging, and coaxing just to get her out of the driveway, lol. but once we were on the road i hardly had to correct her at all. she never walked in front of me. she pretty much stayed behind me. i think that’s because she is an EXTREMELY submissive dog. whenever anyone (even me) goes to pick her up she tucks her tail. i know she’s never been abused because i’ve had her since 6 weeks old. well, hopefully i can get her out of her shy stage.

 I’m sooo bad!!

i’m taking her to the pet store today. our local pet store is where i do a LOT of training with my gsd mix. everyone there knows me, lol. so i think it will be good socialization for her and more practice walking on a leash. i hope all goes well. the last time i took her on a car ride to the vet she got car sick. i don’t want her to be nervous in the car. i’ve never had a dog that doesn’t like a car ride, so we will have to work through that.

 I’m sooo bad!!

okay, so my husband and i had to run all over the place today to pay a bunch of bills. we also had to go to the petstore and pick up more dog food, reptile bulbs, etc. so i decided to take her on the whole trip with us. she sat in my lap for the whole car ride and i think that made her feel more comfortable about the car. she never got sick, or even drooled like she did last time. i even took her in with me to pay my car insurance, lol! when i got out of the car at the pet store it was hell trying to get her to actually walk in. i had to halfway drag her in the door. once she was in she walked on the leash fine. she got pretty freaked out everytime a buggy passed by, lol! but i think we had a good experience with her meeting new people and seeing new places. i definitely like the fact of having dogs that i can take with me places. my other two can go with me anywhere, and they’re 40lbs and 80lbs. so if i can’t take a 4lbs dog with me, then there’s a problem, lol! i just had to stop being lazy about it and put myself to work with exposing her to all these things. after my first message i sent you i started feeling really guilty that my other dogs have been able to experience EVERYTHING. they actually like going to work with mommy, even though it’s the vet. i don’t want to have a scared fearful dog because that wouldn’t be fair to her. i know people tend to spoil the little rat dogs, and so i have vowed that she won’t be spoiled (of course except for pretty collars, leashes, and whichever stuffed animal she picks out at the pet store lol). i know she needs to be treated the same. so i guess my conversation with you has been a good one. you have snapped me back into reality, so thanks!

yes, nina couldn’t make up her mind on a squeaky turtle, or a squeaky dog. she finally picked the squeaky dog, lol! it is the same brand and soft material as her stuffed elephant. the elephant has been taken over by my pit mix, so she had to get another one. dogs are sooo funny.

Ah thats really cute Nelly used to wash her teddy bear we got at one of the festivals we have in the village she would wash it that much the fur would wear away in patches and the fur that was left was either horrible looking with slobber on or is just about dissapearing but she would not allow this bear to be replaced im sure you will know what i mean with your Pit

Lol....my experience is that small breeds are so much easier to "spoil" (not train properly) because even when full grown, they can be scooped up in your arms to get them out of trouble!

I’ve been guilty of the same. The first small breed pup I had got away with murder because he was so darn cute! After all....an overly protective Chihuahua is just too funny (until his teeth hit an ankle!) But an overly protective GSD is dangerous, so we realize that fact and make sure (with proper training) the large breed will be a good, calm dog when they are full grown while we let the small breed run amok to terrorize the world because it’s easier to handle!

The fact that your little guy lets you handle him is good. Mine would to, but he never overcame the need to protect his favorite human in his home, though outside the house he was a sweetheart.

Keep working on the walks and socialization and your little guy will be good. Just remember.... little dogs think they’re big dogs in little bodies!

I like your point :)

However if i had a little dog i personally would let it defendbitself so it would learn a lesson call me horrid but like larger dog it needs to learn the same lol
Like if Virus got into a tuff with any of the local dogs if he was protective i would let him get sorted out an learn a lesson but then again that wouldnt happen here he is a lovely laid back friendly dog only the other dogs are afraid of him they turn on there back and are submissive and pee themselves or they cower whilst sitting down then pee themselves and that is evan when Virus is play bowing (you know that bouncing around they do with the fron down and rear end is touching the sky) with a toy or not they are just scared of him but hey what you gonna do?
