THERE IS A GRAPHIC PICTURE TOWARDS THE END

Thought I’d post some of my favorite pictures from the Uganda Wildlife Center.

Notes:
-the one with the guys holding the limp baboon, that is not a dead baboon, it had just had a physical and was knocked out.
-the ones with the animals in the holding cages are either temporarily in the veterinary unit or are only housed in the smaller cages at night where they can be locked in and are safe (mostly so they can’t be stolen) and have huge enclosures during the day.
-the vervet monkeys are not enclosed, they are free to come and go, but receive medical attention if illness is noticed.
-the chimp with very little hair came in that way (lack of nutrition and use of hair in witchcraft)
-the tortoise at the end was left hanging from a tree by a piece of wire in the forest
-the parrot came in with an injury to its chest after falling on it and is having surgery in the picture

Anyway. Here it goes.

Lol, enough for you?

Lol. Did that when I was fourteen. My mom’s work sends her to all kinds of crazy places, so I went with her (and my friend) to Uganda. I just emailed them/called ahead and set it up. They were really hesitant at first because I was so young but quickly realized I was fairly competent and even let me assist with surgeries and force feed pythons larger than myself.

I think something like that would be a good experience for you to learn that some of these animals just should not be kept as pets.

It was the Uganda Wildlife Education Center in Entebbe. Maybe you should spend your $4000 on that. I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything and I’m really grateful to have gone. I recommend it.

The plane ticket was about $1000-$1500 round trip (took a lot of saving up to pay for that!!). It looks amazing on a college app. Volunteering there was free, but if you want to stay in the rooms they have available it’s something like $15 or $20 a night. There are restaurants near by and you can bring food with you (package it well from the ants and vervet monkeys! lol). We came back to our room from being gone ten minutes at the bathroom to find seven monkeys who had opened our door and dug out our mangoes! Lol.

Jane Goodall was also there ONE day before we were (we could have been in the meeting with her if we had gotten there earlier!), she works with them and uses their chimp habitat as a model.

Anyway, IMO it was a far more rewarding experience to go there and work with them in their native land/habitat and be able to see what they do there and the places these animals come from than it would be to own one of those animals.

If you have any more questions about it, let me know!!

Here is a link to their web site. Link

The plane ride depends on your layovers and particular ticket. About 18-20 hours maybe? Not as bad as it seems, though. You always get sweet movies and stuff on longer flights.

I stayed for about six weeks, but you can go for as short or long a time as you want.

thanks guys! It was pretty much amazing, I’d recommend it to anyone. There aren’t any insurance things that make it illegal for the average person to work with these animals in the center, so it’s a really good experience because you get to do so much! I was only fourteen when I went.

Please learn how to spell the animal’s name before claiming to "own" one lol. Besides, I don’t believe I posted any photos of oranguatans?

Thanks! We stayed in a hotel every other week in the city (where I worked at the University Vet Clinic), and on the alternating weeks stayed in a room provided by the wildlife center. They were pretty decent. The hotel was very nice, breakfast included, etc. and the rooms were...rooms, lol. A cement room with a bunk bed, an outlet, and a small window. Did the trick, except the dang vervet monkeys kept breaking in and stealing our food lol.

I’ll have to post some photos from the vet clinic. No one vaccinates their dogs there so my job was basically to sit with Parvo puppies while they died. It wasn’t exactly uplifting, but hopefully I made their lives a little bit more comfortable giving fluids, pain meds, etc. I did get to bottle feed a bunch of puppies though. Their mom was sick (un vaccinated).

Anyway, I’ll have to get those photos. Thanks!

Lol. Silly monkeys =P What happened to the puppies is sad though. Was there anywhere at all there that did vaccinations? Or just not locally?

The vet I was volunteering with provided fairly low cost vaccinations at the University in the middle of town. People just aren’t educated enough about the diseases and/or don’t have the money to pay for vaccinations. Since none of the animals are fixed, dogs just roam the streets spreading disease and having puppies : (

Oh, I see. Well anyway, thanks for posting the pictures. Its sad how lack of education can cause such problems. The same ignorance is often displayed in the U.S. as well, with owners not spaying/neutering or vaccinating their pets, although research before the animal is brought home can make a huge difference.
