What animal can I get in CA

I want some thing cute that is exotic, but I don’t know which one to get and it has to be legal in CA. If any one can just names some cute exotic animals for me it would be very helpful! Thanks!

Why can’t you just get a rat or a rabbit?

Why does it have to be an exotic? If you are getting this animal just to have something different and exotic, that’s not a a good reason. I agree with the rat or rabbit idea.

Get a pair of rats! They are legal in CA and make great pets. You need to choose an animal that fits your lifestyle, not one that has a nice label or looks pretty and cute. Just because it’s an exotic doesn’t mean it’s something you’re going to end up wanting.

There aren’t many exotics you can get in cali. Maybe a snake, most reptiles are OK, birds too...a Toucan or a Mynah (very messy though) but California is very strict on Mammals. Why are you looking for an exotic specifically? How about looking into some rescues, I know many shelters there have things other then cats and dogs. I think rats are a GREAT idea. They are friendly, smart and easy to care for. Even most apartments allow small caged pets.

I don’t think anyone is going to help you find an animal just for a status symbol or to show off, at least I hope not.

yeah seriously, you really shouldnt get one just to show off. i mean if you want attention get a reptile. i have a bearded dragon and always have people coming over to see it. Also, if you are not going to even care for it properly, dont bother even getting one. i don’t want to be rude, i just want whats best for the animals.

I don’t think she means show off, I think she means SHOW, like a horse show or dog show etc. Like "best of breed stuff" Obviously if it’s illegal in California there won’t be anywhere you can show it. I haven’t really heard of ANY exotic animal "show" I know that at the Delmar Fair they show goats, chickens, cats, pigeons, etc. There is the fancy rat and mouse association that holds shows. I worked in the bird industry years ago out there and have never heard of shows for any type of parrot same goes for any reptiles but I could be wrong. As far as shows go, you’re better off with some type of farm animal, horse cat or dog. You may just want to find an animal you like and can afford to care for, then join an association for it. Many associations have days where you can bring your animals and show them off to other people who have the same type of animal. You get to swap ideas and learn more about the animal.
Again, as far as exotic, most everything is illegal there. Ferrets, sugar gliders, skunks, some turtles etc. If you are just looking for an animal to draw attention. (Which is a poor excuse to own an animal!!) Snakes are GREAT. So are bearded dragons. I get tons of attention when I take my reptiles for a "walk" but I do it because I want to teach people about them and hope to raise awareness on care and handling of that animal. Many people are afraid of snakes but when they meet my VERY colorful corn snake Q they are drawn to touch him and learn about him. I even had a little old lady tell me she had a horrible phobia of snakes and Q was the first one she’d ever touched. It was awesome but I seem to have gotten off the subject, sorry.
