 Great Danes

So I really like this breed, but I started to shy away from them because of how short their life expectancy is.
Now though I feel differently although they still short lives I really would like one or two, or maybe eight(kidding)Anyways I just have a few questions for anyone with experience.

So here they are:

How are they to train?

How firm to you have to be with them?

How are they with other dogs and animals?

Do males and females have different personalities?

Thanks to everyone in advance

They are pretty easy to train, you just have to keep with it. Shadow is soooo stuborn, so even though she knows what sit means and knows how to do it, if she doesn’t want to she’s not going to. Thats your typical great dane.

You have to be very firm with them, because they are so stubborn, they have a tendency to want to walk all over you and do what ever they want if you don’t.

They are great with other animals, and especially great with children. Cats may be an issue, ours like to chase them.

Males tend to be a little more mellow and will listen better, while females tend to be the very stubborn ones. Then again this can be different with everyone. You just have to find the puppy that fits you better.

Your dogs are gorgeous!!! I really like Harlequin thats def my favorite color. Someone who lives around me has a weird colored gd she’s like a blueish grey with chocolate brown spots. She is one of the prettiest danes I have seen, around here in a long time.

One more questions how are they to walk on a leash?

Well thanks now I know what to look for in the future!!!!!When I worked at the spca in my area we had a black dane come in who was nothing but skin draped over bone(he looked like one of those weird skinny flying horse things from harry potter)Well anyways he was pretty hard to get where I wanted him to go, and he had no muscle so I could just imagine what I healthy dane could do lol

Trust me, it’s not pretty. You def want to have a gentel lead of a choker or whatever method you chose, I don’t like chokers because my pit mix used to choke himself to death trying to pull.

I know they are good for just falling into line, lol. I really want a dane though so I will have to become more dominant with my future dogs. Considering I plan on having danes, St. Bernards and of course my goldens lol(gotta have one easier breed haha)

So I just realized that I have to get danes, lol. I have been looking at pics and I think they are the most beautiful dogs ever.

I also decided that for my first dane I am going to get one from a breeder just so I know that I will most likely get a healthy dog. And when I have more experience I will def find a rescue.

So anyways I just wanted to let you know that I am hooked even though I don’t even own one yet!!!!!

Hooked on danes lol. Their stool is pretty big, sometimes the piles can be about the size of a volley ball. Danes are great dogs, very affectionate and very needy. They love to just be with you and make great movie watching buddies :) Good luck on your hunt, if you live near akron we’re breeding shadow and joker one more time. Puppies in february.

Well I’m guessing you live in the states and I live Ontario, Canada. I have seen a lot of the blue merle danes that have blue eyes is that common and is it aloud in the standard?

Oh god the size of a volleyball, well at least they go outside that way if I puke I can just hose it away, haha

God a am bombarding you with questions here lol

anyways I have one more, how hard was it to potty train them?I am pretty good at this but that is a must for, because I hate the small of dog poo and pee in a house.

I trained two 3 week old husky mix puppies to go outside so I think I am pretty good at it lol

The female had a weak bladder so even though she was potty trained she still had accidents, over all I’d say if you constantly work at it, 1 month. They are pretty easy to train if you stay on it.

Well that is pretty good, one month isn’t that long to train a puppy.

God I was looking at pictures and I decided that I really want a harlequin, blue merle and a mantle.
Those are three favorite!!!!I never knew there were soo many different types of gd’s

Are talking about blue merle or the ones that are all a dark blue grey?I like both, but theres just something about the blue merle that just is beautiful.

I was talking to my parent earlier and telling them about great danes, and I was like all I want is three maybe four of the coat types lol, but I think I have found my breed and they look amazing in groups don’t ya think?lol

Just imagine puppies....lol. I’m talking about the all blue, we just bred joker to a blue merel female, thats harlequin to blue merel, I can’t wait to see the puppy outcome. Great Danes are beautiful, shadow walks like a preppy when I walk her, she holds her head high and trots. I’ll get a blue dane one day they are 1,500 dollars, but well worth it.

my mom has a 3yr old great dane and we didnt realize what we were getting into when we got her... she is still very much a large puppy, we love her to death but you must be able to deal with their puppy behaviors and we didnt quite realize how bad those are... doesnt seem like much when a 6mo old cockerspaniel is doing them but when a 6mo old giant puppy dane is it can get scary... and watch out for their tails! thats a big thing our danes tail has knocked over so many things and people its not even funny (ok sometimes it was) so be aware that your dog will be able to clear everything off your cofee table in one wag lol... gl!

Oh I bet it’s more like having 3 puppies at one time but I guess I will just have to try and keep it tired all the time.

I have been looking for breeders around me and I have to say I am a little disappointed because all of their females are really small,I know they are smaller but these look to me like they don’t seem to fit the standard

I had one when I was a kid, his name was diesle. As for the small females, I feel you on that subject. When we have puppies, everyone wants the smallest puppy. We actually had one lady come to look at them, they asked to see the parents, when she saw them she said "Wow, i didn’t know they got that big! Well, we’re going to go out to luch and I’ll call you and let you know." Keep in mind, Joker is 160, shadow is 130. They are both good sizes. We had one ldy come to us, she wanted to stud joker with her blue merle, this female only weighed 90 ponds, I was like, Joker would hurt her.......

So is it normal for them to be small or are they usually good sizes because I prefer females over males but I still would like them to be a good size.

Like the one blue merle that lives around here is pretty big and it is a female I mean I know they are going to be smaller than a male.

90 pounds is really small ,do you know how old the female was?

Do you work with other breeders or just with your own dogs?

You just have the 2 danes right?Shadow and Joker
