chinchilla, ferret, a rat would be great, very smart and will recognize you. Whats your experience? You should really get a rat.

With birds it really depends on your experience... a cockatiel or parakeet may be good... I have heard that love birds are also great companions and bond great with their owners... if you have alot of experience/time/money one of the bigger birds like a macaw or something may be good... they also seem to bond well with their owners... but also live for a LONG time... :) Good luck on your search....

Well let me tell you the best companion pet for any one that is still in a cage is an African Grey Parrot. Wonderful Creatures they are. They learn to talk, you can hold them, they have the brain activity of a five year old child, this has been proven. Thjey are not cheap though, they need a large cage, plenty of food, and you cannot attention starve them. They need attention!

I don’t recommend an African Grey or any kind of large parrot for any kid still living at home, unless the WHOLE family is involved and in agreement. They live nearly as long as people do, and are expensive to maintain. Rehomed parrots tend to have a lot of issues, so unless you can commit to the bird for its whole life, you are better off with something smaller-- with a shorter life expectancy. If your parents don’t want a "messy" pet, you DON’T want a large bird.

If you’re going for birds, go for a pair of parakeets, parrotlets, or cockatiels. These birds are all relatively easy to keep and if you get hand fed ones can be extremely friendly. I would not recommend starting with anything larger. Care gets more complicated and they live a VERY long time. Keep in mind that the birds I mentioned do live up to 20 years, so it’s definitely a big commitment that your parents could end up with. A good selling point for rats is that they don’t live very long, are fairly clean and easy to care for, and are EXTREMELY friendly and outgoing. They definitely recognize their people and can learn their names (mine each come when their names are called and are trained to come, even from across the room!).
