Crickets and isopods. Mealies aren’t so hard either.

I think I’ll try crickets. I’ve heard that you need to buy at least two hundred crickets (one size under adult) to start a colony but I’ve also heard you can just buy a couple dozen large crickets from the pet store. Would the second way work? Have you ever breed any isopods? If you have which one(s)?

Isopods are slow breeders, you need a large colony, but they are well worth it for feeding any hatchlings or small critters like dart frogs. Just go out and collect as many as you can. Put them in a tub with some wood, toss any food you’d feed crix or roaches. They also like rotting stuff. They need to be kept moist, they are a crustacean and breathe through gills actually. Rolly pollies and sow bugs both would be fine, there are over 10,000 different isopods and I’ve never bothered to learn the differences.

Two dozen adult crickets would be a fine way to start a colony off. Personally, I never colonized crickets, but I know many people who do. I preferred roach colonies because they have a higher nutritional value and no *$#$ing noise.
