 Breeder roaches

I am new to breeding roaches, I keep orange heads and cuban burrowing roaches, not much has happened yet, a few nymphs from the cubans so far. I was wondering if they can be kept without a substrate to ease cleaning, but dont want to compromise on breeding numbers. any info?

I find its always better to have a good few inches of peat....
And cleaning really isn’t that hard when you have a substrate.
I only clean my roach tubs once a year....
Numbers are great and have never had problems with my roaches dieing.....

 Breeder roaches

I try to keep most of the adults in one bin, with moist sphagnum, and most of the nymphs in another bin, with no substrate at all. The nymphs eat and poop so profusely that their bin stinks after about 5 days, so I move them all into a clean bin and then wash the old one for next time. In the tub with no substrate, what I do is keep it slightly tilted, with the heat under the downhill side. Moisture runs downhill, then evaporates again, then recondenses again under the lid. The only cage furniture I bother with for those guys is a food dish and some egg cartons, positioned on edge so I can easily sift through each for new adults to move into the breeder bin. The only thing the adults have that the babies don’t is substrate, horizontally arranged egg cartons for better privacy, and fewer cleanings because I don’t want to lose egggs.
