 Not interested in crix

hey everyone. well i recently got another lizard to keep my other one company. its another female, and i know its young based on its size (maybe like 4.5" head to tail). the two get along just fine together, but the problem comes when its time to feed.

my older fence lizard has no problem eating her fill of crix, but the little one seems completely disinterested in them. i try to feed her the smallest crickets i have, even going so far as pulling off their back legs so they cant jump away (much easier said than done). but so far the only thing she’ll eat are small mealworms. i know they should not be a staple foodsource due to the chitin in their shell.

is this normal for baby lizards? what else can i try to offer her? what about getting some small waxworms? although i hear they high in fat.

does that mean your old lizard was acting lonely or you wanted another one?
what size tank do you have? i think mines 10 gal. and i want to house 2 but it doesnt look big enough for two 6 in fencys. only 1 MORE question... doesnt the older lizard pick on the little one?

im not sure how many gallons it is, but it was a pretty big tank and it cost $50 so it looks to have plenty of room for them.
no i haven’t seen the big lizard pick on the little one, in fact they seem to get along just fine. (they both female).
when i put crix in the cage, the big one gets all happy and eats whatever comes in front of her then goes running around the cage looking for more. the little one just sits theres and watches..... the only thing it will ever run up to check out is mealworms.

well another update.....
i once again tried to feed her a small cricket tonight (with the back legs pulled off so it cant get away easy) but she was complete disinterested.... however she grabbed the mealworm i was holding right out of my fingers (shows she not too afraid of me).

i guess tomorrow ill go to petsmart and get some waxworms or fruitflies and see if they are any different.

as far as everyone knows, waxworms and fruitflies are safe for them to eat all the time, unlike mealworms, right?

if that lizard has a bluebelly then its a male not a female. plus its too light of color to be a female

i dont see a reason why your lizard wouldnt eat! but if it does perfer mealworms i suggest before you feed himpinch the head of the worms the reason because when it eatas the worms the worms actually eat him on the inside so be sure to pinch the heads so that doesnt happen!!!

i heard that was just a rumor. even the wikipedia article on mealworms mentions that is not true.
and think about it, they get in the stomach and the acid there would start dissolving it right away.

anyway, another update, i keep all my crix in a large crittercage, and i put the little one into that cage-- dozens of small crix everywhere, and nothing.... :(
i guess ill have to feed her something else

well yea i dont want to admit this but i didnt learn everything from this site!i really went to a pet store and asked a person all about my lizard and i came back home did what i need to do tried everything for a week then went back and told her what i learned... if something was wrong she told me how i could fix it!!
id try that.....shes the one who told me about the mealworms....better safe than sorry!!! besides your took off legs of crix. u should have no problem squeezing heads!!!
i dont want to tell you wrong but i think you have a male.... the yellow located on the underarm and blue patches on chin. i’m not sure if you can tell right away if its male or female but mine is deffintaly male and about the same size as yours!!’
good luck

well normally ill chase the big one into her cave where she just chills for awhile, and then i try to convince the little one to eat a cricket. i only put one in at a time. but it’ll never eat it. eventually the cricket makes the mistake of walking in front of the big one and thats it for it.

as i mentioned, i had put the little onto into the critterkeeper i have all the crickets in, only for a minute or two... but it wasnt interested in any of them. petsmart was closed today, im going there tomorrow for waxworms or fruit flies.

and you know, i think the little one is a male afterall. i saw one page that agreed with what you said about the males having yellow under the legs.

i honestly think it’s a male... bbut sometimes im afriad to say anything because other people will argue...and some times it can get nasty but i had to this time. do you still have any questions?

i think when you go to get friut flies bring your lizard and maybe ask an attendant to help you and maybe you can find out why your lizard isnt interested in crix!

Hope you learned sumin sumin from me

well yeah i think you may be right.... like i said, i really didnt notice the yellow behind his legs until i took the upside down pic.

but i got great news! he finally ate a cricket today! maybe he watched the other one eat them enough times to learn, or maybe he was just really hungry today.
