 **PLEASE HELP**

I HAVE A WESTERN FENCE LIZZARD. HE WAS HEALTHY, ACTIVE, AND EATING WELL UNTIL ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO. HE STOPPED EATING. NOT SURE IF HE IS DRINKING WATER. HIS EYES SEEM VERY SUNK IN AND GREY. HE BURRIES HIMSELF IN THE SAND ALOT. HE MOVES SLOWLY AND STAYS IN ONE AREA FOR LONG PERIODS AT A TIME. IS HE HYBERNATING? IF SO, WHAT DO WE DO?

Well, he deffinitely shouldn’t be starting his hibernating at this time of the year. But the eating thing could be because of poor heating. The temp in your western’s cage should be between 80 -90 durring the day and roughly 70-75 at night. They need heat to properly digest their food.

Also, make sure he has his lamp or heat pad/rock on one side of the tank, and his water and another open area on the other. They need a place to go to get out of the heat and cool down.

The burrying itself thing is normal, they love to do that. You should also make sure he has enough caves/other places to hide and his cage is in a secure place away from daily traffic and out of reach of other animals. Right now, you shouldn’t hold him or give him any form of attention for too long. Try not to move his cage around alot as all of these things can cause stress which can cause poor eating habbits and even death. If you caught him wild, and it was within the last month or so, you need to let him go the same place, or near where you caught him.

Captivity causes extreme stress in wild bbs and some of them just can’t take it. You might want to look for mites (small black or bright orange/red bugs) as these are a serious threat. I wouldn’t put live plants in the tank since his immune system is weak right now, and make sure you quarantine all rocks/wood that you get him for atleast five days before you put it into his tank. This will eliminate all parasites or other harmful bacteria on the objects. Do not wash them with household cleaners. A 5% bleach solution would be okay, but make sure you wash everything thoroughly with HOT HOT HOT water. Also, make sure it all drys completely before you give it to him.

Try not to move stuff in his cage too much. If you’re going to put stuff in the tank, do it all at once, and as quickly and quietly as possible. Try to work around him.
