Female’s name is Gremlin and the male’s name is Cricket. They make.. interesting pets. Of course, it varies from animal to animal how sociable they will be. We bought the female from a bad breeder, and she came to us shy and scared. They tend to bond to one person, and our female bonded to me. She hated my husband for the longest time and gave him a few good bites during the first year, but she’s never bit me. She’s come around and tolerates him now. Shes no longer shy, and is quite a good pet now (though it took a year to get her there) She plays fetch, screams and wags her tail whenever we enter the room, and rolls over for belly rubs (but she dislikes being held).

Our male came from a good breeder, hates me and has bonded to my husband. He doesn’t bite, but he will bark at me occasionally to let me know how he feels. He doesn’t get excited when he sees us like the female does, but gets extremely happy when he gets to play with a cat. He has become more stand-offish as he has come close to sexual maturity, but this problem will most likely go away when he is neutered next month. Hes a big baby and likes being carried around.

We keep them in their own bedroom full of toys, cat trees, etc. They’re destructive animals, we used to give them free range of the house but had too many problems. The female likes my scent and eats my clothing if its accessible, and I’d lost too much $$ worth of clothing. They can jump very high, and they knock things over. Once I got home to find feathers everywhere... they found our feather comforter. They’d steal food and knock over drinks. They’re also very hard to litter train, many will never use a litter box. Ours get it right about 90% of the time, but that means 10% of the time it ends up on the floor... and we were tired of having to watch our step when we got up in the morning. The female also had the habit of climbing onto our bed while we slept and "digging" on us. They love to dig, if you don’t give them a sandbox they will dig in their litter boxes... actually, if you give them a sandbox they will still dig in their litter box, so even though theyre 90% litter trained a lot of it ends up on the floor anyway around the box. They both are harness trained but we never take them outside unless theyre going to the vet. We feed them very HIGH quality cat food, mixed vegetables, fruit, mealworms, and raw rabbit meat. But they will steal human food whenever possible.

Oh, wow.
What a win-loose situation. But I’m sure that pros outmatch the cons of owning them, right?(meaning you, personally)

Anyway. Such adoreable things and they look healthy.
Good think you rescued her from a bad breeder. She might have stayed with him/her, or worse. Go to someone who wasn’t ready to own one.

I couldn’t imagine not having them around. With exotics you have to be willing to take the good with the bad and accept them for what they are, if you can do that they are a joy to have.

Unfortunately its true about people getting them without knowing what they’re getting into... I’ve seen a lot of them bounce household to household and fennecs aren’t the best at readjusting to new people. They’re cute and not dangerous so theyre in high demand and a lot of people get them and aren’t prepared for the commitment.

I wouldn’t, it just sounds too cruel to the rat/mouse. We used to feed our foxes frozen/thawed pinkie mice (since we had snakes anyway) but they only ate the heads, figured that they went to more use for the snakes... I doubt ours would try to kill them if they had been alive.

Some people release crickets in their rooms/enclosures to let them hunt. Crickets are one of their favorite foods.

They loved our ferrets, but sometimes the ferrets were too rough with them. THey love our cats, but our cats hate them (can’t keep up, get moody and start hissing). I know of people whos gets along with their dogs, usually fennecs dont have a problem with dogs if theyre raised with them, but a lot of dogs still have that hunting instinct and will try to harm the foxes (ie. if your dog would chase/bark at a squirrel than it shouldn’t be around a fox).

Foxes are also predators. Some foxes would kill a ferret, a rabbit, a rat, etc. It seems to depend on whether or not theyre raised with other animals or not. Before putting any two animals near eachother you have to think where on the foodchain they both are.

Very interesting. I would like to get one in the future (I am only sixteen right now), but of course it would be months of researching and i’d need to have a stable job and household so I can properly pay for it.. also i’d need a room where I can fox-proof it. Which is probably alot of work but eh, its worth it in the end I guess. It’ll still probably be another 5 years or more down the road before I get one.. :P
