I am starting to develop an interest in llamas. I did some research on them and they said they make good pets. I would love to talk to someone who handles llamas regularly. If anyone has a llama or knows anything about care that I may have missed I would very much appreciate it if you could share information with me. Thank you!

I really do not know much about them but I did use to feed one every week end . I am sure if you google it there are many breeders you could talk to.

I don’t have a lot of experience with llamas but do have some experience with alpacas (a smaller version of the same animal, basically, their skeletons are virtually identical as is that of a camel). They eat grass and hay and need a lot of space. They are pack animals, so you must have at least two. You can find them at shelters and rescue organizations for cheaper and they are usually vet checked and already gelded. I’ve found that the best "pets" are gelded (neutered) males, so start there and work your way up.

Of course you need a good shelter and fresh food/water, shears for their coat and nail scissors for clipping their toe nails. Care of their fur, nails, teeth, etc. is really the most complicated part if you don’t have experience with it, so I would suggest finding a class or something or just someone experienced with them (volunteer at a rescue) to get some experience doing these things before bringing the llamas home because you’ll save a lot of money being able to do it yourself and you don’t want to get them before you know how.

Where are you located? Perhaps I can help you find some good places to start.

I looked at the links by skullkeeper. The second one didn’t work but the first one did but it is pretty far from Akron Ohio. as in my parents dont even know where its at. Its great but if anyone could find one a little closer to Akron that would be great if not that’s OK.

Both links worked when I clicked on them. Try them again. If it doesn’t work google The National Llama Association .You might also contact your local 4-H groups .A lot of kids raise Llamas as a 4-H project .
