 Cavies, good indoor pets?

Hello, I have just started reading up on Patagonian Cavies, but I can’t find very many good care sheets/websites. Can they make good free roaming (in your house) pets? I read that you can potty train them but I also read that they have a chewing problem, is this true? I know there are a few cavy owners on here. Any help or advise is greatly appreciated.

I would never reccommend a cavy as a primarily indoor pet. Or any wild animal for that! Cavies have ever-growing teeth like rats and NEED to chew to wear them down. They also dig and can jump 5 feet into the air. I’ve been raising cavies for 8 years and never have I kept one in my house past 6 months of age. They just need more space than that. Plus the have claws that rip carpet, furnature and the males make better pets but are musky. If you have specific questions please leave me a message.

Oh, my gosh, TutThePlatedLizard! ROFLMAO!

And actually, Animalfreak123, guinea pigs can live outdoors, provided they have shelter and a secure fence enclosing them. Once again, do some damn research.

Lol. A guinea pig is certainly NOT a wild animal! However, I think they should be indoors as well, so that’s more a matter of opinion than research.

To get back to the topic on hand before animalfreak demonstrated ignorance, I wouldn’t keep a wild animal indoors. Make sure you have done a LOT of research and have a very suitable, secure, outdoor enclosure for them that gives them the space they need to live in as natural of a habitat as possible. If you want an indoor pet, get guinea pigs : )

my 4 guineas are kept outdoors all year round, but then again i am in the uk and we dont have severe weather, they are in an enclosed hutch/run,which is cat proof so no worries there. i personally dont agree with keeping cavies indoors but hey,its up to the idividual,i just feel they cant have the space they need inside. i would never allow them to free roam mainly due to their chewing nature, their teeth grow continuosly,so they chew a lot, when mine do come in they even try to graze the carpet! oh and guinea pigs do not dig, but they can jump, though the highest they can realistically jump is around 12inches.

he is talking about these

not regular guinea pigs

from every thing have read they are VERY destructive and make awful indoor pets due to the reasons listed above(chewing/digging)

so i would not recomend it unless you want your house ruined lol
