 Peacocks

Anyone have any suggestions for raising and caring for these lovely birds? My husband bought a pair who are kept with the chickens. The first night, the male flew away while my husband was trying to install a perch for them. The second night, she flew to the top of the coop but my husband got her down and persuaded her into the coop. She got on her perch and stayed there all night.

We heard him calling yesterday and think she was going to go find him. She had all day to do this since he was calling all day but she never responded to him. We also noticed him picking on her and figured she didn’t want him back. She has gotten used to the chickens and chases them into the coop if she gets spooked which is really cute.

Anyways, any suggestions will be very helpful. Thank You!

Hi ,I had a pair years ago , One thing I can tell you is it is very important to have a fecal checked done on a fresh stool sample from both of your birds . We had ours as hatchlings and had no experience with Peacock’s . They both grew to adult hood but suddenly our male died . We found out it was from worms . So be sure and have them checked at least once a year .They also make great watch dogs,LOL. Ours would walk on top of our house and carry on if a stranger came close . I would get a mate for your female . When our male died our female grieved over the loose . We ended up giving her to some friends that had 4 others . She was very happy with them .The male may come back .I hope so .

Thank you very much! My husband bought another male and she has not left his side. We had his wings clipped by the breeder and she has not flown up onto the coop anymore. She has been lying in the coop for 2 days with him behind her with his tail feathers (whatever he has of them since he is only a year and a half) fanned out. Don’t get me wrong, she is still eating and they do come out for a couple of hours in the evening. I’ll have my husband read your post since he is in charge of them. I just do the research and have him read the important stuff so they live a happy and long life.

As for original male, we heard him for 2 days and then no more. I keep thinking he may come back when he is old enough to mate. I know other people in our town have peacocks so maybe he’ll find them.

Thanks again! Any other tidbits you can offer are great!

Sounds like they are courting .He will be protective of her .The other male may have found him another female,LOL. If you don’t hear him he is probably gone .Our female would stand and look in the door glass at her reflection for hours crying . Then she would stand and sleep on top of my car . Talk about having a dirty car ! Try cleaning that kinda bird crap off,LOL. We never had to clip their wings since we had them from the time that they hatched . They thought I was their Mommy . I guess I was . A friend of mine had two white peacocks and two blue . Ours were blue . How old are they?

1 and a half years old. Yesterday he was chasing her around the pen. When he walked away from her she went back to him and he would chase her again. It was definitely playful because after a little while they both went into their coop to eat and drink together and then back out to play. My husband let them out in the yard and they disappeared into our wooded section with the chickens. I hope they all come back.

Leave the pen open so they can come back to eat . They should come back before dark. But ours would some times perch up on a low branch in the woods . We were surrounded with trees too. Man I miss my place so much ! It was a wonderful place to raise kids .

The pen is always left open except for nighttime when all are shut. I’ll mention to my husband about yours perching in case they don’t come back before dark.

Our first house didn’t have many trees on the property but across the street was a national park for the wild animals. We had plenty of black bears around but they never bothered us and deer. Now, we are on a wooded lot with a fox den across the street, a coyote that comes along every once in a very great while, and a group of deer. I miss the bears. Garbage day, a mother and her 2 cubs would walk down the street and swipe at the pails as she walk along. If it opened, they rummaged and ate and if not they kept on walking. I found it cute and funny

Oh, I see one peacock already in the pen. That must mean the other is there also. Makes me feel better.

That’s great . They will usually come back around dusk. You want to watch out for that coyote and fox. If they get into your pen the birds will be killed .

They were the first ones in. I haven’t seen the coyote or fox in a while but the birds aren’t let out unless we spend the day outside.

Again, thank you so much for all of your bits of wisdom!
