 Killing mice ect ect

Alrighty just read most of the huge post below about killing mice...well some say its gross and some methods are and in the uk its illegal to feed live?....yet they eat live food in the wild?!?dumb if you ask me. anyway I don’t feed live and wouldnt because well I wouldnt want it to bite my snake.... but was wondering here...... all the methods listed are for adult mice or rats....rats are illegal here lol provinace is free of rats!) I was wodnering how one puts pinkies and fuzzies to sleep easily? I know you all say dry ice but honestly I don’t know if thats legal here either since I’ve never heard of it ever being sold round here..... I don’t know or maybe one just feeds pinkies live since they are small helpless and cant bite? thou I sitll have a thing for feeding live rodents to snakes....kindof gross to watch sad to have to do...even thou the ones you buy were live at one time.... any insight on this? And for people who have said its a mouse or its only a rat well some peopl enjoy ehse animals as wpets I had tons of mice 6 years ago uised to keep and breed them for fun they are interesting little pets and haev never been bitten by a mouse but always by hamsters! same as some will say its only a snake kill it or something like that it hurts because we as snake owners like our snakes just as much as they like there mice and rats or gerbils and guineapigs or rabbits.

If it’s illegal to feed live, then do not train your snake to expect live. If you do, then it become a much harder animal to take care of, and if anything happens to you the snake will be screwed. Unless you know for a fact that nothing unpleasant can possibly happen to you until the snake dies of old age in 15 years or so then you need to train it to survive in captivity, because that is the environment that it actually has to live in.

So they sell live, not frozen, but it’s illegal to feed live? That’s just weird. You can’t get frozen anywhere?

Well, with pinkies and fuzzies, pretty much anything will kill them. You can easily crack their skull just by pinching it between thumb and forefinger, actually. Or if you don’t want to look at them, put them in a plastic grocery bag and swing it against a wall or table. Same bag trick works instantly for larger mice too, but it takes less force with pinkies and fuzzies. With them, don’t go crazy with your swing or they’ll actually squash. Even with far les force than that, they’re still dead on impact. No matter how they hit, the shock to their system takes them out before they can finish saying "Hey, this bag is kind of interesting..." Although if they actually start to say that, don’t kill them. I think mice that can talk are worth money.

Oh, OK. Well, the thing is, the only wa to kill an animal is to destroy the brain. Some people think it’s better if they choke or shiver until the brain dies, because those people are squeamish about seeing blood, but from a standpoint of minimizing the animal’s suffering, I’d rather just go straight to the brain and be done with it.

Altough, that said, I’m kind of a hppocrite, because these days I buy frozen rodents that have been gassed. That’s because carbin dioxide is still REASONABLY quick, certainly no worse than if the snake did it, and I figure going from their original home to the gas chamber is easier onthem than first going to the delivery box, then to the overcroded pet shop cage, then to the box I take them home in... getting them already dead, even if their actual death is a little bit worse, still saves them a lot of psychological stress.

There are too many pet shops that just keep one big tak, with one water bottle, with hundreds of mice of diferent sizes all crammed in ther together. Used to make me sick doing business with them when I "had" to. (Made my snake sick, too; I had a pine snake that wouldn’t take frozen until he was eight years old and at one point he had three kinds of worms simultaneously because of the conditions the local feeder mice were kept in.)

A pin might be too thin though, depending on where it hits. Not every single tiny part of the brain is a kill spot. In fact, most aren’t. That’s why doctors can cut into your head with a scalpel and remove a brain tumor, but they can’t just whack it out with a sledge hammer.

I have nothing against cervical dislocation at all if you know how to do it. It’s just as quick as bashing if done right. However, I’ve seen tails come off when it was done wrong, leaving a maimed and still conscious rodent. So I stick with something that require less finesse to get the same quick, brutal result.
The only way putting a mouse in a bag and swinging it against a wall isn’t going to be fatal is if the person halfasses the swing. With cervical dislocation there’s error risk from both halfassing the tail pull and from improper angling. So I’ve got no problem at all with it being done right, but it’s best learned in person. Swinging the mouse like a blackjack doesn’t have any subtle nuances, except for making sure you don’t actually smash it if it’s a pinkie or fuzzy.
