 Adopting a PitBull-x

Hello, i have been visiting the local shelter recently and i saw this great pitbull Mix. I brought in my little dog to meet him and they got along well. But sense the pitbull was so excited because it finally got to go outside for a short moment he didnt really listen to me or pay attention when i called it. It did fetch a ball or two when i tossed it. But how hard is it to get a 8month old dog to listen and be loyal? I never adopted such an old dog how is it like when i bring it home? will it realize that im his owner?

I not long ago got a female APBT and despite she is 9weeks she is head strong, stubborn, bundle of energy, vocal, likes to try and rule the roost although she knows she isn going to get anywhere, attempts to be demanding for attention but it doesnt work but if you can put up with that go ahead get him!
With the loyalty it is the same as when you bring your tiny puppy home from a breeder or someones dog that accidently had a litter you have to build up that trust for him to become loyal i find that when i have gotrlten a shelter dogs its for training - trick and obidience and loyality are like having a puppy all the dog knows is it life before you take it so it could of been a rotten hell hole or it could have been something simple a wonderful dog but the human relationship broke up and couldnt decide on who would have Rover you just need to have time and patience dont rush things

Also whenever getting any dog breed you must ask yourself these why do i want this breed? Am i wanting this breed to fit into a image weather its toughie or posh? Can i see to ALL of its needs? Have i the time to see its behaviour problems if its a rescue and if it has any? Does it get on fine with dogs of all sizes, cats, small animals, kids, old people, men, women, white or black people evan if i dont have any of these rhings and for the safety of others?

Well its been at the shelter for 5 months, so i think thats all it knows right now. I just want him to trust me when i bring it home. What is the best way to do that. take him on walks? also what is the first command i should teach him, and when should i start training.

Well how did you get your other dogs to trust you? Walks, attention, training, feeding, grooming everuthing you do with your dog makes you bong weather you realize it

plus dont get him if you just feel sorry as he has been there for 5month you should ask yourself can you see to his needs and care before taking on such a strong dominant breed as if you dont he will just wind back there

The age of a dog will really not matter at how you will bond or form a relationship. I run a pit bull rescue, and often adopt out older dogs - older being 3+ yrs old. I rescued one of my personal dogs as an adult, between 2-4 yrs old. He’s now been with me close to 4 years. He’s a pit bull and one of the best dogs I’ve ever owned. He had NO manners when he came to me, but did very well with training classes (I’m also a dog trainer) and now he’s a certified therapy dog.

All I’m trying to say is if you adopt the dog, make sure you enlist the help of dog trainer, or enroll in a training class. Don’t let some poor behavior in a shelter make you shy away from saving this dogs life.

Good on you for wanting to adopt a pit bull (mix!) from a shelter. They are wonderful dogs and are truly thankful to those who put the time & effort into helping them blossom into well behaved, loved companions.
