 Food for rats

i am going to start breeding rats for my multiple snakes. i was wondering what would be a good, cheap feed for them. there are a lot of horse feed stores in town. i was wondering if there is a good type or brand of horse feed(or maybe a couple i should mix together) that i could give to them since i can buy a 50lb bag for 10-20 dollars. thanks for any imput.

I mix up my own rat food. I use a dog food WITHOUT red dye (it’s harmful to your snakes), cat food, dry tri-colored pasta, & cheerios. I supplement with veggies and leftovers from dinner - bones, etc.

I feed a dry mix much as mentioned above. Got the basics of this from this link though I change it up weekly with whatever’s in my own dry stock pantry and what’s on sale at the store. My rats also get "wet" kitchen scraps about twice per week.

dry dog and cat food yes is a cheap meal for rodents, but is doesn’t give them the proper nutrition. If you really love your snakes you want to feed them healthy rodents with the best diet .If you have a purina farm feed store close they can order rodent food for you (they won’t have it in stock). There is two seperate foods for mice and rats with different nutritional values.I think the purina brand is called mazuri.I looked into breeding rodents and had gathered alot of info.

That premade diet might do for mice, it’s not appropriate for what a rat requires.

No. Corn is a cheap filler food. That’s why so many rodent food manufacturer’s fill their dry mixes with it. It not only doesn’t do much good for your feeder rodents, if it has grown a mould, it’s deadly for them. If you are breeding for top quality feeders for your snakes, feeding the feeders good food should be a priority and that doesn’t come cheap.

You actually want low protein - less than 18% protein preferably. I feed the mix that Frankykeno feeds - a mix of Mazuri lab block for rats, low protein high quality dog food (Nutra Senior is what I like), dry tri-color pasta, dry old fashioned oatmeal, sugar free cereals, usually Kashi brand for mine and I also buy a bird feed that’s mixed nuts, berries and sunflower seeds (no corn).

They also get some left-overs from dinner about 2 times a week, cooked veggies, any type of bone for their teeth, a small amount of meat. They also like cottage cheese, yogurt that’s just expired, hard boiled eggs (with the shell on - they eat the shell as well).

You are what you eat - so if I want my snakes to have the very best food possible, I want my feeders to be well fed as well. My rats eat well, are not overweight, and consistently have litters of 15 babies or more. Fifteen is a small litter for me.

I don’t see why it whould be bad for them to eat sweet feed...They make a 18% sweet feed,it has oats and corn in it..
