 Dogs in Heat?

My 10 month old akita went into her first heat cycle this morning. She’s dripping blood and stuff.

So far, we’ve just kept her inside, as I’ve seen another dog wandering around. I’m planning to fix up the kennel(she dug out of it last time) with some concrete(just putting it on the perimeter) so she can’t dig. I also plan to put a diaper on her and change it. How many times a day should I change it? Do you think she’ll rip it off? Is it necessary?

In other words, this is my first unspayed female dog, therefore my first dog in heat and I’m not really sure what to do. We’re not going to let her wander at all and make sure the kennel is secure so no dogs get in or out. I heard about using dipers, and they seem like they’d be a good precaution, since I really have no intent of breeding her, especially this young.

FOR ANY WONDERING, she isn’t spayed because she’s a show dog, and I have no intent of breeding her.

i have 2 entire girls, one having her first litter next year and the other hopefully if she passes her health tests will be having her first litter summer 2011. my youngest has not had her first season yet, she’s 7 months. however when my older girl is in season she is under house arrest until she finishes and i would suggest the same to you, nothing can stop a determined dog from mating with a female in season including nappies (diapers). just to be on the safe side i would keep her in the whole 21 days :)

What if she gets really destructive with boredom? She’s used to being outside and hates being inside, and tends to rip up the carpet and scratch up the doors and chew on everything if she has to be inside for a long time. She even broke the door to my room(Darn thing hardly closes anymore).

A secure kennel wouldn’t do? Or the sunroom with the doors locked?

And what about the blood? It got all over the floor when we discovered it this morning. We’re getting her some diapers. How often do I need to change them to keep her free of infection and sanitary?

Is there anything special I should do for her, or just continue as usual?

Will she become more aggressive towards my other two female dogs(both spayed)?

 Dogs in Heat?

I no when i had my Nelly and she got her first period before she got spayed she was very affectionate towards me (nothing new) but was very aggressive towards other people, i just put a pair of my old pants on her that i didnt want any more and used sanitary towels she had a little go at them as they were new and obviously not compfy for her but after awhile she learned to live with them i put a freash sanitary towel in her pants every hour as she was quite heavy in flow at night she got her night time pants on and her day tine ines went in the wash so they were ready for the next day i changed her at night every 3hiurs as she hated being woken up.

When my parents got Cassie the Chocolate Labrador we just kept her in her cage with her toys and she had newspaper instead of her blankets just so it was easy cleaning amd was out every hour for the toilet and to play in the backyard but that was always supervised i was the only person who took her for a walk twice a day but she also got spayed after it

But we all go about it different ways if you dont really have the time to change pants etc id recommend do what my parents done, if you do have the time and dont mind teaching your dog to leave the panties alone every second then id say do ehat i done with Nelly plus what me and Nelly done we strangly got a stronger bond and after she had finished she was more protective of me and my parents small things make a difference lol
i however am not really looking firward to Milla starting as i in a way hated it it just can get so annoying but hey ill only need to put up with it for a month then she wont get anymore ever again so i guess thatll be ok

oh i forgot to ask you awhile ago but does USA not have nuetered show classes? I know in Europe there is breed show, best female *enter breed here* class, best male *enter breed here* class, best nutered *enter breed here* group, best *enter breed here* female and best *enter breed here* male group

 Dogs in Heat?

Thanks for the tip. I fell asleep early last night(stupid swine flu is exhauting) and I guess my mom just let her inside. It’s a pretty big mess, but whatever. I’m not responsible for letting her inside without even trying a diaper.

I think what I’m going to do is fix up the kennel as soon as I can(once I’m recovered from swine flu, probably a few days) and make sure it’s really, really secure. For now, she gets to be in the sunroom.

Oh, and I think I have to leave her unspayed here in the US. I’ve never heard of spaying a show dog here.

The reason you don’t spay a show dog isn’t because your not allowed it’s because if she wins the championship it means she is a perfect example of her breed, this means that she is great for breeding unlike some of the other dogs that people breed even they are of no show quality. They want you to breed dogs that are a great example of the breed, if your dog is a show dog, this means she is a good example of this breed.

Well, yes, I was aware of that. But most places also don’t allow you to enter a fixed dog. Which is why I haven’t spayed Rikka.

Thats because a show quality dog is a good breeding quality dog, if your dog is fixed what good is she going to do as a breeder?

Hey it’s up to you whether to breed or not, but as far as the shows are concerned she is breeding quality, which is why they don’t want her spayed. I’d get her spayed and just not tell them. I don’t breed either, but my aunt does because she has show quality dogs with champion bloodlines. I believe in getting all dogs and cats spayed because we already have to high of an overpopulation and there are to many dogs not finding homes, dogs that are just as worth our time as any puppy. I am actually looking into adopting another rottweiler named greta instead of taking a puppy from my friend. Really it’s what ever floats your boat. If you don’t want to breed her and want to get her fixed, don’t show her anymore it’s as simple as that......Most people who show their dogs are willing to breed if they win the championship title, your not, so if your dame were to win a championship you would not breed her and create more show quality puppies therefore it’s not worth showing her. Then again it’s completely your choice, I’m just voicing my opinion.

Spaying her and not telling them simply will not work. There’s a scar, and it’s just not within my morals to be dishonest like that. If she gets championship title, I may breed her. But I highly doubt she will, as she is not from champion bloodlines. Otherwise, I will not breed her due to overpopulation of dogs.

By the way, saying it’s not worth it to show her if I don’t want to breed her is really a matter of opinion. There are a lot of different reasons for showing. I’m doing it because it’s a great experience for me and my dog. I wouldn’t care if she never won an award in her life. It’s just for the experience.

K and as I stated.....

I didn’t say it was a fact. To be honest I wouldn’t put my dog through the showing process, it would stress her out so bad. Some dogs enjoy it, I personally won’t put zoe through it. But then again thats another opinion of mine.

I know. I was just saying.

And my dog likes it. She likes the classes. I have watched for nervous and distressed signs, and she shows nothingbut williness to learn and she looks as if she’s having fun.

 Dogs in Heat?

i show both my NI’s and they absolutely love it. NIS shows are not just about showing the dogs but also a chance for dogs and owners to interact. its usually a weekend and everyone camps and before and after the show the dogs are all off lead (in a secured area away from dangers) and allowed to play to their hearts content. everyone knows each other too as we love the dogs so much. we have classes for spayed and nuetered at our shows, and spayed and nuetered dogs can compete in the normal classes too if i remember rightly. both my dogs have a fault as every dog does but they have both been placed highly in classes including 4 1st places for xero who will having a litter next year which i have a waiting list for. just because your dog is’nt from champion lines does’nt mean she is’nt good enough for a litter. if she gets placed in classes and the breed clubs agree she is a good example of the breed and she passes her health tests i dont see a problem if you decide to breed in the future as long as you have a waiting list and are willing to be available for help and advice for the whole of the pups lives
