I need to hear from chow familiar peple... Hey,
It’s been a while since I have been on but I recently came into a problem... I had a 3 day old pup dumped in my car aprox 7 weeks ago... he is doing GREAT! I bottle fed him and we are almost completely weaned :D, he is also a gorgeous dog BUT I need help... The vet said when I took him in at about 6 days she thought he was a german shepard X pyraneese because he was black/tan and fluffy like the shepard but had double toe nails on his dewclaws... which is aparently an akc requirement for the pyraneese? but once he hit six weeks we noticed his tongue was turning black... which means he is part chow if i am not mistaken... I dont have a single problem with any of these breeds but I am not familiar with the chow at all! and my grandparents aparently are worried that he is going to become agressive and be a danger to the children... I want opinions from you guys... assuming he gets the right training etc etc what are the odds of this happening? is this common with chows? THANKS :)

My cousins have a chow x retriever mix, Dawson, and he’s just a big mix of white blond curlicue fur and this gigantic purple tongue that flops out of his mouth when he barks. He’s the biggest baby every and he thinks he’s a 90 pound lapdog. It all comes down to the old "it’s how they’re raised." If you respect and train the dog, then they will respect and love you back.

I need to hear from chow familiar peple... Thanks guys... I apreciate the responses... for most dogs I do believe the it’s in how they are raised idea... but I also know that there is a small portion of it that is genetic.... but it’s good to know that people are having really good experiences with chow mix dogs :)

I need to hear from chow familiar peple... There is a couple that own 2 Chows two villages from me they have a black one and a red one both are equally bueatiful they walk over the woman and run riot with her as i have heard you need to be a strong owner to own one as they are apparently head strong and stubborn amd you nee to show you are top notch 24/7 but obviousltly this woman isnt thats why they walk over her mever seen them with the man think its only the woman thats walks them lerhaps they are just hers? Also i heard they male great gaurd dogs perhaps that is why your grandparents are unsure of him, But either way a gorgeous breed :)

I need to hear from chow familiar peple... Thanks! actually my grandparents are unsure of the breed because their friend had a chow (i think it was pure) and for a few years he had no problem with the dog but then it started to get agressive with everyone except his owner and then one day had to be put down because he attacked his owner and I guess they were told this was common... which it sounds like it is but only because the dogs are often not trained well, socialized well and placed in homes that allow them to be the top dog

I need to hear from chow familiar peple... These two are also purebreeds, but i believe if they are like Perro de Presa Canario and Japanese Tosa which also are strong stubborn and need a strong owner and with a good training they are good dogs same as Chow Chow there is no bad dog just owner as others also said firm training will make it a good dog

I need to hear from chow familiar peple... When I was in elementary school my sister got a purebred chow puppy. It tried to kill my dog after living with us for almost a year. When I was in high school we got a chow/chocolate lab mix puppy. a year and a half later she also tried to kill my dog (same dog). I’m not overreacting here. My dog had to go to the vet for stitches both times. I don’t necessarily have anything against the breed, but I’ll never own a chow/chow mix again.

I need to hear from chow familiar peple... When I was little my mom had a chow named simba, he loved me and my mom, but he attcked my baby brother. My stepdad took him and had him put to sleep for bitting a child. Chow chows are a one person dog, they don’t want anybody esle other then their owner in the picture. They are the number one dog to watch for in biting on our list at the clinic. Second is the white german shepherd. It’s nothing against the breed but I agree with repfantic, I would never own one personally as a pet. I’ve been attacked by a doberman and I would still own one of them.

I need to hear from chow familiar peple... Thanks again for the responses wanted to update you all... he seems to be growing alot these days...seems like everytime i see him hes bigger lol.. his feet are HUGE and his head/nose look mastiff...so we are pretty sure hes part mastiff... he is the biggest love bug in the world... seems to get along with everyone... he is a pain in the buns to walk though, been working in our yard with him (he wont be going out into the world on walks until his shots are complete) and by all means he is the laziest puppy i have ever met... hes about 9wks old and he stops to lay down every 15 ft lol... he has taken to barking lately as well which im trying to solve... it generally seems to be a HEY LOOK AT ME type thing and he sounds like a seal almost, he only does it when he can’t get to us but can see us, like when we are working in the yard and he is in the dog kennel for exercise... or when he is impatiently waiting for his food... i feed him 3x a day and as soon as i pick up the dish and walk toward the food bag he starts barkin... but stops as soon as i go toward him...

I need to hear from chow familiar peple... I used to live next door to a pure chow when I lived in the city. I was pretty youn, maybe 7 ot 8 and this was golden chow named Honey. Mean dog. I didn’t know the owners very well, but my sister and I were terrified of her. She chased me many a times, but always stopped when her owners told her to. She made me afraid of dogs for a while(faded when I was more educated on them) and I would always hide from her in the bushes when she got out.
My opinion on chows is that they ae prone to agression and need a dominant owner with proper socioizing and pobably extra caution around kids and other dogs(espcecially other dogs). I also don’t recemmond having another dog in the same house as a chow.q
I have a dog that may be part chow. She’s got a partly black tongue. She’s really sweet and listens really well, although I think that’s the lab/husky part of her.

I need to hear from chow familiar peple... yeah im hoping Gizmo gets more of a mastiff persona of his breeds we know of i love the mastiffs i have met lol... I have dont more reading and research and from what I have seen its recomended to take them to dog parks and what not so they are familiar with other dogs and view them as positives and normal everyday interactions as well as bring them around ALOT of people it I guess helps them from bonding too strongly with one person and helps prevent the people agressive behavior... so that’s my plan aside from the normal training I would do with any dog I’m going to be sure to take him to the dog park once or twice a week and have everyone i can meet him and play with him so he learns people are extra good as well lol...

I need to hear from chow familiar peple... just so you know, the blue tongue isnt limited to the chow chow ;)
its kind of an old wives tale that a dog with a blue/black tongue is for sure a chow, although chow mixes are extremely common so its not impossible. the shar-pei also shares this trait, although you’re a lot less likely to find a shar-pei mix. i believe i read somewhere that the reason the Chinese encouraged this trait when breeding these dogs was they believed the black tongue, displayed when barking, warded off evil spirits.
ive know tons of chow mixes, most of which are excellent dogs and have no problems. i have noticed that they are quicker to bite when irritated as they get older, however this seems to be more true of dogs that show obvious signs of chow heritage rather than just the black tongue.
sounds like you found yourself a wonderful companion, do you have pictures?
