 What can i house in a 10 gallon tank?

i have a ten gallon tank what should i put in it? i thought ide go here caz this covers more animals than just fish or whatever.

Well you can house one anole,but they are expensive to take care of.Maybe a hamster or some other rodent.

FEEDER MICE:) j/k their are various creatures you can keep in their, most being temporary because they will get bigger....You could try things that can stay in there for life like: Lepord geckos, taranchulas, scorpion, frogs, small tortoises, anoles, bearded dragon, .......the list goes on....a rodent would be miserable in a tank like that. My feeders don’t even like being in their 10 gal.

I would consider some toad and frog species, bufo regularis being a great idea, a leo, for snakes perhaps a male kenyan sand boa, or western hognose if you do the research would be possable, but those snake choices can be difficult hognose with feeding, kenyans can be nippy. I would look strongly at the toad option. Another option is of course inverts, a rosea or emperor scorpion would make fine chioces.

A very small cricket colony. Almost anything full grown would be cramped in a 10 gallon.

I agree with gottee, don’t trust that one post saying torts are okay to put in a 10 gallon. I was blinking at the suggestion to put a bearded dragon in there for life. They get over 2 feet long! They need at Least a 40 gallon long.

Personally, spiders and scorpions (what kind depends on how much research you care to put in) are great to put in 10 gallon tanks. There are some species of frog that will do fine as well. If you want to divert away, you can keep a hamster or other small mammal in there fine as well. I had a friend that had a small guinea pig in a 10 gallon once and it was absolutely fine. The great thing about mammals is that they can be taken out frequently and you can get those balls to put them in so they can travel around. I find glass tanks greater for small mammals (like hamsters and mice) because it’s much harder to escape from; compaired to those plastic jungle gyms that they can very easily chew through. But if you go that route, only choose one mammal. Two would be crowded.

Um....... a 10 gallon is WAAAAAAAAAAY too small for any size guinea pig. They need at least 7 square feet of floor space in their cages, and more is better, even if you take them out a lot. a 10ga isn’t even 2 square feet! Also, the balls are very very dangerous for guineas, whose backs aren’t designed to bend that way. Some small mammals (mice, in a small colony or 1-2 dwarf hamsters) would do olkay in a 10ga tank. A syrian (the biger kind, who should be kept singly anyway) would be cramped in a tank that size, and it definitely wouldn’t be give enough for even one rat (who should be kept in at least pairs anyway).

I said a small tortoise not a sulcata tortoise, I myself being that I have an aunt who has a tortoise a small child could ride, know that a large tortoise wouldn’t qiut fit in a 10 gal. There are small tortoises that would do well in a 10 agl. Some should take their own advise and do some research! Now granted I don’t know tomuch about beardies cause I’ve never owned one, but I am almost positive they can stay in one as babies, am I right? Technically I would sell the 10 gal., save up my money and buy a bigger tank for a larger animal I wanted.

10 gallons per inch of turtle so you would have a pretty tiny tortoise, 1 inch or less, and its better to have a larger cage anyways. glass cages are not ideal for tortoises anyways, maybe a wood one or a gated off area or even a large rubbermaid bin or toat or something (with a screen lid).

I hate to say it, but just because you have a tank isn’t necessarily a reason to get a pet.. it usually works the other way around. If anything, I’d get a tarantula, fish, or some other hardy, lower maintenance pet. Just remember that they still need a lot of care, and that you should do a whole lot of research on whatever you decide on *before* you get it.

Just to clarify the pets you should NOT put in a ten gallon that were mentioned:

1) Tortoises. Ten gallons per inch of tortoise=at least 60 gallons for even a small one.
2) Bearded dragons. 40 gallon minimum!
3) Guinea pigs. Should never be housed in glass cages anyway, should always be housed in pairs, and should have WAY more space than a 10 gallon.
4) Rats. Should never be housed in glass and should always be kept in pairs. Way too small for even one.

BTW, half a room with a plexiglass door probably gets a ton more ventilation than a tiny little tank. That’s why it works.

Even though this thread is old and the person has most likely made their decision by now, I thought I would throw in the fact that a 10 gallon is too small for almost any reptile to live in for life.

There is almost no way for a decent temperature gradient to be created in a 10 gallon aquarium. Almost any size bulb will heat the entire enclosure up and leave no way for the animal to regulate its body temperature.

I love viper geckos, I’m looking to get one. Yes, they can be housed in a 10 gallon, but I like to give my herps a little extra space so I’m not going to use a 5 gallon. Besides, I have an empty 10 gallon!

i personally wouldn’t put rodents in a 10 gallon
(if you look at the small animals forums there’s a lot of complaints about them being toxic for small rodents)

uhm. i got my beardie when he was tiny. i had a 40 for him on the side but bought a 10 for him for a month or two because he had a hard time catching crickets. he was BEYOND tiny. though i agree you shouldn’t get one if you don’t have or plan to get a bigger tank within a few weeks.
