 My Puppy doesnt stop eating

Hello! i just got a puppy and i feed him 3 times a day, he’s a pitbull terrier. I feed him a little more than a cup of Purina 1 healthy puppy formula a sesion, but it just seems like he’s an empty hole! I’m feeding him in small portions so he doesn’t stuff it all down and bloat or have an upset stomach. But should i feed him until he just stops eating? What did you guys do with your dogs. He never stops lol

My dogs get 3 cups a day. 1.5 in the morning and 1.5 in the evening. The recommended amount should be on the back of the bag. Just because they’re still eating doesn’t mean they should be. Just go by what it says on the bag and you’ll be good...although I’m not too fond of Purina. I feed my 3 dogs Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover’s Soul since my GSD mix is still under a year.

Oh alright i guess its not to much for him, he had three cups today. Im using purina right now because thats what he’s been feeding on before i got him. He’s going to the vet on friday, so ill see what she recommends.

If they sell science diet at the vet’s office then they will recommend it to make some extra money. Here’s an example of the ingredients in that food Link. Notice the only REAL meat product is chicken. The other stuff is grains and other crap. I was told that if 3 or more of the first 5 ingredients are grain then the food isn’t good. I’m just telling you this because my vet recommended Science diet to me since they sell it there. On our next visit a vet that was just helping out (wasn’t affiliated with the office) told me to go to the natural pet food store in town and get some better food. I agree that vet’s know best, but there are times when they’re just trying to get more money out of you. Anyway, good luck with your pup.

I love science diet. I saw a big differance in my rottweilers coat and muscle tone after taking her off of purina and putting her on science diet large breed puppy. She loves it. Your pup may act like it is still hungry after you feed it but don’t ever feed it until it’s full. This can cause all kinds of problems on top of the puppy becoming overweight. Not good for joints and hips.

I tried Science diet for my APBT who has dry skin and the large breed puppy food for my GSD mix who has skin allergies.

Lady (my APBT) got bad gas and her skin didn’t get any better even with 2 pills of fish oil a day. Tonka (my GSD mix) also had bad gas and he was constantly chewing and causing himself to have scabs. I switched them both to Canidae Lamb & Rice all life stages. They both got a little better and the gas went away, but it still wasn’t good enough. Even with the fact that I was giving them the amount instructed on the bag Lady was getting plump. Now that I’ve switched to Chicken Soup for the puppy lover’s soul neither of them have skin issues, Lady is a good weight, and I am completely happy. Whatever works for your dog is great and I’m glad I found what works for mine. I guess that’s why there’s so many different dog foods out there and why people have different opinions on what works best.

True, I tried a couple differant thinkgs before switching to the science diet, like purina one, eukanuba, nutro, and bill jacks. All of them made her fur so dull and she wasn’t filling out like a rotty should, so we tried the science diet large breed puppy and it worked great, where as it didn’t help with my aunt mastiffs skin allergies. She used nutro and it helped alot. Really it’s all your choice, my mom fed her dog purina dog chow for sevnteen years, a boxer lab mix lived for seventeen years on just regular dog chow and table scraps.

Yeah i might switch it just depends on how my puppy is doing, hes going to the vet tomorrow, right now im happy with purina one. Lamb is its first ingredient, than some sort of grain and oatmeal. I have to look at exactly to see whats in it. But his stools are solid and he’s hyper. The puppy is kinda stubborn though, its hard to wake him up and get him to stand without calling him over and over and acting very exciting. I was walking him on a leash today, and every street corner or so he would just sit down for about 3 mins until i can get him to go again. I try not to pull on the leash, just letting it hang there without tension. i try not to push him out for his bathroom time when he doesn’t choose to go. Is there any tips to get him to stand up without physical force?

Hey Reptic

i am having the exact same problem with my female APBT at the moment she never comes out her cage when you dont sound excited she doesnt really like to walk outside on her leash she will either do what yours does or she will pull back so she is pulling away from me and ends up choking herself with the coller but if you get any of those problems sorted out give me a shout and i will do the same good luck :)

My APBT is starting to get the hang of walking on a leash. I usually never let it get tight, when it does tighten up he will usually pull back or just stop walking all together. I started walking him from day 1. The first day it was difficult to get him to walk with the leash in my hand, so i went to a quite place and let him just drag it around. Day 2 i started to lure him with treats, and a toy when ever he got distracted. It may be easier to walk him with two people or another dog that way he can follow you, and the other person.

Well i do what you have said as i had to travel 4hours on a train to pick up my pup and she had the leash on when i arrived at her old home and she dragged it around and totally isnt botherd by the leash never has and i always walk with the leash loose she is anxious around my family dog Cassie she is a choco lab Milla loves Cassie to bits but just doesnt like to walk next to her obviously the size difference
Milla makes the leash go tight by randomly stopping we can be walking fine with a loose leash and she will just stop and pull back as if she is trying to slip her coller which just doesnt wprk as it is loose for her neck but it cant get passed her big head :D and just trys to reverse and generally doesnt want to walk no more but she gets dragged for awhile then walks again she just likes to attempt to be the boss but it doesnt work

Have you tried using a non pull harness or head collar. Those are easier to get you dog walking, the harness they love because they can’t feel you holding the leash. My rottweiler had a hard time walking on a leash and collar and is scared to death of little dogs, cars and sliding doors. But you put that harness on her and boy does she go go go.

Milla had a harness i had to remove it as itwas rubbing her armpits and made them rash like i thought it was too tight and then it still happend when i loose it so i got her to walk on her coller she doesnt like that so today i got her a half choke coller and earlier she seemed to walk fineon that and hopefully shedoes as when she is older she will be walked on a full check chain as for haltis i dontlikethose my pal Muffin his old GSD ended up walking with a slight head tilt and i have known that to happen with other dogs and that is with thehalti put on clrrectly but fingers crossed i have herwalking fine now :)

I suggest the head collar because my aunt uses them for her great danes, it seems to work great for them but it’s owners choice, I don’t blame you I wouldn’t put something on my dog that I thought might cause problems. I’m not a big fan of the chokers, being that the pitbull I had when I was younger would choke that crap out of himself trying to pull me down the street. He didn’t care. The trainer said I had it on right so I knew it wasn’t because I had it on wrong, so dogs are just head strong, my rot puppy isn’t a puller yet because I’ve been working with her since I got her on leash training, but rottweilers are a pretty head strong breed and I’m sure if she wants to when she’s older, she’ll pull. With her I started out with a regular nylon harness that comes across the chest rather then the armpits and after she became comfortable with that I started with her collar, she has absolutly no problems now.

I suppose each is to there own your aunt preferes haltis as she obviously has good results with them like you with the harness and me with check chains i understand what you mean with the pitbull you had but sooner than later they will learn and stop pulling our family dog was the same she is a chocolate Labrador and she used to pull like a bull very strong for a Labrador but she has learned and well i just ignore the gagging really as theyll learn lol

Treats are great for getting your puppy to do what you want. Or even getting an excited attitude to get your puppy riled up can help with that

Where I live you have to have hundred thousand dollar insurance to have a pitbull lol, I was giving suggestions that worked for me, you just have to stay firm on training, some are easier to train then others, my rotty learned all kinds of new commands at just 8 weeks where it took my pitbull when I was younger months to catch on. Sometimes taking walks to calm an energetic dog down before training sessions can help. But for a tired puppy I’d said it needs motivation, thats why I suggested the treat of an excited tone of voice

Milla is black all over with dark bits of brindle through her aka black brindle has a teeny strip of whote on her chest and chin but they arent noticeable unless you look closely and she has big brown eyes how about ypurs?

I like the name Jackson ;)

haha milla must be a very nice looking APBT i would like to see a picture. Jackson is a purple pitbull white feet, "blue" or silver fur color, white chest and half white face. Its hard to explain without a picture! haha i need to take one. But he has big green eyes.. He’s 22pounds at 11 weeks, born on 5-26 Man i have to be very strict with this dog, we just took a walk and i gotta yell at him to get his attention he’s harded headed but very smart. He has an outta or umbilical hernia. Althought it doesnt bother him i think it looks silly, the vet said i can fix it but if its not broken why fix it.

You both need to get pictures up. lol
Here’s a picture of my girl, Lady.

I have other pictures from our family pictures at the dog park, but they’re on my boyfriend’s laptop. I’ll probably make a new thread in a few days with those.

I’ve never met an APBT that wasn’t hard headed. I’ve owned 2 and met many more. They’re too smart to be anything but hard headed. That’s one reason why I love them. LOL!

Lol thank you. And does anyone have any ideas why my dog doesnt like to take walks at night. Im just thinking because he’s young. But i tried to walk him at around 10-9pm but all he wants to do is sit right next to me and rest. I want to get him motivated during night walks, he does fine in the hot, dry day time lol

One of two things I can think of now. The first is that this is his bed time and he isn’t motivated because he is sleepy and ready for bed. Two he hears all the weird sounds of animals that you don’t hear and it scares him. If one is the case, try using treats to move him forward and see if he follows you, if two, try and make him comfortable and show him there is nothing to be scared of. It’ll take some work but I’m sure you get him walking.
